All the dots are connected in this great read!

When I was first privy to knowing what the title of the book was, I was unsure of what the story would reveal, more especially when ‘connecting the dots backwards’. However, when this book landed in my Kindle App last week, I was blown over! This is one powerful book, that dives head first in to a heart wrenching real life story without sparing any punches. Whilst the book ends on a very positive note I am happy to say, the journey that the author (Maureen; AKA Mo) takes us on is a real life drama normally associated with a Hollywood movie. As I read through the chapters I found myself at times getting wrapped up in the emotions and sad and angry at the situations Maureen was place in. Of course when one plans to write about a true life story that involves deep personal feelings, and situation, it is essential that one has to ‘bare all’ so to speak, along with the good, bad and ugly. Anyone that can appreciate the truth being spoken, more especially when one touches on areas that are most often not spoken about within families, or where situations are simply ignored, which in its self is very sad.

I have known the author for several years although as work colleagues and more recently as a great friend who carries so much insight on life. Well done Mo, you are a true inspiration to the many women out there who find themselves in a similar situation! Thank you for taking that bold step to tell your story and for sharing so much of the darkness that you had to endure and for the bright sunshine that you, your son and daughter now enjoy, which I know will always continue.

Misleading title and content of no actual value

The title of this book is completely misleading. This booklet is explaining how to read sheet music at its most basic level, explaining the rudiments of sheet music, such as the clef, the key, note placement, staffs, etc. All, things so basic you should have learned them in elementary school, and that you can find for free on the Internet within 30 seconds.

The term "Music Theory" as such describes something different entirely. It relates to things such as scales, progressions, modes, modulations, etc. The book contains none of that. Not even a hint of it, so it was a major disappointment and good money wasted on a small pamphlet that has no actual value.

Its great! Funny and simple

I took band in junior high and am now rediscovering my instrument in college on my own. I forgot a lot of stuff since junior high and got this book as a present. Its great! Funny and simple, even when it explains tough ideas, like key signatures. The tricks he uses to get information across are great and have helped me a lot. This is a great book for anyone from junior high to adult!

About the Author
In his forty-eight year career as a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Father Gerald Kleba has served in a wide variety of missions as a hospital chaplain, retreat master, university professor, and primarily as a parish priest. In this capacity he has ministered mostly in economically depressed areas of inner-city communities. He has also served in a rural parish and sprawling new suburb. His ministry spans the excitement of Vatican II to the present with the stunning retirement of Pope Benedict XVI and the surprising election of Francis as Bishop of Rome.

See inside what a loving servant looks like.

If you want to see inside the heart of a servant, read "Are you still a Priest?" by Fr. Gerry Kleba. My heart was on a rollercoaster as he
shared story after story of love, caring, heartbreak and healing. As a father and grandfather, I could feel the ups and downs, pain and joys of
the parents in these stories. Father Gerry brought me into lives of these children and families and I saw in him a loving and caring minister who made such a difference in the lives of those he met. I am reminded in the midst of so much going on in our world, that there are loving, caring priests who have given of themselves so that others may live.

I am very blessed to know Father Gerry and am in thankful wonder of this servant of God and his children.

A faithful and compassionate servant

I found this book very fascinating. It is a collection of stories about various people with whom the author has had close personal and often profound relationships, born out of crisis situations As I know the author, I recognized many of the people and places he speaks about. His ministry is a testimony to the countless number of priests who labor daily and with great fidelity to bring the love and compassion of Jesus into the lives of the people they serve, despite the scandals of a few abusers. It is heartwarming to hear the witness of a loving and faithful servant.

