Nobody Cares and What I Did About It -A True Insight of the Chicago's Mafia (Outfit)

For someone who has lived in Chicago all his life, (68 Yrs) I found this book fascinating. I have read and heard stories about the Chicago's "Outfit" for years. Wemette goes in great detail on some of Chicago's most notorious Outfit Members. As an American with all Italian heritage, I resent how many authors and movie producers glorify the gangsters as some type of hero. He does not sugar coat and/or glorify these gangsters. They are portrayed for what they are, KILLERS! This book gives insight as to the Mob, their operation, and the life of a mobster. The book also gives insight on how life is like when a person becomes a government witness and how they are treated. It is very apparent that Wimette placed his life in jeopardy when he agreed to wear a wire to record conversations with a cold blooded killer. I could not believe how several FBI agents treated him. For a person, who puts his life on the line, should have be treated better.

What I really liked about the book, is the writing style of the author. It is a VERY EASY READ. The story's informational flow is effortless. I highly recommend this book. After reading this book, I believe that there might be another.

For 17 years Red Wemette lived a double life. Wemette ran an adult bookstore in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood and he had to pay the Chicago mob a street tax to stay in business. But he successfully recorded the extortion demands on videotape. And those tapes led to the conviction of the Chicago Outfit's top hitman.

One of the best Outfit books to come out in the last ten years.

This book is one of the only books written about the Chicago Outfit that gives you the unique insight of a cooperating witness who not only worked with the Feds but worked for them without the threat of prison like most cooperating witnesses do. 99% of the people who cooperate and testify against mobsters usually get into some sort of trouble and in order to keep themselves out of prison they will work with the Feds to do whatever it takes to get out of future prison sentence. William "Red" Wemette was never in trouble or being investigated by the Feds when he decided to cooperate. "Red" Wemette is one of those people who saw what the kind of guys these Outfit members were. Just thugs and bullies and "Red" decided to do something about it. To make things even more frightening is the fact that "Red's" apartment was set-up with surveillance camera's and audio listening devices. Men like Frank "The German" Schweihs who was such a feared Outfit killer that one time Michael Spilotro told his daughter "If you see this man around our house (he showed her his photo) just call the police". Schweihs was rumored to be involved in a great amount of Outfit sanctioned murders. "Red" Wemette knew them all. Everyone from Joey Lombardo, Tony Spilotro, Anthony "Jeeps" Daddino, Jimmy "The Bomber" Catuara, Louie Eboli, Ken Eto and the list goes on. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the Outfit and to read about a man who for over 18 years put his life on the line with some of the most dangerous men in the Outfit. In even better news I was told today that "Red" Wemette is already working on his second book.

A new reality for hard-working and loyal employees--a mid-life pink slip!

Author Mira Tasich has touched upon a new reality for the working poor upward to include even the working wealthy. Her advice is based on her very own reality wake-up call having been summarily discharged after long years of dedicated employment--and sent on her way with the unanswered questions of "Why? Why me?" The book is inspiring as she walks through her proven recipe for picking oneself up and starting all over again--with the prospect of a delightfully rewarding future. How she was able to effectively restructure her own definition of "success," within the reality which she unwittingly found herself in, is nothing less than remarkable. I was unable to put the book down once I realized just how "on point" her thesis is and how, by following her examples discussed in the book in detail, I too would be able to find peace, success and life-time satisfaction by following the path she outlines which results in a far simpler and satisfying life--even finding myself in the middle of one of life's surprising temperamental storms. We have eight children (age range from 24 to 42) and each one is receiving a copy of Mira Tasich's Good Bye Job, Hello Life. This is a gift that will be read and applied over and over again ... to the reader's benefit. Highly recommended.

A Fantastic Read!!!

Mira Tasich does a great job of painting a beautiful picture of her colorful life.
As a working mother, consumed by succeeding in corporate America, she describes the many challenges, failures, and successes of her own life. Her humor is refreshing and she will leave you with inspiration, not only to climb mountains, but also to stop and smell the roses. She will make you feel that whatever regrets you have in your own life, it's alright because it is only through these difficulties and challenges that you will grow and reach a higher level, so you can bring more joy into your own life and into the lives of others. It is during her darkest times that Mira discovered her deepest passions and learned to receive joy from the simplest things in life.

This was a very entertaining and motivating book. I could relate to so many of Mira's stories about corporate America and the need to explore your passions in life. I think everyone could find some inspiring message that pertains to their lives by reading this book. Mira was able to put into words what many of us feel on a day to day basis. Great book!!!

