It is naturally for most of us, especially for young people, to have a role model. Someone wants to be as clever as Albert Einstein, other – as handsome as Jean-Paul Belmondo, or as rich as Bill Gates. So the author giving us knowledge about lives of special persons, who deserve to be a role model, makes a nice thing. The main part of this box set consists of two books by Steve Gold about interesting and really SPECIAL man – Elon Musk. It is possible to say this is he who moves forward modern technologies of electric car and spaceship building. The first book tells the biography of Elon Musk, the second describes principles that are fundamental in his business and life, and can be an example for others. I’ve read these books with great interest and was inspired! But there is one more book as a gift in this box set! It is about simple steps on how to improve your connections with other people and create a great impression. Unfortunately, I see a weakness in the box set: too much advertising.

The man who contributed history of the future.A very great informative book...

This is an amazingly detailed book about Elon. I had consumed about every other resource out there, and there was just so much new information here. It does get a little into the weeds, but Steve Gold does an excellent job distilling and getting to the essence of the man.The book felt like an authentic discovery of who Musk was, is and strives to be. Clearly a challenge to write on such a person of magnitude in his fields as well as in the media; it appears a fair balance between idolizing and condemning Elon was reached. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and think that regardless of how you feel about Musk, it's an opportunity to gain a broader picture beyond media filtered portrayals.The more you read about Elon Musk the more you believe he came from another world. Anything is possible and your dreams could be attained with hard work and sacrifice.

Southern "Thin Man" a Joy to Read

What happens when Nick Charles drops his martini, pours himself a glass of Cotes de Rhone and starts studying Zen? He becomes Flap Tucker, one of the most engaging detectives it has been my pleasure to find. Replacing urbane zingers with southern-fried wit, in this 5th of the delightful series, Flap learns as much about his galpal Dalliance as about a murder-by-body-parts. Disembodied hands, great "perps" like Jersey Jakes, and past lives keep you from putting this book down except to refill your wineglass.
I've loved all this series and this was one of the best. Dalliance still walks into a bar like she was on ball bearings and Flap...well...he still manages to make detecting look Zen-Easy. Pick up a great bottle of red, buy this book, and turn your phone off. It won't disappoint.

Phillip De Poy brings Flap Tucker back with a complex plot and entertaining characterization. Flap is stuck between a rock and hard place as many signs point to Dalliance (his love interest) as being intimately involved in murder. As Flap discovers more about Dally's 'past lives' he becomes more troubled. The locale (Atlanta, Georgia) is brought alive as Flap tries to make sense of the nonsensical.
Great characterization and plot creation. The best Flap Tucker yet. Don't miss it!

A droll Zen mystery-fun read

At four in the morning, Atlanta's Easy nightclub owner Dalliance Oglethorpe calls her on-and-off lover Flap Tucker to rush over immediately. One of his three rules of life is to come when Dally calls. He quickly arrives and takes a strange looking package from Dally. Flap opens it to see a severed hand with a note about this being the first installment. A stunned Dally tells Flap it means nothing and to stay out of it.

Instead of having Flap, a renowned investigator, make inquiries, Dally hires Jersey Jakes, a risky proposition to say the least. Meanwhile, an obnoxious patron harangues Dally at her club. Unable to stay away or leave as he has done numerous times when the commitment level seemed imminent, Flap begins his own investigation, which takes him to their mutual hometown of Invisible, Georgia in the southern side of the state. He begins to piece together her years when he fled her for the safety of the Army, not quite understanding the danger of the final installment.

The Flap Tucker novels are becoming recognized as great stories with the latest entry bound to be considered one of the best regional mysteries of the year. Flap remains a zany Zen master filled with intelligence, humor, but also frustration this time. Dally shows the cracks in her past. The introduction of a teenage girl who appears to be a perfect intern for Flap augments the tale by further humanizing the hero. Phillip DePoy makes reading so EASY to enjoy that fans that devour DEAD EASY will seek the earlier works of a superb author.

About the Author

Critic, translator, and poet, Agnes Whitfield has published extensively in and on literary translation and Quebec literature. President of the Canadian Association for Translation Studies from 1995 to 1999, Seagram Visiting Chair at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada from 2003 to 2004, she is former director of and currently teaches at the School of Translation at York University in Toronto.

Not Completely Between the Lines

A translation should preserve the source culture and linguistic style; a translation should be able to stand on its own as a work in the target language; a translator should be accurate and faithful; a translator should have freedom - the twelve translators profiled in Writing Between the Lines have a wide variety of opinions about their roles and the requirements of their jobs. It is interesting to read the in-depth biographies of these translators and to learn how they came to translation, how they viewed their work, and how their other careers - as professors, writers (poets, novelists, academics, journalists, and one pornographer), a lawyer, one mailman/mayor, and so forth - influenced their callings as translators. The overarching goal of this book, however, is not simply to analyze individual translators and their feelings about translation, but to, through these portraits, describe the modern history of translation in Canada. Unfortunately, it takes a limited approach to this. Writing Between the Lines repeatedly emphasizes the importance of communication and literary exchange, including translation, between Canada's anglophone and francophone communities, and the book rightfully claims that such exchange is only to the benefit of the bilingual country. And yet, the book only features anglophone translators; that is, each of the twelve men and women portrayed translates from French to English. Perhaps a companion volume on francophone translators is planned, or maybe for whatever reason the editor believed it best to only look at one side of the language divide at this time. But to truly represent the area "between the lines," francophone translators should be included.

