Great reference!

Every year I buy this book great for referencing times surgeries, physical therapy, times to travel...planting flowers, garden best times for crops. Great reference. Very disappointed it was not for sale for almost two months....but great to have now.

WILL NEVER BE WITHOUT IT!!!!

I"ve been buying this annual for many years now........I use the 'best dates' for my dental cleanings, eye exams, and chiropractic treatments....also use it 'slow hair growth" dates.....and every year I give family & friends the best dates to cut their lawns for slow growth.....they razz me about it, but if I don't get it to them early in the season they ask where it is!!! lol...........

Also have a friend with a small bakery business.....there's even a 'best baking dates' list!!!!!! she was skeptical but tried it and was amazed at the results.

so yes, this stuff DOES WORK...............I could never be without it.

I will add, on a sad note, that Ms. Palmer's health is not the best right now.......I spoke to her on the phone a few months ago and she will be turning the almanac over to someone else soon........she also said she's had problems finding a typist to do the work, as it's so involved.....

anyway, GET THIS ALMANAC NOW AN EVERY YEAR.... you'll be amazed at what it can do for you.

I cannot recommend it highly enough!!!!!!!!

TRULY REQUIRED READING

This book takes us, like Conrad' s Marlow, to the edge of the abyss. The image of Mengel distorts from a 'mere' cold blooded murderer into the essence of the abomination of evil. David Paul's persistence proves that all details must be analyzed and connected if one is to find truth. Intense from start to finish

This riveting book brings back to life a horrific series of crimes that would appear unconnected but with the true detective work of David Paul the pieces of the puzzle are connected. Time may have forgotten this story but the families and authors have not. Suspenseful writing and superb investigation of a cold case make this a book any reader will be fascinated by.

In 1975, I was recruited out of school by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Those are the guys on horses with the red coats and "smokey-the-bear" hats. Except that in Canada, they are also the FBI, DEA, CIA and Secret Service all rolled into one.

I was sent for specialized training in Canada and the United States to become an undercover operator. In the past 20 years I worked all over the world, particularly in the United States, posing as a gangster, a drug trafficker and finally as a money launderer. I ran phony businesses in the United States and Canada where I laundered money for drug traffickers and other bad guys. I never got to wear the cool uniform or ride a horse though.

This book is not an autobiography. It's about money laundering. Because of the kind of work I did, I'm not allowed to tell about a lot of the things that I did. But it does have a lot of anecdotes about the time I spent undercover. The book is basically about how organized crime and terrorism are really the same thing and how they rub up against regular people every day.

Not too many people really care about what happens in Canada so I wrote this book with an international audience in mind. I think I spent more time in the U.S. anyway. I tried not to take myself too seriously when I wrote it. There are some funny parts and a few sad ones. And I hope you like it. My friends did. (At least, they said that they did.)

Very, very little information about money laundering

I was very excited to get and read this book. But after I started reading, it became a never ending disappointment. I kept thinking, "maybe it will pick up in a couple of chapters and will have some actual information." However I got to the end and I still hadn't learned anything. In my opinion this was a terrible book for these reasons:

There was hardly any actual information. Mostly the book was full of stories from the author's experiences or just made up stories to try to illustrate the evils of money laundering. Even when the author would talk about something interesting, he would cut off, nearly mid-sentence, and basically say that he can't tell you about that. I understand not wanting to educate the world about the most current forms of money laundering, but being introduced to something and then denied (repeatedly) was very annoying. The author could have wrote about money laundering of the 1960's to 1990's where those techniques don't work anymore, but he just didn't really talk about anything at all. Since he wrote a book titled: "Crime School: Money Laundering: True Crime Meets the World of Business and Finance" I expected him to actually say something about money laundering. He might as well have titled it, "Crime School: How to grow carrots, skydive, and become an astrophysicist" and the title would have been almost as accurate.

The book was poorly written. The table of contents doesn't even match up with the pages in the book. Also, the chapter titles had absolutely nothing to do with what was in those chapters. The best example is in "Bankruptcy of Murder Inc." This chapter doesn't talk about "bankruptcy" or of the infamous "Murder Inc" that contracted out assassinations for the mob.

Five minutes on the internet with your favorite search engine yields more information than reading the entire book! Throughout the entire book the author doesn't even talk about the three stages of money laundering: Placement, Layering, and Integration. Some have praised this book, saying that it is a must read for people in the banking industry to keep from unknowingly helping in money laundering. I also disagree with this because all the author really ever says in the book about this topic is to hire someone else to check your bank to see if you are laundering money. So overall this book was worthless to everyone on every level. I bought this book used for just a couple bucks and I still wish I could get my money back.