Inspiring Accounts of a Catholic Priest's Ministry to Youth

One might not expect a book of stories about priestly ministry to be a page turner. But this fast-paced narrative spanning some fifty years proves to be just that. Father Gerald Kleba, priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, served in various pastoral capacities in rural, suburban, inner-city, and university settings. As a dedicated servant, the priestly Gerry gives himself repeatedly to circumstances that often swell to mythical proportions. Yet their poignancy touches the heart. An inner-city lad becomes a poster boy. A girl’s baby brother is dying. At her First Communion an alert little girl rescues Kleba’s homily. A disabled boy is a football hero. A student at an elite girls’ high school discovers a need to serve the poor at home and abroad. An impressionable little girl later as an adult wants proudly to be included in Kleba’s book about priestly attention to youth. A lovely university coed is, as Kleba sees her, “a walking manifestation of the church’s social doctrine…. (78).” A young drummer for his parish choir becomes the valedictorian at a prestigious university. Encouraged by a celebrity baseball announcer, a boy overcomes a serious burn. A winsome preschooler and her rambunctious little brother claim heartfelt attention. A toddler is healed of her nearly fatal leukemia. A dying first-grader converses with his favorite movie personality. A celebrated pediatric neurosurgeon helps a boy with a brain tumor. A courageous child, slain by cancer, rests in the arms of his mother. And a fleeting encounter with a high schooler becomes an inspiring memory.

Offering challenges and support, snippets from the works of Pope Francis and other gifted writers garnish Kleba’s chapters. The universal nature of such counsel becomes vibrantly exemplified in Kleba’s ministry. In the same vein, his resolute commitment to living and leading according the Catholic Church’s social teachings is constantly evident. What Father Thomas Michel, SJ calls in his foreword the “shamefully true” recent history of clerical/hierarchical abuse of youth in the Catholic Church stands in stunning contrast to the laudable pastoral sensitivity and compassion exhibited in these stories. Kleba’s priestly journey is suffused with his hope in the power of Christ’s own priesthood, the power of redemption and new life. Thus, with this book he strives to show that for the Catholic priesthood and episcopacy, and indeed for the whole Church, “It is time,” as he says, “to rise up out of the ashes (6).”

Kleba is a gifted writer/story-teller. He paints vivid word-pictures of the settings in which he has ministered. He recounts with unmuted feeling the inner monologues, a gentle stream of consciousness, that stead him on his priestly way. He nimbly displays heartfelt affection. He colors his stories with whimsical humor and with laughter at himself. His mannerly text is not immune from an occasional expletive or bawdy punchline. He conveys with tenderness his parishioners’ emotions, whether exhilarating or gut-wrenching, and at times provokes to tears. Each chapter holds the reader’s interest, from the first paragraph to the last.

His vignettes reveal not only the effects of his care for the youths themselves but usually as well for their families. His ministry to youth is repeatedly family ministry. Siblings and parents of the young people he serves are characteristically recipients of his pastoral dedication. Such influence is typically felt even decades later. Families remain endeared to him, and he delights in how young people once entrusted to his care attain as adults admirable maturity and virtuous bearing.

There is in Kleba’s straightforward and humbling accounts of pastoral generosity some self-assurance that accompanies his exuberance. He thrives amid his people, comes alive as a pastor amid his sheep. While reading the book I found myself regularly musing: This is truly what good priests do. Father Kleba thus provides praiseworthy lessons in serving youth and their families. As an exemplary priest he is a model for all Christians. He and his kind deserve widespread acclaim.

An Unmarketed Product

"Hunting Accidents" is an enjoyable read, but it leaves the GBV mystique almost completely intact. It's hard to say whether this was Greer's intention or if he was limited in scope because of editorial constraints. For new fans, it's a great introduction. Between this book, the music (obviously), and assorted press on the band, new fans have a jumping off point that most of us lacked when we first heard the band. As an overview, this book succeeds. Greer doesn't dwell on any one era of GBV's career. But, again, this is both an attribute and a hindrance. The benefit is that "Hunting Accidents" is a quick and easy read. The drawback is that hardcore fans, especially those who have seen "Watch Me Jumpstart" and kept up with GBV over the years, will be left wishing for more depth and content. I, for one, am disappointed that at least 1/3 of the book is essentially a reprint of the much more complete online discography at [...] I would have liked more text--including more songs in the chapter where Pollard analyzes random titles from his vast catalogue. That section was the most rewarding part of the entire book, totally countering the allegation that Pollard's songs make no sense. The other exciting portion of the text is the anecdotal segments about "The Monument Club." To me, this explains Pollard's longevity and prolificacy: He has a musical, social, and familial support system that allows him to refuel creatively whenever he wishes. He takes the seemingly mundane and makes it extraordinary. This conclusion is understated in the text, but, to me, it is the book's greatest accomplishment.

