~~ A blunt and honest look at life in Africa as a Catholic priest ~~

In this frank, sometimes amusing, memoir, travel with Michael Barrington to Nigeria during the time of civil war. Had Michael always been destined to be a priest? According to his grandmothers he had! 'Jas' Simpson, a priest and friend of the family had spent years in Africa and was a big influence in Michael's life. Michael caught the 'bug' and years later at the age of 26 and a newly ordained priest found himself in Lagos, Nigeria in the Makurdi diocese.

What happened on the 'mammy wagon'? Who did they play a snake trick on? Was all peaceful between the priests? Hah! Meet the swearing parrot named Joe. 'Walk' with Michael through his first bout of Malaria. What did "seeing Africa" really mean? As he moved around the different areas and went on many, many safaris you will 'see' how this priest was a part of the people/tribes. He didn't live in luxury whilst they lived in poverty. In many ways his life was very lonely as for many years he ministered on his own without the help of another priest. What did that feel like?

Is this a tell all? In some cases you might say "Yes". The author is not secret about the abuse to young boys and the frustration he felt when his warnings were not taken seriously by those higher up thereby allowing the abuse to carry on albeit somewhere else. When we meet Frank at the beginning of the book we feel his frustration and see the reality of having to deal with other priests sexually abusing boys in their care. PLEASE PLEASE note that this author was NOT an abuser.

Why, when he had built a successful mission from nothing and finally "arrived" did he feel lost and alone? Who became his confidante? How was this the beginning of being betrayed by his own brotherhood even though Michael was innocent?

This book grips the reader from the beginning not for its thriller-like excitement but due to being so interesting. It is well-written for the most part and fast paced. I would advise adding a gap/line or something similar between scene changes as it really throws the reader to be in one scene and then suddenly switch to another with no warning. You will find the language "blue" at times as the author recounts not only his only speech but that of the other priests. Of course drinking beer and smoking are part of the course. The epilogue brings you up to date but may, like me, leave you with one question: What happened to Terry? Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

This is a Must read.

Wow! What an amazing read. This is material for a screen play or TV series. I simply could put this down. If this were anything but an Indie published book, it would surely be on the best seller list!
Beautifully written in an engaging, entertaining style, the reader is carried along at a fast pace as Michael, a young missionary priest, arrives in Nigeria to begin his ministry. A civil has just begun and the difficulties and challenges that he is faced with, in addition to his culture shock both in his own religious order and with the various tribes he lives with are daunting and sometimes shocking. Lack of basic amenities, food, supplies, dental and medical care are all accepted as being simply a part of doing one’s job. We see the constant push and pull of a young man trained in a new model of serving others battling with more traditional approaches and experiencing serious conflict among his colleagues.
The book is written in a style where almost each chapter can stand alone although there are consistent themes knitting them all together: the excitement of helping people, the thrill of mission work, but deep loneliness and the questioning of himself, the priesthood and above all the brotherhood of religious life.
What really happened on the road to Otrukpo when he was held up to be shot by drunken soldiers, what was it like having to give blood in a half built hospital in a remote village to save a woman’s life, how did Michael feel when a Muslim friend offered him his youngest wife for the night if only he would stay with him and why did the burial of a young school girl he was mentoring make him question his celibacy? The honesty with which the author confronts these issues and shares his raw feelings with the reader make this a captivating, amusing and in some ways a sobering read. We are taken with him on a roller-coaster of emotions as people, places and things deeply affect him. His account of being close to death with malaria fever for the first time is told only as a historical fact since he was delirious for five days and it was his alcoholic pastor who nursed him and later told him of what had happened.
There must be another book to follow this one! The reader is left wanting more and asking many questions even though the epilogue briefly brings us into the present. As an avid reader of memoir and autobiography, I cannot recall any book in recent years that deals with these topics or has had such a gripping effect on me.

Compelling memoir of a missionary priest

"The Bishop Wears No Drawers" is a compelling memoir written by Michael Barrington, a former missionary priest in Nigeria. It details his adventures in this African country during the time of civil war in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Barrington writes vividly about his experiences among the people of Nigeria, about the difficulties of getting from one place to another, particularly during the rainy season when the dirt roads turn to mud, about the lack of available medical care for the many diseases rampant in the area, the heat and humidity, the primitive housing, and much more, all of which gives the reader the feeling that he or she is personally present with the author.

But it's far more than a book about the immediate area where Father Barrington labored. It's also a story about Barrington's colleagues in the mission field, some of whom are hard-working and well-meaning, but others who are lazy, corrupt, or full of jealousy. We encounter an alcoholic priest whose aim in life seems to be to avoid work at all cost so he can sit around all day, read, chain-smoke cigarettes, and waste his life. Then there's the priest who regularly takes up with native women, and who simply gets transferred by the bishop to a different location when his indiscretions become public; and, of course, the pedophile priests who likewise receive the "punishment" of transfer rather than discipline.