Para este tiempo, Dios lo ha puesto como un ejemplo a seguir para esta generación, y a través del ministerio que dirige, Mission Redemption, ha logrado impactar a miles de personas. Actualmente Christopher se congrega junto a su esposa y su familia en la Iglesia Cristiana Discípulos de Cristo en el Barrio Borinquen de Caguas donde pastorea el reverendo Eliezer Ronda.

I AM MY BROTHER'S KEEPER!

My Brother’s Keeper was an absolutely astounding book. It was a very easy an encouraging book to read. I enjoyed every bit of it. It was riveting and moving and inspires those who love our boys and men to get up and want to do help build strong boys so that we don’t have to repair broken men. I felt as if Dr. Connor was speaking directly to me. It truly displays Dr. Connor’s passion to help our youth. Throughout the book you were reminded that you are you’re Brother’s Keeper and with this repetition you begin to truly believe it! This books shows Dr. Connor’s depth understanding of the perils that boys face in the Black/Hispanic community as well as his passion for change. I encourage EVERYONE to read this book because we all are MY BROTHER’S KEEPER!

This book is just what the writing doctor ordered for aspiring writers who want to break into the business of all things written. I just finished this book, and being an aspiring author, I am always searching for great reference guides on the subject of writing. Many times I see (or am told about) people who are in search of writers for their business but I never jumped at the opportunities told to me because I had no idea how to go about doing it. I have a successful business, but the writing world is a totally different animal; when I received an email offering this book for free I immediately downloaded it and now feel more confident and capable to reach out to those future writing jobs I see and hear about. I read this succinct little book in less than an hour, and am so glad I did. Ian packs in a great deal of guidance, learned first hand from navigating the early stages of what promises to be his successful freelance career. About the Author
Michael Hogan is the author of twenty-four books, one of which, Irish Soldiers of Mexico, has been the subject of a best-selling documentary as well as an MGM feature film. He has worked as a university professor both in the U.S. and Mexico, a high school teacher and humanities chair at international schools, and as the Latin American consultant to the College Board. He is currently Teacher Emeritus at the American School Foundation of Guadalajara where he has taught since 1990.

If spiritual enlightenment can be described as having a genuine interest in the well-being of others and adding value to their existence, then this collection of speeches by Dr Michael Hogan proves he has not only attained enlightenment, but has the ability to transmit the accumulated wisdom of the ages in a manner that is entertaining and easily understood. He uses history and storytelling to illustrate timeless truths and a philosophy for living that is spiritual in nature but at the same time intensely practical. The principles he talks about remind me of a modern day Marcus Aurelias with the added benefit of instruction on how to apply said principles in today’s world. If you are looking for inspirational stories, spirituality, aphorisms, tools for bettering yourself or just a collection of good ideas for living, the stories contained in these speeches serve as the perfect tool. Simple truths and timeless wisdom illustrated in an entertaining, accessible and educational fashion. I only wish there was an audio version.

How to inspire and challenge listeners to achieve greater heights in 5 (well-prepared) minutes.

I was initially attracted to this book because I'm familiar with Michael Hogan's work ("The Irish Soldiers of Mexico".) This one is a collection of
5-minute speeches to introduce students being inducted into the National Honor Society. It seems that the book might be of interest to a very narrow interest group, but that is not the case at all.
These short and pithy intros interested me for 2 reasons: In business and as part of my membership in Toastmasters International, I have been called upon to introduce people in various situations. Sometimes I winged it and sometimes I carefully scripted it, but the main purpose was always to get the names in front of the audience. More recently I have been responsible for teaching students how to write and deliver a good speech. It never occurred to me to approach the introductory phase in the way Michael Hogan has.
Success stories, philosophy, positive psychology, and literary references all play a part in the construction of these perfect little speeches, intended to inspire listeners and imbue the honorees with a sense of social responsibility. This is a skill worth learning. My recommendation: Buy this book.

Loved it!

Loved it!! An absolute must read if you are a teacher or work in a school. Many wonderful ideas on how to positively motivate young adults into growing up to be more than just good students but also good citizens. Michael Hogan is an excellent poet plus a wonderful teacher who has been positively influencing kids every day for over 20 years. Thank you Dr. Hogan for being there class after class believing in every one of us and making us see the world and life differently through literature.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author has cites references to back up what is written. It is interesting to see some of the myths debunked away facts written as a narrative rather than speculation. There are some editing issues that irritated me, but didn't detract from the meat of the book.

