For more than 20 years he served in the ATF and often found himself in the center of the action. From Waco to 9/11, Agent DiBetta served his country with honor and distinction. "I'm thankful for all the experiences I had throughout my career", said DiBetta. Whether it was a great day or a tough day, every one of them reminded me to appreciate everything in my life. Initially intended to focus solely on his experiences related to the ATF's activities in Waco, Plain Old Agent shares DiBetta's perspectives into the operation. His story has not yet been published anywhere else, and it is shared now in an effort to ensure that the officers who sacrificed their lives that day are never forgotten. As he looked back on his career, DiBetta realized that all of his experiences, good and bad, provide insight into the complex and sometimes infuriating life of a federal agent. "This book is a diverse collection of stories that, when pieced together, provide an entertaining look into the life of a street agent", said DiBetta. Some of my experiences will make you laugh, and sometimes you'll likely scratch your head and wonder why. Among his many tales, DiBetta takes you up the rickety fire escapes of a Manhattan apartment building, into the control room following the bombing at the Atlanta Olympic Games, and along for a plane ride while serving as an air marshal during those uncertain days following the 9/11 attacks. But his most important contributions are his recollections from Waco. DiBetta was actively involved in the case from the early planning, to the gunfight on the Davidian compound, and the confusing days that followed. From start to finish, his story adds much to our collective understanding of that misguided operation. Four ATF agents lost their lives while serving the warrant in Waco. It was the deadliest day in ATF history.

About the Author
Dave DiBetta's government career began in the early 80s after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY Fredonia. Dave enrolled in the U.S. Army and served in the military police where he represented First Army at the All-Army Pistol Championship. Following his military service, he worked for the IRS in the underwriter's program until he received a full-time position as a Customs Inspector at JFK International Airport in New York. While at Customs, Dave applied for a position with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and for the next 22 ½ years he served as an ATF Special Agent. At the conclusion of his ATF career in 2009, Delaware U.S. Senator Kaufman read Dave's biography on the Senate floor. Among his many achievements, Dave revitalized the local chapter for the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association in Delaware. He became its chapter president before later serving as Agency President, representing all ATF agents nationwide.

Preventing Future Wacos

With the 23rd anniversary of Waco occurring at the end of February, and with the recent news about the Oregon standoff led by Ammon Bundy, this book could not have been more timely. What Fasnacht and DiBetta have written is a a compelling read that reminds everyone there is a thin gray line between what we perceive as Constitutional rights and how to disregard the letter of the law. Everyone remembers David Karesh, who was Messiah-like to his Waco followers. Because of that, he had convinced the people in his compound that Federal and State laws are incidental or even obsolete....and that the only law was their individual right to do whatever they thought was their privilege. We all know that doesn't usually work out too well. Reading Plain Old Agent stirred the memories of Waco and how the buck really didn't stop. This could happen again today, but thankfully we have heroes and agents like DiBetta who have the know-how and experience to help prevent another Waco. This book is a must-read for people interested in law and history, and how those two paths sometimes violently converge.

including great insights into the WACO fiasco

A very entertaining book. It moves along fast and you get to hear real stories about the ATF from someone who was there, including great insights into the WACO fiasco. We finally get a behind the scenes look at WACO and the preparations and the mistakes that were made that lead to the deadly confrontation with the Branch Davidians. The author had a very interesting and highly decorated career, too bad he had to fight the battle on two fronts, not just against the people he was tasked to take down but also having to fight incompetence within the ATF. If you have any interest in learning more about government agencies and how they operate you should read this book. If you are interested in going to work for a government agency you should read this book.

A great walk down memory lane

A great walk down memory lane. Dave recounts many of the strange and funny things that happened to him during his career with ATF. These kind of things actually happen in law enforcement! As they say, "you can't make this stuff up". I witnessed many of these events in person and like Dave I'm amazed at the many incompetent and vindictive managers we had leading the charge at ATF (fortunately they weren't all that way).
This is a fun read that will leave you shaking your head and asking yourself, "did that really happen?". IT DID!!!
