About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Brent M. Barber, now resides back in Raymore, Missouri. He has almost completed serving nearly 11 years of a 12.7 year sentence (151 months). Indicted and charged with 140+ counts of Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud, Wire Fraud, Mail Fraud, Transporting Stolen Funds Across State Lines, and Money laundering, US v. Barber was, at that time, the largest case of it's kind prosecuted in the Midwest, where he was facing 1,400 years in prison. Before going to prison he was a loving husband and father of one son, living in a prestigious private, gated community. Mr. Barber was one of the largest Section 8 Landlords in Kansas City, controlled over 1,000 rental units, bought and sold hundreds of homes, and owned nearly a million square foot of commercial space. He was one of, if not the largest tax sale buyer in Kansas City, the largest account holder in many local banks, and an affluent and respected businessman. Thoroughly convinced of his innocence and ignoring the counsel of those around him, Mr. Barber went to trial and was convicted. Unprepared for prison, he found himself in a new worldfrightening, dangerous and potentially deadly. Now out of prison at the age of 51, Mr. Barber is a man older, wiser, and anxiously looking forward to living each day, working to rebuild his life. He has written this book as a resource for those individuals and their families who will be navigating the unknown waters of the Federal Prison System. It is his hope that his life as a Federal Prisoner can be a helpful guide to coping and adjusting to a new reality, while also developing the necessary skills and mindset to successfully complete the sentence.

Informative, Honest and Helpful to navigate into an unknown environment

Helpful information presented in a very easy to read format. No one wants to be in a position to need this information but I appreciate the fact that it's recent and a first hand account of what to expect. It's crazy to think our justice system locks up so many people for things like this guy was convicted of. And then treat them like non humans knowing they were productive members of society and will be returning. This country needs to redesign our prisons, our tax money is needed for other things than incarceration. Lazy government employees and for profit companies are being encouraged to keep people from serving time successfully and returning to society.

They were all systematically lured into his trap and then beaten, tortured, raped, and strangled to death, and most victims found bore evidence of sexual torture: pubic hairs had been plucked out, genitals had been chewed, objects had been inserted into their rectums, and glass rods had been shoved into their penis and smashed. In the aftermath, two young men, Elmer Wayne Henley and David Brooks, Corll's two main accomplices in the heinous crimes, confessed that they had been forced to participate against their will, and Corll himself - by now having been shot dead by Henley - was the lone culprit in the torturous murders. But was he?

Not written as a book, but in a "screenplay" form

Returned this within 10 minutes of buying. THIS IS NOT A BOOK, but a screenplay. I have read a couple of books on Dean Corll and was very excited to read this too. Unfortunately, this is written as a play with stage or screen directions. No disrespect to the author, but I was lead to believe that this was a novel and not a play/screenplay. I reread the Amazon description before I returned the item to make sure I hadn't made a mistake. I hadn't. If you are interested in the Dean Corll story as I am, this may be something that interests you. I was just not interested in reading this in a screenplay format. Too bad.

Must Have for People Looking For A Job

This book is very informational! When I graduated in college, I was having a hard time in creating my own resume. I don't know what to put and I don't know what not to include in my resume. Since I was still inexperience it was a total pain for me, so I ended up copying the template of my dad's resume.

I've learned so much by reading this book, the power of changing simple words and descriptions into a move captivating style, the guide questionnaire will actually help you learn more about your experiences which at first you might think is not important to include. This book will also teach you how to rewrite your experiences into a more professional style.

Epic True Romance, from Siberia to Florida

Lovers of Romance, the United States, Cold War history, or Russian Literature will all cherish this memoir, written like the best epic romance novel. Romanov weaves a story that begins with a precocious love child (Svetlana) in a cold apartment, and a Christian family’s exile to Siberia, where another love child (Nick) develops integrity even while living among thugs and thieves. Twists, fate, and a mutual love of Science eventually brings them together in Cheboksary. They each excel in their fields, against the odds. They learn family loyalty from watching the movie "The Godfather." That loyalty is tested when one of their daughters marries an American. The Romanov family, planning a short visit just for the wedding, abandons their careers, prestige, and beloved books to keep everyone together. In yet another twist, an American Intelligence officer in the Reserves, Cyle, locates Nick in Florida, where the former national Russian coach and doctor struggles to make ends meet as a laborer and personal trainer. Cyle asks Nick to train the first group of olympic certified triathlon coaches.