Gustav Palm kept his secret for more than forty years. He'd been a young man when Hitler invaded his native Norway. After being forced to guard a Nazi prison camp, however, Gustav took his only option for escape: he volunteered for the Waffen-SS to fight at the front.

Agnes Erdös grew up in privilege and prosperity as a child in Hungary. She and her parents were practicing Roman Catholics, but they were ethnic Jews, and after the Nazis invaded her country, Agnes and her parents were sent to the death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

About the Author
Like his brother and three sisters, O. Håkan Palm, eldest son of Gustav and Agnes Erdös Palm, has been shaped by his parents wartime experiences. A successful management consultant in Stockholm, Sweden, Håkan has served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a bishop, as a member of two stake presidencies, and seven times as a counselor in the Sweden Stockholm Mission. He and his wife, Barbro, are the parents of seven children.

An Amazing and Emotional Book

What an amazing account of two people enduring and surviving one of the most heinous times in history. I am always drawn to books like this. They do more than tell a story- they remind me to be grateful, they educate me and they inspire me to be better.

Gustav and Agnes lived through two different sides of WWII. Both innocents in a tragic and awful time, forced into things that are unbelievable to some degree. It's hard to wrap my mind around the atrocities that they both lived through. So, so awful. So much heartache and loss. Their stories will touch your heart. They surely touched mine.

Most of the book is told from the alternating views of Gustav and Agnes. We follow each through life before, during and after the war. Obviously, most of the book is set during the war. The last chapter or so of the book does talk about their conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints, but it isn't preachy or anything. It simply tells how they came to know of the church and what they did after joining.

I really liked the pictures and the historical notes throughout the book. Pictures always make stories like this more personal.

I feel like this book is such a treasure. What an amazing account of life- of sacrificing and enduring and living to tell about it. Perhaps what is most amazing to me is how these two individuals conducted themselves during and after these atrocities. They were never bitter or angry. They never held on to the unfair, brutal lot that was heaped upon them. Instead they conducted themselves with honor and integrity. They helped others when they could. They kept their wits about them and they continued on. What an amazing legacy to leave their family. I'm so grateful to the author for sharing this amazing account with me.

A Triumphant Story of Holocaust Survival

I have not read a holocaust book since reading The Diary of Ann Frank in high school. It is such a horrible time in history and the outcome for thousands of innocent people is dreadful and caused me sleepless nights. I was so horrified to discover what happens to dear Ann Frank that I have not been able to read another story like it since. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

When I was given the opportunity to read this book I was struck immediately by the fact that this book will show case survivors of Hitler's regime. I gave it a chance and I'm so glad I did! This story focuses on 2 individuals, Gustav and Agnes.

Gustav lived in Norway when Hitlers army invaded. At the time, like so many others, he was "offered" an opportunity to join the Norwegian Battalion. He wasn't particularly interested but after much pressure they convinced him that he owed allegiance to the socialist party and that he could be a "police officer." Thinking "traffic police" Gustav knew that this opportunity would be better than farming so he took it. Poor Gustav! He was manipulated and found himself a guard at a Nazi prison camp. He was trapped. His heart broke for the "political prisoners" which he realized later were actually Jews and he remarks that as guards they were literally "prisoners guarding prisoners." It's eye-opening to realize that so many members of Hitlers army were unwilling and ashamed to do his bidding - but they really had no choice.

Agnes was a young lady living in Hungary when Hitler invaded. Her family, while of Jewish decent, had converted to Catholicism many years before. It didn't matter, those of Jewish faith or those of Jewish decent were forced into the ghetto anyway. Eventually, with her mother and father, she was loaded into a cramped boxcar and taken to Auschwitz. Through a series of life-saving events Agnes made it into barracks with other healthy women who would be given the opportunity to work. She never saw her parents again.

As you read this story you can see, amazingly, God's hand working through the tragedy as Agnes and Gustav eventually survive the war and find each other, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and happiness!

Written by their son O. Hakan Palm, and told as journal entries from the perspective of Agnes and Gustav, this book will take you to Hitler's Reich and back again. It is amazing and tasteful! I will be holding onto this book to use while we study World War II in our homeschool. It is well written and perfect for High School age students.

Great Read

This is a great read. I stayed up reading late in the night because I couldn't put it down. Man's inhumanity to man always has amazed me but more amazing is the ability of man to overcome incredible evil and obstacles and build something positive from it and not let destroy your life. What a tale of courage and love. May no one ever again have to endure the cruelty and suffering that Gustav and Agnes experienced.