Barrington's memoir held my attention throughout. It's believable and fascinating, and hard to put down.

In a vast, open sea of books on how to give good presentations and run meetings, Matt Abrahams has it down. He's put all you need to know to get more comfortable in front of people into a small book that you'll refer to and recommend to friends as long as you don't lose it due to its compact size.

What makes it special is 1) he keeps his ego out of it and focuses on the subject, something many modern non-fiction authors can't bear to do; 2) it's a near-perfect mixture of broad, general advice on being a more prepared and relaxed speaker over one's life and career and very specific tactics to use the day of your important presentation; and, 3) it reads well. He also has a nice section for non-native speakers that he should turn into an entire book.

If you're looking for something special for that newly promoted manager in your life, a supplementary text for your Speech or Communications course (college or high school), or even a seasoned speaker, get this book. Now!

Before Michael was even one year old, he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer of the central nervous system – a tumour had taken over half of his tiny body. His only hope was taking part in a drug trial program – a program of which Michael was the only participant to survive the treatment. Although he survived, he was left with some permanent scars – only one lung, a damaged heart and a sensitive immune system. 

Michael Crossland sets an example for all of us. He's a man who has faced (and still faces) extreme challenges in life, but he never gives up. And despite his own obstacles, he always puts others before himself and gives so much to people in need.

This is one of the many words of wisdom and great quotes that you will read in this inspirational and moving book. This is one of those rare times where you will read something & it will completely motivate you and make you think about your choices and how blessed you are. It is not just an inspirational read about a great man, but an incredible insight into a mothers love for her son and how she would do anything. Keep tissues handy because you do Read it with tears in your eyes & once you start reading you won't be able to put it down. Highly recommended.

I downloaded Michaels book on my Ipad Kindle App. As soon as I started reading it I started to take screen shots of pages that were so inspirational that I knew I wanted to go back and re-read them. Before I knew it I had a screen shot of almost every page! The book ended far to soon for me. I wanted it to last a lot longer! This is by far my favorite book that I have read in a very long time. Jerry E. Hendon worked as an environmental, health, and safety engineer in the petrochemical industry for forty years. He had a son, Kevin, who lived an inspiring life before dying of cystic fibrosis at eighteen. Now retired, he and Jaye, his wife, live in The Woodlands, Texas.

Once I started reading Kevin's story, I couldn't put it down. Though I knew him personally, I did not know all the struggles he faced on a day to day basis. This is a story of love, courage, faith, and an incredible warrior.

Captivating Biopic of a Courageous Human Being Who Lost the War with Cystic Fibrosis, While Winning Every Battle He Fought

Jerry Hendon's story about the life of his son Kevin is captivating. Be warned: Once you have taken Hendon up on the invitation to be a co-participant in making meaning out of Kevin's life-story, you will find it difficult to separate yourself from the experience, until the final page has been turned. Kevin's story is well-written and compelling. While you will learn a great deal about cystic fibrosis, Kevin's chronic health condition that would ultimately take his life, all such information is incidental, offered only as it becomes needed to understand what is happening. First and foremost, this is a story that celebrates the human spirit and demonstrates how one can live life gratefully and with gusto, even while that life is being lived precariously. You will not be able to help experiencing your own humanity at a deep level, even as you celebrate and esteem Kevin's.

A Life So Short

I have never read a book that affected me on so many levels. I bought the book because a friend of ours had CF and had died at the age of 32. As I have discovered, there is no cure for CF. I wanted to read a first hand account of how CF impacts a family and how they deal with a terminal disease.

Mr. Hendon’s book, based on facts, is to understand the good and bad experiences of a gifted child, who just before he died, at the age of 18, tried to console his grieving aunt with these words, “There hasn’t been a single day of my life that I haven’t enjoyed full-out. So lighten up, auntie. Let’s sing. And so we sang until the sun came up”. That sums up for me the way Kevin lived his life. Kevin was always giving, he never ever wanted sympathy, and he always lived in the moment. The author said in the preface, ‘I believe that as you read his story, you will laugh, you will cry, and whatever your life’s circumstances are, you will be inspired to try to make the most of every day and live life to the fullest.” I feel blest that this book has crossed my path. Everyone has a “story to tell” and Mr. Hendon did a beautiful job honoring Kevin’s wish and the promise that he would tell Kevin’s story. The book, is one of those rare ones that you just can’t put down. Although we know the tragic and heartbreaking conclusion, we truly know that Kevin is now with his Lord and Savior. I just melted, with tears streaming down my face, when I read that carved into his marker, just as Kevin wanted, were two words ”On Vacation.” And so he is!

Victim Blaming of Child Sexual Abuse Survivors

The author retells to his reader his experience with child sexual abused. Molested by his Aunt, he goes on to speculate this about his experience:

"When a child is punished with physical abuse but rewarded or validated after sexual abuse, does the understanding of what is right and what is wrong become occluded?"

