Fantastic book!!

I loved her early life and the fun she enjoyed that spilled over into all her other adventures. Anne was the best friend that a girl could have. I know because I was Crazy Barb.

Required reading for the Recovering Catholic

What a fantastic look back to a world that is almost out of reach to us now--before texting, sexting and the Kardashian's plastic brand of sexy that would have made the Mothers keel over for sure! Every woman (and man) should consciously read this jewel and pass it on to her daughter, granddaughter or grand niece or her hairstylist before this perspective of a woman's finding herself (before that phrase even existed) is lost in SPAM. Love this Anne! Congrats!

Wry reflection of a survivor

This memoir reads like the author is telling her story to a good friend over a cup of tea. The detail in her descriptions take the reader back in time with vivid clarity. I felt her loneliness and despair in the convent. Best of all, Anne demonstrates the wisdom and perspective of a well-lived life to help her reconcile her family's dysfunction. This book is a fun read for anyone, but would ring especially true for Baby Boomer lapsed Catholics.

Loosing Murphy is a wonderfully written book

Loosing Murphy is a wonderfully written book. Whilst the sentiment of this book is itself a homage and celebration of a beautifully strong, relationship lost (something we all unfortunately experience), it is instead intelligently conveyed through a conduit. The strong emotions of events experienced, transposed, but equally displayed into an exciting story of equal sentiment. The vibrant use of words sparks the imagination and I strongly recommend you give this wonderful book a go. You will not be disappointed.

A story of loss

This was a moving and emotional story of a man who lost his closest companion. The connection between the writer and his dog was so strong as to be unexplainable. It seemed as though from the moment the two first met, there was something special between the two of them. Something more precious than any earthly, physical possession could ever generate. It only added to their bond that Murphy was the writer's only childhood entertainment and close friend.

However, this is the story of not just a life spent with Murphy, but of the death the writer inevitably had to deal with. Murphy's death came at such a pivotal moment in the writer's life. It was sudden and unexpected. As with most people who will read this book, the author has lost many friends and family in addition to Murphy, but none even came close to the same feeling of loss. It is clear that the writer struggled through the writing of this book. The emotion, pain, and bitterness is so clear in every word the author has written. It is truly raw emotion. But he draws to the conclusion he's had trouble facing for so long - that he has to let go of Murphy.

This book isn't just a collection of memories - it's a remembrance and celebration. It has certainly touched me in regards to pets I have loss. It came across to me as a call to not take for granted the time I have left with close family and friends.

This is heart-warming story of love and friendship between a young boy and his beloved dog, Jack/Murphy. The story shows that every day is truly an adventure if you have your beloved companion by your side. The author did a great job in introducing a one-of-a-kind friendship between a child and his pet. It will surely bring back your childhood memories of happiness and adventure, as well as your first heartbreak because of a sudden loss. This book is a must have for every pet lover. Very inspiring! Highly recommended!

About the Author
Theodore Roosevelt was an American politician, naturalist, military man, author, and the youngest president of the United States. Known for his larger-than-life persona, Roosevelt is credited with forming the Rough Riders, trust-busting large American companies including Standard Oil, expanding the system of national parks and forests, and negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese War, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

A prolific author, Roosevelt s topics ranged from foreign policy to the natural world to personal memoirs. Among his most recognized works are The Rough Riders, The Winning of the West, and his Autobiography. In addition to a legacy of written works, Roosevelt is immortalized along with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln on Mount Rushmore, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honour by President Bill Clinton for his charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War, and was given the title of Chief Scout Citizen by the Boy Scouts of America. Roosevelt died suddenly at his home, Sagamore Hill, on January 5, 1919. Roosevelt, along with his niece Eleanor and his cousin Franklin D., is the subject of the 2014 Ken Burns documentary The Roosevelts: An Intimate History.

Conflicted: Biography or Essay?

The book could have just as well been categorized as an extended essay - in the best sense of that description - a piece of writing from an author's personal point of view. T.R. is, as usual, adamant in his opinion, often presented bombastically as fact rather than perspective. No doubt he is right more often than wrong, but unfortunately the reader is never sure where biography ends and essay begins. There are no citations, no included correspondence, no referenced schools of thought... only T.R.'s indomitable opinion, which frequently lapses into a sermonizing form as it does, though more forgivably, in his own autobiography Theodore Roosevelt: An Autobiography.