I make music for soundtracks now...

Overall, this is a pretty informative, quick read. However, being a longtime, diehard GBV fan, I would have liked to have known more about the recording of the various albums, as well as have more time deveoted to some of the other important characters in the group, namely Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell. I think their stories are as essential to the success of GBV as Pollard's songwriting and vision for the band. The book just felt like too much Bob, not enough everyone else. Having met Bob on a number of occasions, I would say that he describes his personality fairly accurately (both good and bad points). Also, being an educator myself, I would have liked a little more to that storyline. Not for the novelty of it, just because I think it's great that someone in my profession can actually do this. It's amazing to me and Pollard has always been one of my heros because of it. Anyway, a worthwhile read either for the novice or the longtime fan.

A must-have for the members of various Guided by Voices fanclub/cults such as Postal Blowfish, Disarm The Settlers and Strong Lions. Spouses/significant others who have been amused or abused by the band and their fanatic following will no doubt enjoy as well.

And if reading the above paragraph makes no sense, then you Must Buy this book. Compulsive GbV fans of course will HAVE to get a copy, but others should read if they want a glimpse into the story of Wondering Boy Poet Robert Pollard. A great xmas gift for the indie music fan.

A FORGOTTEN AMERICAN HERO

If you look for Thomas Hart Benton in your local library, you will probably find only books about the artist. This is a really excellent biography of Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri - one of the giants of American politics in the pre-Civil War era.
Benton was a southern slaveholder who believed - and said - that slavery was an evil that would eventually collapse. He insisted that slavery should not be extended beyond its 1820 limits. (Henry Clay also believed this, but was reluctant to say so.) Eventually, he was driven from the Democratic Party for his beliefs, but considered himself a Democrat for the rest of his life.
Anyone with an interest in the period must read this book!
Many of the low-price Kindle books are pretty shoddy products. This book is beautifully put together and is free from typos and mangled special characters. But wait - there's more! it has an active table of contents and an active index!!!!!!

Love this book

I really enjoyed this book, not so much because of what it says about Benton but because here you have Teddy Roosevelt writing as a young man, before he became a politician. He makes no attempt at objectivity, his biases and prejudices are all out there for everyone to see. He seems to delight in laying into people he doesn't like and praising those he likes.

I got this book because I wanted to know more about Thomas Hart Benton, but I think I learned more about Roosevelt than Benton. That made it really worthwhile for me. I highly recommend this to any fan of Teddy Roosevelt. He was a man of strong convictions even in his 20's. And he is a very good writer.

American History during one of its most formative eras

After reading "Americas Great Debate" by Fergus Bordewich, I wanted to learn more about one of its central figures, Thomas Hart Benson. This Senator from Missouri, A Democrat representing the old south but also the new South(west). An orator, historian, indian fighter and man of Principle. A Unionist battling a mostly Southern Nullifiers. The author, Theodore Roosevelt, was a most suited writer. Both author and subject come from an era of tough swashbuckling leaders determined to make "Manifest Destiny" happen. This is a tale of the settling of Our country at its best and most courageous. My favorite was the story of a wild, massive bar fight among whose participants included Thomas Hart Benton and Andrew Jackson. They were evidently on opposite sides of the brawl. Andrew Jackson got shot and had to be carried out. He survived and became President. It's not certain who fired the shot. Jackson and Benton became friends and political allies. If one believes that todays politics is partisan and disappointingly unproductive then this tale will be an eye opener as well as fun reading
.