The stunning reality of financial crime exposed!

Mathers, an internationally recognized forensic expert, has really brought a useful book to the table for those interested in how exactly money laundering or big-money crime affects them. A former undercover RCMP officer, Mathers laundered money himself for many years; out of the trunks of cars, in the backrooms of seedy bars... and at banks and brokerage offices on Bay Street in Toronto, on Wall Street in New York, and, get this, in lawyer's offices, and sometimes in judge's chambers. By describing the problem, Mathers makes the connection for us between $100 million cocaine deals and why and how the drug dealer can be a client at the same bank as you. Bankers- please read the chapter on "Domestic Banking and Securities"; it is NOT the boring cont-ed you've read at industry conferences. It IS a highly readable and instructive description of what bankers *should* be doing, and how they can understand the purposes of the legislation they struggle with. Countless first hand descriptions and case studies of how he did the crimes as an operative for the RCMP, FBI, DEA etc.- and Mathers turns it into useable information for us. I recommend CRIME SCHOOL to financial professionals because it warrants their time: this book should be required reading. I do not recommend this book to natives of Dominican Republic or Quebec... But I do recommend the book to all others because it is hilarious, informative and telling. A great book! -MW

How bank tellers and corporate execs can avoid pen time

The book is aimed at those who legitimately handle large amounts of money. It doesn't have to be 'their' money, any supervision of cash will do. This includes bank tellers, small business owners, and corporate executives. Since they all 'handle' money, they all risk 'being nice' and going to jail for their troubles.

Mathers tries to shares some street smarts. The book doesn't try to 'explain' money laundering as much as put you 'inside' the process. The look and feel is given first priority. Thus, the author spends a lot of time toying with the lingo. You will learn about 'backstops' (a false history), 'beards' (intermediaries), 'bottoms' (what you owe), 'busting a cap' (discharge a bullet), 'Diming out' (informing), 'Dry conspiracy' (cop talk for an arrest with no contraband), 'juice' (interest rate), 'pooch' (fellow with no respect) and 'playing for shape' (willing to kill to curry favor). Mathers constantly belittles the intelligence of the crooks. Crime is easy, but getting away with it for long is difficult.

Along these lines, Mathers works hard to debunk popular perceptions. First, Hollywood doesn't do a good job of familiarizing us with 'real' crooks. Crooks don't look like Hollywood gangsters, they look like Joe average. Second, the crooks don't need high tech tricks to pull off their capers. All they need is a little, apparently harmless cooperation. For example, Mather describes the 'muffin man' method. The muffin man simply offers his bank teller a muffin every time he visits the bank. After giving away $5 worth of muffins, the recipient bank teller is likely to bend a rule. That bent rule may launder $100,000 in cash ($10,000+ profit to the crook). Additionally, it is all that is needed to put the teller in jail.

Mather makes his points by relentlessly bringing the reader down to the gutter level. Half the message is just the lingo and description of the terrain. Learn how to talk prison lingo, how to survive standing in line with a bunch of crooks, and most important, how a silly, everyday mistake can put you behind bars.

This is a book about avoiding the mistakes that have put many an otherwise innocent person in jail. Read and learn!

I love the honesty and reality with which the author shares her life. At the end of each chapter, in a section titled "A God Moment," she shares a God truth gleaned from her situation that we can apply in our own life. It stirs hope to believe and trust God to work in each of us, even using our worst situations to bring something beautiful for His glory. It will inspire and give hope!