We do learn much of Gouverneur Morris and his remarkable life, though the author ignores an opportunity for a more detailed analysis of Morris' enormous contribution to the Constitutional Convention which would have required far more of the scholarly arts than found in an essay! Morris' life in Paris during "The Terror" of the French Revolution is well presented as harrowing and heroic. And despite T.R.'s evident love of his subject, the author breaks free of his infatuation long enough to excoriate Morris for his contemptible behavior as leader of a secessionist movement during the War of 1812. (See James M. Banner's book, To the Hartford Convention: the Federalists and the origins of party politics in Massachusetts, 1789-1815 for more on that topic). It is an easy read, "between the lines" to see Morris as a haughty aristocrat, contemptuous of the intellectual capabilities of the "common man", even though T.R. struggles (in vain) to caution his readers that this was NOT the case.

Much of T.R.'s opinion and perspective can come off in the 21st century as bluster, or oddly dated - (20th century macho has morphed into 21st century buffoonery). A brief example: (pg. 261) "The king who could suffer with firmness, and who could act either not at all, or else with the worst possible effect, had the head and heart that might of suited the monkish idea of a female saint...". Why pass along the "monkish" gender disdain? And, with remarkably unreasoned bluster, T.R. writes of our Revolutionary War experience (pg. 49) "We did not owe our main disasters to the might of our foes, nor our final triumph to the help of our friends." Thus at Yorktown, eight-thousand French soldiers under Rochambeau, a French naval fleet under de Grasse of AT LEAST 28 'Ships of the Line', totaling 2,078 guns and 18,138 crew members, a fleet carrying a half-million in Spanish silver to pay unpaid American troops, all blithely ignored and dismissed by our essayist!

Nonetheless- the book is a worthwhile read and recommended, but as much for its unintended "autobiography" of the writer as for its essay of his subject. Still-- exuberance and self-assurance do make for a better told story than the dry simplicity of a recitation of facts gathered through laborious research. But, the right combination of those two styles is what can make history come alive and unfortunately this book misses that mix; the historian's expected rigor and depth does not show. See, professor William Howard Adams' book, Gouverneur Morris: An Independent Life for a much better biography of Morris. This book merits only three stars as as a biography despite the eminence of the author, perhaps more stars as essay?

Text is generally well done; there are no typos, or awkward page breaks, or line feeds, etc that can be an annoying artifact of the "remastering" to digital process. Oddly, however, the book did NOT recognize the dictionary, so there is no look-up. The dictionaries are particularly missed as a translator for T.R.'s flamboyantly "dropped" French phrases. Page numbers are shown with selection of the menu and toolbar display (tap top of kindle-page). e-Book publication quality, ★★★☆☆

Love the book, but choose something other than the Pavilion Press edition.

Gouverneur Morris This is a great essay by Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote in a breezy, fast-moving style. I have given it to several people, who have all enjoyed it.

A word of warning, though: I recently bought the Pavilion Press edition, which I can't recommend. The binding is dreadful, you can't open the book and the binding broke right away. A basically unreadable edition -- not sure why they bother to publish it.

A story we can all relate to.....

I found Henning’s Story a very entertaining read. Even though this is one man’s memoirs, it is really a story that all of us that lived through 1979 to 1999 can relate to. Not only does it cover the author’s individual trials and successes (told rather bravely, I will add), it also covers world events and films over that period that influenced and affected Henning. I loved the way each chapter covered a calendar year and I found myself looking forward to each chapter trying to remember the events and films that affected me before I commenced reading. It is not just a record of events, but it reflects on how past events can influence oneself in the future, whether or not you felt affected at the time. It certainly made me think about it. This book is a very entertaining read and I can’t wait to read the next twenty years!

Good read!

I always enjoy reading about serial killers. From my readings it seems that there are many different types of killers and just as many reasons why they do it. When I got interested in serial killers, I think I thought I could figure them out. Maybe see some sort of common thread. But as this book highlights all of them are different for the most part.

For some reason, I love true crime books. Sometimes Amazon gives these away for free. I had never heard of the witch killers before, so i HAD to read it. Insane. The books themselves are informative and interesting, but often poorly written, with bad grammar, typos, etc. This is my only reason for a lower star rating.

The only way to really understand what made T.R. tick.