About the Author

Jim McInnis retired in 2008 after more than thirty years as a manager in financial services. He then started a successful sales consulting business. Jim used some of his corporate experience overcoming difficult obstacles and perseverance to help motivate himself during difficult parts of his journey on the Camino de Santiago.

Jim is a husband, father, and grandfather. He resides in San Juan Capistrano, California, with his wife, Robin. Jim and Robin believe in giving back to the community, so they have been actively involved with Boystown youth for the past eighteen years mentoring, planning events, and implementing incentive programs for good grades. Jim and Robin are also involved in local community service programs with their home church, Saddleback Church.

I loved reading 500 miles of gratitude. Jim's story is filled with many lessons that served and guided him throughout the walk and his life. I laughed and cried because of the simple beauty that still exist in the people he meets along his journey.

Wallace McRae is a third-generation cattle rancher in southeastern Montana, and a widely acclaimed writer and performer of cowboy poetry. He was the recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and was appointed to the National Endowment for the Arts Council by President Clinton. McRae has been featured on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion and has performed across the United States and been featured in cultural exchanges in Australia, Scotland and England. McRae's poems have appeared in numerous cowboy poetry anthologies. He is the author of The Cowboy Curmudgeon and lives on the family's Rocker Six Ranch.

Nearly every morning one of us would wrangle the horses. Occasionally there was other, more compelling, work to be done, but we preferred to ride. We kept a wrangle horse 'up' by picketing him to the gatepost at the back door of our grandparents' house.

As was the case with the ones we rode, we rotated the wrangle horse. Not all members of the cavvy were fit to ride to gather the rest, however. Some were afflicted with defects-a fistula, cinch sore or wire cut. Some were packing just a bit too much of that hot Thoroughbred blood crazying them up, so using them for running in the other horses rendered them mentally unfit to ride for weeks. Some were either permanently or temporarily unsound. Some were not sufficiently broken and considered too green for the job. . . .

Our shared grandfather was the only adult on the ranch who understood, and believed, our remuda to be comprised of real horses. They most definitely were not mere stick horses. From his rocking chair on the screened porch, Grandpa would watch us wrangle. About the Author

McRae began writing poerty over twenty-five years ago in an attempt to record the values, humor and plight of his occupation. Three books of his poetry have been published.

It is difficult to be objective reviewing this attractively bound collection of short stories without some pride in the evolution of cowboy poetry since the mid-1980s, within which Wallace McRae has been a major influence and mainstay. And though there are several published collections of short stories on the genre's bookshelves, STICK HORSES will be what future collections will be measured against, in part because of his accomplished storytelling style, but also because of its authentic insight.

McRae cements his background with great characters such as "Wilkie", a Frost-like `Hired Man' with a penchant for alcohol who came and went from the ranch without the formality of ever being `hired or fired' when McRae was a boy. Whether enjoying the tender awkwardness of his relationship with Cheyenne neighbor "Albert Tallbull" or laughing through "Census" taken to extreme and ridiculous hyperbole, McRae is an excellent storyteller. And not all the stories are humorous, not all questions answered as in `Trespassing' which harkens back to much of McRae's poetry that confesses and examines certain idiosyncrasies of ranch life.

Storytelling is lost art for many obvious reasons, but these valuable antidotes tell who we are by where we've come from. These tales are full of common sense and a once common rural ethic that has been lost to most all of us with progress. And though these stories may be a window to understanding for urban academics and outsiders, a glimpse of a culture past, this collection may be more important for those still living in rural settings as McRae validates a cast of characters from a lifestyle that is truly and uniquely ours. Wallace McRae is a master storyteller

I purchased this book to kill some down time while on a business trip, not expecting very much I started the first story and finished the book that evening. Each story is a true gem, lovingly told by a master storyteller told with wit, love and deep emotion for all the wonderful characters.