The author suggests that children of child sexual abuse no longer retain the ability to understand right from wrong. Although posed as a question, ultimately, it casts an atmosphere of fear and distrust of the innocent victims of sexual abuse by those they love and trust. And although this is the author's "thoughts and feelings", what is the overall impact on these children? The Author claims that he wishes to bring light to abuse, when really what he has done is further reinforced a stigma of fear of children who have been abused, effectively blaming these children for the future strife that they will endure, while at the same time, reinforcing a damaging stigma.

This book is an amazing chronical from an adopted child's perspective of being abused, but it's also a book about perserverance, hope and finding oneself. I couldn't put it down. Loved reading it, and highly recommend!

I read the book and it gave me a great impact on my life and my path to success. It seems like Dr. Xa Xiong has put his best effort and his trust in what he wants to pursue and follow his dream. His marriage also reflects how blessed he is with his wife and five children. I would recommend this book to anyone from other countries who came to the U.S. to study or to become a doctor and have a supportive family. Ms. Choua Yang also had an incredible role to motivate her husband and support her children by doing whatever she could do. Overall I learned how important it is to realize that it takes the whole life of effort and faith to achieve success and blessings. Thank you for writing this book. It will plant dreams and wishes in the hearts of people. Blessings,

Though he inspired generations of writers, after The Thin Man he never finished another book―a painful silence for his devoted fans―and his popular image has long been shaped by the remembrance of Hellman, who knew him after his literary reputation had been made.

Searched for the facts about Hammett's life

"The Lost Detective" is a biography of Dashiell Hammett. The first half of the book talked about Hammett's life before his writing career. The author searched for documents or first hand information about Hammett. However, apparently there is little known about this time except the stories that Hammett told about himself.

Hammett periodically worked for the Pinkerton's, but none of his case reports still remain and Pinkerton's strongly discouraged their employees from telling accurate stories about their work. Nathan Ward related stories that Hammett told about his detective work, compared them to known facts, and generally concluded that they were changed or embellished rather than accurate stories. But Ward describes how the Pinkerton detective methods and case report writing style influenced Hammett's detective fiction.

The second half of the book talked about how Hammett's poor health changed his life and how he got into writing detective fiction. We get details about his health, where he lived, his affairs, his writing, and what was sold to whom. It was interesting how Hammett's gritty, hard-boiled style started a new sub-genre in detective fiction. Again, Ward searched for the facts rather than settling for the legend about Hammett's life, and there was more information available for this time period.

I'd recommend this biography to fans of Dashiell Hammett who want to know more about his life.

The man who created the hard boiled detective

While I have not read the books, I am a huge fan of Dashiel Hammett's films. I love the THIN MAN and the MALTESE FALCON. The characters and the dialogue are fantastic. This book gives tremendous insight into how he was able to create such memorable characters.
As you read about his life and his exploits he was in some ways a dichotomy. He was a man suffering from TB, a disease that frequently laid him low and in hospital yet he was also this macho man who was a Pinkerton detective, and by all accounts, a good one.
The disease may have been the last catalyst for him to live his life on the edge and yet, when it became necessary, he could knuckle down and get things done. His propensity for excesses was fed by his time in Hollywood. In all likelihood, there was much more potential that was never realized but for the booze and the partying.
Certainly the body of work that he left was an indicator of his genius. He recreated the detective genre that has remained, to this day, the foundation stone of the hard boiled man of action who is not above a wink and a nod.
He must have been a fascinating yet frustrating man. I am glad I had the chance to "meet" him.The

How did Sam Hammett move from being a Pinkerton detective to writing detective novels? Did being a Pinkerton detective make him a better writer? Ward states that Hammett had the talent to write fiction, poetry and advertising copy but what gave him is narrative style was his work writing reports for the detective agency. The 'Eye That Never Sleeps' also provided Hammett with a cast of indelible characters which he honed and broadened. Ward spent a great deal time in the Library of Congress reading the reports of Pinkerton agents and finds a style of writing that is both 'just the facts' and highly descriptive of criminal environments and situations.

A high school dropout and U.S. army ambulance driver who acquired tuberculosis, Hammett joined the agency at an entry level and he worked to overcome poverty and keep his wife and children under the same roof. The detective magazine market provided a small income while recovery from bouts of TB and while he developed his unique narrative style and voice. Hammett wrote what he knew: San Francisco and investigations. Along with hours he spent in the Library of Congress, Ward mined local San Fransisco literary historians and Hammett researchers.

The Lost Detective: Becoming Dashiell Hammett is a brief biography, full of anecdotes, travels and a glimpse of the American 1920s and 1930 popular culture of literature and film. Ward's narrative style is accessible to most readers who a bring to the book a general knowledge of Hammett's career and impact on literature.