Outstanding! This book is a tome of philosophy, adventure, intrigue, and above all, inspiration. Notwithstanding these encomia however, the reader should beware before making a hegira into its noble pages that this autobiography does not follow the traditional structure of a "biography." Rather it can be described as being a compendium of T.R.'s philosophy on life. The true strength of its pages being found in how T.R.'s experiences and actions staunchly uphold and support his 'vigor of life' and probity which he so often addressed as being fundamental to all good Americans. Accordingly, I suggest a first-time reader of T.R. would be best served by initially reading a more "objective" biography of T.R. (I suggest Nathan Miller's Theodore Roosevelt, A Life) in order to become familiar with the events and time frames involved. This will allow the reader to more appreciate the nature, values and beliefs of the great man as told in this book by the ultimate authority, himself.
Along with being completely inspired by a man of such high moral values, the factual anecdotes related in this book comfort you in the knowledge that this hero practiced what he preached. In a speech by his own hand, T.R. embodied his own life; "The credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood;...who strives valiantly...who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who have never known neither victory nor defeat."
T.R. was a naturalist, legislator, cowboy, businessman, soldier, author, conservationist, U.S. President, world explorer, and above all an inspirational "doer of deeds." This book eloquently tells the reader why he felt he needed to perform these deeds and what was going through his mind all the while.

A Great Chronicler of His Own Life and Times

Having read several books about TR, I have heard a lot about his writing. Other than reading some of his letters and quotes in books, I had never read any of his work but picked his autobiography up from a used bookstore. I was looking for the Naval War of 1812, but ended up with this instead. I was not disappointed. Some parts of the book definitely dragged and if your patience for legislative maneuvering prior to 1900 in the New York legislature is limited, you might want to skip to the back half of the book. But what comes through in the book are TR's passions: books, the outdoors, conserving the outdoors, and the Navy.

The first half of the book is essentially told chronologically. But when TR gets to his presidency, he tells the tale thematically. There are chapters on conservation, trust busting and other industrial issues, and two chapters on international affairs. Unfortunately, the book ends with his presidency and does not go into TR's world travels or his comeback bid in 1912. TR's dislike for his hand picked successor, President Taft, permeates the presidency chapters.

As with any autobiography, especially a presidential one, TR views himself as always right and his opponents as always wrong. His views on Taft are a good example of that. But that can hardly be viewed as a failing of the book, since that is a standard characteristic of these types of books.

If you want a first hand view of the man in the arena, what he tried to do and how he tried to lead his life, read the book.

A RIVETING READ FROM START TO FINISH

“Voices in my Head” by Beth Heywood.
Please note: there are a few ‘spoilers’ in my review.
This is not my usual type of read – a non-fiction book - which means it’s scarily TRUE! How can one person endure so much emotional, mental, spiritual and physical abuse? This also includes ‘bullying at home, school and in the workplace’. And for her to survive with her life and sense of time and place relatively intact and to still be living with the hope of ’things getting better’ is a major miracle. Somehow Beth Heywood has achieved this and is, without question, a remarkable woman. Her strength of character is deep in her core; at the very epicentre of her soul. As I was reading, the vivid reality of her situation was playing like a movie in my head! Seriously – and I hope the author has the movie rights tied up? Her upbringing was what I can only describe as ‘abusive’ on so many levels it is no wonder she descended into periods of ‘madness’ which the author quite candidly states herself in detail. Her Victorian Catholic upbringing, coupled with her early marriage to a man, who sadly had his own issues including a serious gambling and sex addiction (which she knew nothing of until months/years into their marriage; he was Mr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for sure – during their courtship he’d been affable, affectionate & happy) and she’d fallen for him (because she was wearing ‘rose tinted spectacles’ and later thought ‘this was her lot’ and she just had to accept it). Her unconsummated and sexless first marriage left her theoretically ‘a virgin’ for all of the 8 years that it lasted. And in her desperation during that time inventiveness took over, as she tried all manner of ideas to entice her husband to her, in the hopes of conceiving (she had twin sons via artificial insemination – the DIY kind). From the moment of their birth the lads were her greatest joy and her reason to live and keep things together in those early days. Her need for a close loving family is palpable. This is a story of one woman’s deep despair and her triumphs over the odds. It is also the story of the small kindnesses, the special friendships and love shown to her along the way. And to the author several of those friendships are now International and remain as important today as when they began. This is a book that you will read in one or two sittings. It is a book that will make you very grateful for the life you have. Or it will make you want to get out of the crappy ‘life-lie’ you find yourself currently living in, too. And it is a book that will give you a greater empathy and understanding for anyone with a ‘labelled mental disorder’. The author’s early naiveté and diagnosed bi-polar has lead her on the journey of a lifetime. ‘All of it’ has obviously made her the unique person she is today. And to have the courage to write it down has taken a huge amount of fortitude and guts along with sheer determination. As one previous reviewer has stated there are some editorial glitches – but when you realise where this story has come from you overlook and forgive and have utter compassion. Thank you for sharing ‘your life story thus far’ Beth Heywood. I eagerly await the movie!

I was riveted - from cover to cover.