About the Author
A.E. HOTCHNER is a life-long writer and the author of seventeen books, among them O.J. in the Morning, G & T at Night and Papa Hemingway, a critically acclaimed 1966 memoir of his thirteen-year friendship with Ernest Hemingway. Hotchner's memoir, King of the Hill, was adapted into a film by Steven Soderbergh. In addition to his writing career, Hotchner is co-founder, along with Paul Newman, of Newman's Own foods. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and his indispensable parrot, Ernie.

The women in Hemingway’s life. From his overbearing mother to his find of a lifetime, to the woman who took him away from her, his relationships caused him to ricochet like a pinball. All the mistakes were his own. All the regrets deserved. Incredibly, he confessed over decades to AE Hotchner, and encouraged him to take notes and record their conversations. Hotchner has had a lot to do with Hemingway publications and productions, but this is personal.

The book is a distillation of those notes and recordings, a real recollection (as opposed to fawning autobiography) of the women and what they meant to him, how he treated them, and the resulting damage. Hotchner was a vital player in the recollection, and he weaves a story of frustration that sweeps over continents and decades. It’s not padded; it barely tips a hundred pages. But it is thorough, emotional and deeply felt.

Hemingway blew it. Everybody told him so right at the time, in advance. He compounded the errors by disgracing his gang of Parisian friends in his novel. They ditched him together, all at once, right at the book launch. He was fearless, but also naïve. His wounds were just as often self inflicted as earned. Hotchner relates it personally and faithfully, but interestingly, Hemingway never seems to have used the word or the concept of betrayal. Odd for an author who saw human foibles so clearly.

As for Hotchner, the more I read by and about him, the more I want to.

Others have already recounted the importance of this book and the context that it provides.

There is one particular section though which stays with me, long after finishing this book (pages 148-152). Hotchner writes about an unplanned meeting between just Hemingway and Hadley, which occurred in Paris at Lipp's. This reportedly turned out to be the last time the two would ever see each other again. The details of their discussion was both beautiful and sad, and I am happy it was told.

Ernest Hemingway: His Loves, Marriages and Infidelities...

Author A.E. Hotchner (1920-) a notable Hemingway scholar and biographer enjoyed a 14 year friendship with Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), he would earn Hemingway's trust and become a confidant. "Hemingway in Love: His Own Story" is a good engaging read complete with personal photos. Hotchner, was also friends with Hemingway's widow Mary Welch (1908-1986) explains the delay in revealing this story was out of respect for her.

In the early 1960's there was much stigma related to mental illness, a limited knowledge and understanding compared to what we know today. Visiting Hemingway at Saint Mary's Hospital, the author was greatly concerned about his mental health. Hemingway had already undergone psychiatric ETC treatments, yet he seemed edgy and paranoid, convinced he was being overly monitored, his conversations/phone was tapped. Later, Hotchner discovered there was in fact, truth to this.

Fans of Hemingway have enjoyed the recent novels related in particular to his first and second marriages. Hotchner reveals the inside story of how Hemingway was warned by his good friend F. Scott Fitzgerald of the socialite/heiress Pauline Pfeiffer (m.1927-1940) who was deliberately out to seduce him and break-up his marriage, so she could obviously have him for herself. Fitzgerald urged him to banish her at once from his life! It was unsettling to see Pauline worm her way into the Hemingway's marriage, even pretending to be interested in his and Hadley's young son Bumby. Hemingway wanted to keep both his wife and Pauline in his life, since he loved them both. Of course, this wasn't to be.
The dynamics of these relationships are explained and explored in fascinating detail from the author's recollection; though the reason for waiting until 2015 to tell this story raise questions concerning credibility. 3* GOOD. ~ With thanks to the Seattle Public Library.

Screamingly hilarious, fabulously entertaining.