Devoid of self-pity, Romanov subtly makes the reader appreciate the wonders of the United States, from disposable diapers to the chance to read The Bible or study Broadcast Journalism. Her writing, as she herself points out, matured with the story, which is worth sticking with despite some confused pronouns and phrasing in the first few chapters. Listen to her Russian accent as you read how this amazing couple let love pull themselves up from the bottom, first in one country, then again in this one. One last note: I have met Nicholas Romanov, and nothing Svetlana writes about him is exaggeration!

I have known this couple for more than 20 years. They are good people, both former University professors. Nicholas is a great sport scientist. But I never knew that Svetlana is also a great writer. This is a must read which you will not be able to put down.

About the Author

Mark Wayne Allen was born in Merryvillle, Louisiana.

He has been a quadriplegic since 1982, a further result of a car wreck that happened in 1978. With God’s help and blessings, he has lived through these events. He is a survivor in the truest sense.

Since his accidents, he has completed high school and went to Louisiana Tech University where he studied computers. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in business management.

Writing has long been his passion. He started, but never finished, his first novel at just 11 years of age as well as wrote several short stories and poems during his early youth. Looking into the future inspired a love for science fiction which, over the years, has evolved to include all fiction as well as the macabre.

Mark wrote two short stories and several poems published in a short-lived e-zine called Dementia. In 2013, he published the science fiction book Star Siege which was written during his years at Louisiana State University. Since then, he has placed in several contests since and even had a first place poem.

Having lived in the North, South, East, and as far West as Wyoming has given him the opportunity to meet and talk with a diverse group of people as well as an appreciation for diverse cultures.

Currently, he lives in Merryville, La. with his wife Kelley, where he is an alderman and mayor pro-tem.

Truly Inspirational!

Inspirational book! This is a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. Mr. Allen perseveres through some of life's most challenging obstacles and emerges from those events with a newfound passion for life. Where most people would give up he chose to overcome. Emotionally gripping, Mr. Allen gives the reader an intimate look at the joys of his life as well as his darkest times where he is literally fighting for his life! This book will cause the reader to be grateful and passionate about the gift of life and shows that no matter how dire the situation is you can grow and thrive with the right mindset and support system around you!

Brilliant and Engaging!

I don't usually enjoy autobiographical essays, but my writing partner told me that these were different, and she was right. Wallace explores her life and her family by thinking of them in light of the different myths that help her to understand their secrets, lies, passions, and griefs, and it's really engaging. Occasionally she switches from myth to popular culture, like the essay called "Harold, Maude, and Me," the one about Nancy Drew, called "How She Drew Me In," or the one called "Other People's Pools," that is in response to Cheever's story "The Swimmer," as well as The Odyssey, and I think I liked these the best.

Conozco a Mayte como una mujer intelectual, valiente, libre, redimida; precisamente por eso, al saber de su libro no quise solo leerlo sino darme el homenaje (¡Qué egoista soy!) de tener de ella un poco mas de su esencia. Así que se lo pedi en papel y llegamos a un acuerdo de intercambio.
Sin embargo, esta reseña no va de eso, sino de lo que decia al principio: Si alguien puede hablar de redención, de libertad, y de cojones para gritarle el asco al mundo es ella. Vale la pena. Recomiendo este libro. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

About the Author
Almena L. Mayes is an associate minister at Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton, N.C. She is currently serving under watch care at the Dream Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Paterson N.J and raised in Warrenton, NC she sees herself as a city girl living a country girl’s life. She is the mother of three beautiful adults and has three wonderful grandchildren. Mena, as she is called by friends and family, attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where she studied Communications and Guilford College where she earned a degree in English with a concentration in writing. In addition to writing, Mena is a singer and songwriter. She truly believes that God’s message may be packaged differently for different people but the message is always the same; He saves, He heals and he restores. Practical application of spiritual principles is Mena’s mission in life. “If we can’t make the message relevant then people will not embrace it.” She feels a responsibility to present the message of God’s never ending love to all people in a judgement free zone. “We all have issues, we all have problems but by being transparent to ourselves and to God we can grow beyond them.”