‘Voices in my Head’ by Beth Heywood.
Most of us would never encounter a tenth of the stress that crafted Beth Heywood into the incredibly strong and endearingly real person who has dared to bring us this story of her life.
I cannot imagine the fortitude required to confront so many horrific ‘ghosts from the past’.
But not only does Heywood confront them in ‘Voices in my Head’, she documents them, strips them bare of all pretense in a story-telling style both simple and riveting. She spares nothing and no one, not even herself.
Unable to put it down, I read from cover to cover in one sitting.
If you read this as a work of fiction you could settle comfortably into your pillows afterwards and sleep happily knowing so much horror could never happen to one person in one lifetime.
But this is not fiction.
It is a factual account of one person’s life; one person’s mental and emotional struggle against religious bigotry and the kind of cruelty and abuse that would come loosely under the term ‘bullying’ on many levels. This is one person’s account that shows quite graphically the effect of such stress on the psyche.
It is also a treatise on hope and love, being a testament to the fortitude of the human mind, the human heart and the friends Heywood found on her journey to the doors of Bedlam and back, who reached out – restoring our belief in humankind after all.
If you live or work with someone who has bipolar disorder you can gain no better insight into what that might actually mean, than by reading ‘Voices in my Head’.
There are a couple of minor formatting glitches in the book but you won’t even notice them as Heywood grabs you by the scruff of your psyche and drags you, willy-nilly, through the torturous labyrinth of hers.

CAPTIVATING... you won't put this down until the very end!

Lizzie thank you so much for sharing your amazingly courageous and absolutely powerful womanhood with me, with us. Your held me from the very beginning and its emotion tore at my heart. I felt your strength and inner beauty as you powered through very exhausting and terrifying times.

It kept me captivated until the end when I sighed with relief and knowledge that I already knew that all was well for you now, but I lived through you at the time and heard you speaking as I read on. I fell in love with your boys and then Errol – and the lovely friends that supported you in dire and difficult times. What a journey you have had.

Isn’t it amazing how some books just take us to places we’d forgotten, feared or never experienced – I often needed to get up and go out to the garden, then headed back in wanting to know, what next, and had to remind myself that, it’s okay Lizzie is with Errol safe in her homeland and all is well. So yes tears Lizzie – this book I am sure will one day be a film that others too can learn from. That is my wish for you, and for the world, as it holds a power unique to few books I have read, that speaks to so many of us as it reflects back parts of our own life and brings understanding, healing.

As the Pyrates in the West-Indies have been so formidable and numerous, that they have interrupted the Trade of Europe into those Parts; and our English Merchants, in particular, have suffered more by their Depredations, than by the united Force of France and Spain, in the late War: We do not doubt but the World will be curious to know the Original and Progress of these Desperadoes, who were the Terror of the trading Part of the World.

But before we enter upon their particular History, it will not be amiss, by way of Introduction, to shew, by some Examples drawn from History, the great Mischief and Danger which threaten Kingdoms and Commonwealths, from the Increase of these sort of Robbers; when either by the Troubles of particular Times, or the Neglect of Governments, they are not crush’d before they gather Strength.

It has been the Case heretofore, that when a single Pyrate has been suffered to range the Seas, as not being worth the Notice of a Government, he has by Degrees grown so powerful, as to put them to the Expence of a great deal of Blood and Treasure, before he was suppress’d. We shall not examine how it came to pass, that our Pyrates in the West-Indies have continually increased till of late; this is an Enquiry which belongs to the Legislature, or Representatives of the People in Parliament, and to them we shall leave it.

Our Business shall be briefly to shew, what from Beginnings, as inconsiderable as these, other Nations have suffered.

I have read this book twice now. I was playong AC Black Flag when I found out the charactwrs were real peiple and this book was real. If you dig pirates, youll dig this book. A little tricky with vernacular time period words, but you can figure it out.

Really interesting and informative read,

This is a really great book as it contains a history of many of the most famous pirates, but what really makes it special is that it draws heavily from primary sources. While the fact that it was written almost 300 years ago does have some drawbacks (very long descriptive pages of what is for us in the age of readily available general knowledge, irrelevant information), it is surprisingly populist compared to contemporary historical works. The book was both informative and captivating (especially Blackbeard's final battle and some of the escapades of Roberts).

Great reading for understanding the world we now live in and how we got here

China's economic and political influence has grown immensely over the last decade. Yet, most westerners know very little about China and how it came to such a role of prominence. More importantly, westerners never really get to understand the people of China in any meaningful way. This book gave me a glimpse into China's people, its recent past and the roots of its current success. It is a very unique view of a fascinating people and their culture. The author obviously has a great love of China and the people that make it so great.