In this enlightening work, the author (Real Choices, Questar, 1994), a syndicated columnist with the Religious News Service and an occasional commentator for National Public Radio, explores the forms of worship and devotion in Orthodoxy. She takes the reader through a year of liturgical worship and social activity in the small, highly motivated congregation of Holy Cross Antiochian Orthodox Church in Catonsville, Maryland, where her husband, a former Episcopal priest, is the founding pastor. Holy Cross is not a typical Orthodox parish, for most of its members (like the pastor and his family) are converts from Protestantism. The author's spiritual inclination, as the reader quickly learns, is toward charismatic and spirit-filled devotion. Enthusiastic and fervent, she often concerns herself with justifying her choice of Orthodoxy, and its devotional practices (e.g., the reverencing of icons), to the Protestants who constitute her main audience. With both humor and depth, NPR commentator and syndicated columnist Mathewes-Green describes a year in the richly liturgical life of the Eastern Orthodox Church, as experienced in a small Maryland parish founded by a group of recent converts. North America is currently witnessing a remarkable growth in the Orthodox Church, a faith distinguished by its icons, mystical writings, and vibrant ancient traditions. Mathewes-Green tells us what it's like to enter this unfamiliar and at first sight daunting world. Raised a nominal Catholic, she became a skeptic as a student and then embraced Hinduism, before returning to Christianity with her husband, Gary, as a result of an unexpected religious experience during their honeymoon. In 1977 Gary was ordained an Episcopal priest, but 15 years later, frustration with doctrinal and moral confusion in the Anglican Church led him, and eventually his wife and three teenage children, to Orthodoxy. Mathewes-Green's narrative is a 12-month journal, in which we get to know the 30-odd pioneers of the new parish as they make their way through their Church's intriguing cycle of festivals and fasts. We meet Gary in his new role as an Orthodox priest; Basil, a larger-than-life Greek who has rediscovered his early faith; and the young couples who form the bulk of this lighthearted but fervent community. Mathewes-Green intersperses anecdotes about her friends and family with vivid descriptions of the services and their ancient texts. While she succeeds in writing about this traditional Eastern Christian faith from a contemporary, distinctively American perspective, she does not pursue her insight that Orthodoxy has a special appeal to men, and she tends to play down the role of the different ethnic jurisdictions in American Orthodoxy. An excellent resource.

It all began when my roommate started dating an Orthodox guy. I was intrigued. I had never heard much about the Orthodox church, never thought much about the Orthodox Church. However, since that time I have visited their church a few times, including once during Pascha (Orthodox Easter). I was still intrigued, but I had a lot of questions, and nobody to answer them. "Facing East" helped. It didn't answer all of my questions, but it gave me a place to start. I'm not going to tell you that I'm going to convert to Orthodoxy because of this book. I don't know yet what I'm supposed to do about the Orthodox church. However, for those who are looking for something that will give you more of an idea of what being Orthodox is all about without having to struggle through heavy theological texts, this book may be just what you're looking for. It's light enough to keep one's interest, yet serious enough to answer some major questions. I highly recommend this book.

Deeply Personal, Very Human, Very Important

I think this book is very important to anyone interested in the Orthodox Church. It's not the only book you'll want to read, but it supplements the other great books out there in a unique and important way.

This book is not a treatise on Thology or practice. There are a number of good books available to cover these topics. Instead, it's a personal memoir. It tells the story of a woman, a family, and a congregation as they come into their faith and tradition. There's the feel of conversation over a cup of coffee here as Mrs. Mathewes-Green talks in an engaging and humorous style about the experience of discovering a faith and building a church. It takes something that can be very intimidating - the discovery of an ancient and deep faith and tradition that is very alien to modern American culture - and makes it very human and very accessible.

If you want to get right into Theology, History, Spirituality, and Practice, Read Biship Kallistos Ware's "The Orthodox Way(Spirituality)," "The Orthodox Church (History)," Clark Carlton's "The Faith (Theology)" and some of the other great books available. These are all important. The most important piece of exploring Orthodoxy, however, is to "come and see." Experience the worship and life of the Church. It can be intimidating at first, however. But Mathewes-Green makes it so much more accessible. Give it a try!

A Beautiful Read

At last a mass market read for what was a hidden faith. This book truly captures the mysticism, beauty and depth of the oldest of Christian Faiths. It only strenghthened my already devout calling, and shows how the burgeoning conversion of disenchanted Catholics and Protesdants will slowly and quietly reshape American Christianity, while at the same time remaining steadfast to it's unchanged, timeless doctrines.
In an Era of TV preachers selling a packaged Jesus like toohepaste or any other product, dying churches due to compromising principles in the name staying "current", and the loss of depth, aestheticism, mystery and soul in an increasing selfish, commercial, "I want it now" world, this book is a must read.
It will take you back to how Christianity was once practiced, and at the same time show you it is still alive and well.

Having spent 40 years in Human Resources from an intern to a VP, I have been skeptical of career advice books in the past. But this book is spot on. I plan to give it to my adult children and other people I care about and mentor. It provides very practical and savvy advice. Good performance and authenticity are the basic building blocks for a successful career that one can be proud of and this book acknowledges that but then goes on to provide very specific and helpful guidance to obtain the recognition one deserves. I would encourage those starting out in their careers to read this book, those in that critical 5 year point to read this book and those that are looking for a change or more recognition to read this book. In short, if you care about your career - read this book.

