Great book.
By Thomas Panholzer
Michael W. Steed delivers a compassionate book describing criminal cases where his sketches often influenced trial outcomes and apprehension of suspects. Steed grew up in a police culture, which affected his torn desire to be either a police officer or an artist. He fell into the opportunity to combine the two and has become a nationally noted police sketch artist. He coined the phrase SketchCop and has successfully developed his own nationally used computer software to aid in sketching suspects. That being said the book’s strength for this reviewer lies in three areas: 1. the tracing of the field’s historical development from just calling in a local artist to developing respected divisions staffed with trained police artists, 2. the description of the two major methods to develop suspect sketches, and 3. how he has personally worked with witnesses, notably children, to successfully develop sketches leading to the apprehension of violent criminals. Perhaps the uniqueness of this book lies in the author’s admission of the failures encountered. As this reviewer moved from chapter to chapter, he found the author’s deep seated compulsion to assist police and victims at any time of the day to be perhaps due to his seeking penitence for a failed case very early in his sketch-artist career. In that case, found in chapter three, the wrong man was convicted and served twenty years for a crime he had not committed. This conviction arose partly because of the author’s sketch. As the chapters continue, I could not help but see the evolution of a police officer who really wanted to help victims and police get the right guy. The author earns this reviewer's respect as throughout the remainder of the book he strongly emphasizes the importance of interviewing witnesses without leading questions and the need to trust the ability of children to present an accurate description. He further states without hesitation that no one should be sentenced to die based solely on a police sketch. The book’s strongest appeal to this reviewer lies in the author’s description of how he develops his sketches, thus, SketchCop should appeal to writers of police drama, whether true or fiction. It should also appeal to defense attorneys, police officers, other sketch artists, and the general public because the author does tell some darn good stories. I cannot rate the book five stars, however, for the book has a number of grammatical errors including wrong word usage, improper pronoun-antecedent agreement, skipped words, inconsistent use of dashes, mixing up second and third person pronouns, and a few other things, but this is the English teacher in me, and under no circumstances will they stop a reader from thoroughly enjoying the book.

Well-written and interesting true-crime book
By Tina Wiley-Stringer
I have always enjoyed true crime books. This was my first time to read a book by this author and I was very pleased with his writing. Michael Streed takes the reader into his world as a "sketch cop", but he brings his stories down to a level where outsiders can understand and relate to his profession. So many times professionals have done something for so long that they tend to "talk above" the general public about their profession or passion. Mr. Streed manages to avoid this as he effortlessly brings the reader into his world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in true crime or other related subjects.

Very educational....
By JoAnn Brown
Sketchcop:

Excellent book!

This book is very well written. I have read a lot of true crime books, where most emphasize on the facts, profiling and why they commit the crime.. This one takes a different approach.

I always felt empathy for the victims in other books, are appalled at what was done and have been even scared at times...

I learned a lot about how people were found, whether they were a victim or had committed a crime.

It was very interesting to learn a different approach to law enforcement. Not only how it is done but the history behind sketching.

I was amazed at the sketch aspic of law enforcement. I really didn't realize how personal it could be, or how detailed the methods are to achieve a sketch!

Not only did the book cover the facts, it made you feel the emotion of the stories, some of the stories even had humor, the author gave any honest picture of law enforcement as he lived it.

I've got a whole new respect for individuals who choose a career in law!

Awesome!