“Donoghue, Donoghue, Donoghue…” You’ve gone and done it again. If you’re looking for something to lift your spirits, this author has the ability to tickle your funny bone until it hurts. Looking at the true life of a front line officer, Police, Arrests and Suspects is just as screamingly hilarious as John Donoghue’s other books: Police, Crime & 999, Police, Lies & Alibis and Shakespeare My Butt. I’ve spotted a few tweets and read reviews on this author’s books, where readers have claimed to be caught in the embarrassing situation of laughing out loud on public transport. Hands up! Guilty. I now have my official local transport looney badge. How Donoghue combines razor sharp wit with subtle delivery and superb timing leaves me in awe. His ability to communicate the less savoury side of everyday policing and the real danger response officers often face, making it obvious that they ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’, only makes the book more compulsive reading. The recognisable traits of certain criminal types are genius. You can feel the despair emanating from the officers and see every roll of the eyes. The characterisation, along with the writing, is simply brilliant. The CBT incident (no spoilers) literally brought tears to my eyes – Ouch! – and the “killed myself in the mirror” line and the image that created will stay with me for a long time. There are many such nuggets of pure gold. I’m smiling as I type. If ever you spot someone laughing uncontrollably on a gloomy, grey day, ask them what they’re reading. I bet it’ll be John Donoghue. If they’re just looking as miserable as sin, recommend them a JD tonic. No, not the amber coloured stuff. In fact go one further, make a kindly donation to the humourless and buy them a John Donoghue book. Uniquely witty, eye-openingly informative and fabulously entertaining, I would highly recommend any one of them.

so it actually makes for quite a fun but at times unbelievable read

Police, Arrests & Suspects is a work of non fiction about the authors own experiences as a police officer.

The author shares with us stories of the more funnier and strangest call outs he has been to, so it actually makes for quite a fun but at times unbelievable read.

There is one chapter which he dedicates to, what I can only explain as the most idiotic, 999 calls that they receive. Obviously it really shouldn't be a laughing matter that people are wasting police time as well as tying up phone lines with anything but emergencies, but some of the things that people phone up about are just so ridiculous that my jaw dropped open in shock more than a few times. It is really quite worrying that some of the human race are unable to understand the meaning of the word emergency.

My favourite story had to be the very first one of the authors experience of pulling over a drink driver. Again it isn't a laughing matter as it is a very serious offence, but the lady who obviously thinks she's above the law was very humorous. I'm sure when she sobered up she will look back on that particular incident with shame and regret, well I would hope so anyway.

Police, Arrests & Suspects will give readers the chance to see a side of being a police officer that you won't see in a movie or a crime series on television. Even though most of the stories are of a light hearted nature, there are a couple of more serious ones in there. It certainly made me value what our police officers do even more after reading this book.

A very different type of crime book but one I think readers will certainly be entertained by.

I bought this book on August 5th. It immediately attached itself to my reading habit and I didn't want to put it down. However, duty called in the not too distant future and I had to sleep before Mickey Mouse's hands reached the auto-erotic position (5:30am for the less imaginative of you). I made myself read "Police, Suspects &Arrests" more slowly than my mind wanted to devour it. Some books are meant to be savored. This is one of them.
Needless to say, I heartily endorse John Donoghue's book. He has shown me, once again, through this book as he did earlier in his others, that being a cop anywhere can be easily related to regardless on which side of any ocean or continent you work and live. His humor is contagious and his writing skill is remarkable. You don't have to be a cop to understand his point of view or the point he is making. (But it certainly doesn't hurt as he caused me to remember many serious and humorous incidents in my 42+, and continuing, career as a cop n the USA.)
For those cops, such as myself, who are too lazy or simply disinclined too attempt to record the ups and downs of policing, I absolutely appreciate John's successful effort in doing just that.
While I anxiously await his next book, let me strongly as possible, with all the sincerity an old cop can muster, order you (or strongly suggest, if you prefer a more socially correct approach) to go to your local bookseller or trip the "Internet Fantastic" to Amazon.com and buy this book. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did. While your there, get his other books, too. They're all more than worth it.