I have had the honor of knowing both the author Dr. Mary Jane Vance and Susan Reynolds. As many years as I had known Susan and her father Joe the information in this compelling book served to educate me even further. I am even more impressed with this remarkable young lady after reading "If You Knew Susan". I found out so many things I did not know about this wonderful family even living two door down from them for many years. Every young girl should read this book for strength and inspiration on how to have fun in everything you do even when faced with disappointment. I wish I had known her better.

A WONDERFUL AND ENGAGING STORY

I’m delighted to have read this book. It was recommended to me as model of a memoir book. My question about memoir writing in general was not answered, but I discovered something better. A WONDERFUL AND ENGAGING STORY. In addition, I love books which lead to exposure of new things. For me a couple of examples from this book would be: Nina Simone’s Pirate Jenny, and William Wordsworth’s Ode Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood; and other points which added to the depth of Jerry Waxler’s story.

I imagine many baby-boomers will understand, and possibly connect with a bulk of the story’s period (1960’s – mid 1970’s). Although I am from Generation X, I found this memoir relatable because it addresses the timeless theme regarding an individual’s path to self-discovery; and what has even been coined as “the hero’s journey” (although I don’t believe the modest author, would necessarily agree with the last part of my comment). Also, I appreciated the universal spirituality mentioned without being “preachy,” or seeking to convert; but expanded the meaning of the author’s story. Well done!

A Marvelous Memoir

I really enjoyed the story of Jerry Waxler's search for meaning in his life. I could relate to it even though I was living in an entirely different world at the time. While he was searching for himself in college I was getting married and having two children. I thought I knew exactly who I was back then but life gave me some twists and turns also. Now in my seventies I find myself searching for new directions for the last leg of my journey through life. I felt connected to the author and anxiously awaited what would happen next because his story was told simply and honestly. What made it even more interesting for me is that I have met Jerry at several writing conferences and have attended a few of his workshops on writing memoirs. He was so easy to talk to I find it hard to believe he once had trouble making friends and was a loner. Although I have been dragging my feet in writing my memoir about caring for my father when he was ill, reading Jerry's book has inspired me to get back to work on it and just tell my story.

Might make my top ten most wanted books

I am someone very much into offenders and working to heal them. I have this insane passion to understand why they do what they do and as sadistic as it may sound, I enjoy looking into even the roots of their methods. I think we have to understand there's a reason we do what we do even if society does not appreciate it and it is far from the cultural norm.

I was drawn into this book purely out of curiosity. "Most Wanted" - what did they do for them to be most wanted, who are these people, what did their past look like, and why did they run were points of interest on my mind. I think I have been interested in as much about the sociology of crime as I am about the psychology of their crime, although I identify myself aligned with the psychology community and have more passion in that realm of things.

Now, did I get all my answers? No, but I didn't expect to. This is an overview of ten people who committed crimes. It is a mere starting point to figure out who I want to focus on. The hardest part is picking who I wanted to research first. I found myself craving more, but that is typical of me when I am interested in something.

This book is not targeted to us psychologists into criminal psychology. It is targeted to the average public civilian curious to know more, and there is nothing wrong with that. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I say that with zero hesitation. It is a fantastic read for anyone who is or could be interested in a topic like this.

Amazing Story and Message! Highly Recommend.

This book is an amazing chronical from an adopted child's perspective of being abused, but it's also a book about perserverance, hope and finding oneself. I couldn't put it down. Loved reading it, and highly recommend!

Victim Blaming of Child Sexual Abuse Victims

The author retells to his reader his experience with child sexual abused.

Molested by his Aunt, he goes on to say this of his experience:

"When a child is punished with physical abuse but rewarded or validated after sexual abuse, does the understanding of what is right and what is wrong become occluded?"

The author suggests that children of child sexual abuse no longer retain the ability to understand right from wrong. Although posed as a question, ultimately, it casts an atmosphere of fear and distrust of the innocent victims of sexual abuse by those they love and trust. And although this is the author's "thoughts and feelings", what is the overall impact on these children? The Author claims that he wishes to bring light to abuse, when really what he has done is further reinforced a stigma of fear of children who have been abused, effectively blaming these children for the future strife that they will endure, while at the same time, reinforcing a damaging stigma.
