About the Author
Dann has enjoyed the mixed blessing of moving his family three out of every four years since marrying his college sweetheart in the '90s. They've lived in three countries, six U.S. states, and three Chinese provinces. Dann and his wife Tammy have taught adults and kids of all ages and have been business owners, youth and children's directors, education consultants, and general managers of a coffee shop and culture center. They have six children, none of them born in the same place, three biological and three adopted.

While this was an important book on adoption, and while it also offered an intimate survey of Hope; I enjoyed this book mostly because of the quality of the writing. I read books that are "good for me" - often reluctantly, because they just aren't that much fun to read. I read non-fiction books because I know I should. This non-fiction, good-for-me book was one I simply did not want to put down because Dann Johnson is just that good as a writer. He seems to inherently know the littlest things that make a book a good read . . . starting with the title. It has deep meaning which he develops throughout the story. The title offers a play on words and ideas, all of which become important in the telling of their family story. It stands alone with meaning all its own. And that's just the title! If you crave the reading of good writing like I do - read Lily Was the Valley.

Having taken a few rather cathartic days after this moving read, I’ve realized that at least for me, it’s not really a story fore mostly about adoption. I came away seeing adoption here simply as the raw material that God chose to use in the Johnson’s lives for Dann to express some universal struggles, realities and revelations that are common to all believers somewhere along their journeys. The appeal of this book is how Dann digs bravely and deeply into the emotions that many feel, but few are willing to explore, identify and express so poignantly. While that in itself would be enough to make this a valuable reading experience, his gifted storytelling style, chill personality that comes across, and laugh-out-loud dry sense of humor that permeates this book, are all great bonuses!

Do you like surprises?

Never have I read a more astounding story of human love than Dann Robert Johnson’s Lily Was the Valley: Undone by Adoption. At times I wondered how anyone other than Christ himself could love the way Dann and his wife, Tammy, loved this toddler they had not yet met. How could their devotion only grow despite the circumstances they faced? I had to ask myself whether it was in me to love like that. Still, the most wrenching question came mid-book, not I to myself but God to Dann. I'll never forget it, nor Dann’s answers—initially...finally.
Although this is Dann Johnson’s first book, his writing ranks with the best I’ve seen. If you’re searching for an unforgettable read—humor, depth, poignancy—this is it.