In summary, Writing Between the Lines is a good book to read for those who are interested in learning about individual translators and their experiences, as well as about one-half of the modern history of translation in Canada. As the introduction states, this is the "first comprehensive, inside view of the practice of anglophone literary translation in Canada," and it is a useful and noteworthy work on those grounds. For a fuller picture, though, a "comprehensive, inside view" of francophone translation in Canada is also needed.

Wonderful book Beverlye! Every review prior to this one already said what I would then have to repeat. You are a miracle woman, your looks defying age, your body defying cancer, the big gray monster fear. But most of all it is your inner spirit, your love for others, your warmth and indefatigable personality which illuminates your writing and puts you into a special category of women who are conquering life. You see the agelessness in stones which transform into art in your photography, you love and are loved, you are positive and joyful and your zest of life lets you dance and age in high heels. Bravo Beverlye, keep it up and keep being such an inspiration.

About the Author
Raegyn S. Newman was born and raised in a rural town of Mississippi. After graduating high school, Raegyn and her family relocated to Michigan where she attended Southwestern Michigan College and Western Michigan University. It was during her years at Southwestern Michigan College that Raegyn decided it was time to heal from the effects of sexual abuse that occurred during her adolescent and teenage years. Determined to not allow her past hinder her future and that of her young daughter, Raegyn set out to end the generational curses that she believed plagued her family. Raegyn began her healing journey by developing a deeper relationship with God and attending counseling sessions regularly. Understanding that the healing journey wasn't just about her, Raegyn became an inspiration to young girls and women, mentoring for many years at the local YWCA in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was here that she recognized her love for helping others become their best self. Raegyn and her family currently reside in Chesapeake, Virginia where she's studying to earn a Life Coaching certification and working on her new novel. In her spare time, Raegyn enjoys quality time with her family and friends, speaking at women's conferences, reading, and writing.

Peeping into the soul of a man

This one is a very good translation, especially for the modern reader. It conveys the immediacy and vividness of a text written more than 1500 years ago. One feels almost as a voyeur peeping into the private confession of a man to his God. The honesty and unembarrassed disclosure of his sins, and fruitless search for worldly wisdom, is something we can personally identify with, even today. It is amazing how vivid the description of life in late 4th century is in this Confessions. What a wonderful way to approach History, places like Carthage, Rome or Milan, thru the eyes of a skilled and intelligent man who pours his heart on these pages for us to benefit from.

St. Augustine's life, however distant in time, is filled with events, desires, and troubles, as common today as in the year 400. We can identify fully with him, and in his longing and weakness we can see our own soul portrayed. He talks about his childhood, his family, his studies and his lifelong pursuit of wisdom and truth, specially since the age of 19. We get immersed in the daily life of people in the 4th Century under the Roman Empire, their daily worries, their intellectual debates, their religious confrontations. We see the social conditions of all classes of people, from the wealthy and idle to the slaves who fight in the Circus. We see people living, talking, traveling, dreaming, and going about their business as if we were present with them. No wonder this book is an authentic classic, one that I should have read long ago.

There are many reasons to read this book. Those interested in History are certainly going to find plenty of information from eye-witness perspective; those who like to read personal memories and autobiographies won't have it easy to find a better one. For those interested in the history of religion and Catholicism, this is a must, a landmark in Christian literature. Whatever you are looking for, this book is certainly one that will satisfy your intellectual curiosity as well as fill you spiritually.

One thing to bear in mind is that the Confessions are not addressed to us, readers, that is why certain things about the author's behavior seem inexplicable: certain things that would seem to us to merit more explaining, being only mentioned briefly (his behavior toward the woman he had a child with, for example), while other issues are given a lot more space. Of course the Lord knew his heart well, but still, one is intrigued at this man.

Uplifting

St. Augustine is one of the greatest thinkers the West ever produced. Born in North Africa in the waning years of the Roman Empire, his Confessions detail his ultimate conversion to Nicene Christianity after a ten year journey through the various trendy sects of the 4th century C.E. Augustine was a member of the Manichean heresy, a follower of Astrology, and an all around sinner. He enjoyed the barbaric games of the coliseum, was overly proud of his education and teaching positions, and just couldn't bring himself to give up the ladies. He even had a son, Adeodatus, who was born out of wedlock. In short, Augustine loved the things that most people love, and he loved the same things that we love in our decadent age. This is what makes this book so relevant today; it shows how little the human race has come in 1500 years. Augustine's struggles are our struggles.
Two points of interest are worth mentioning here. The first is Augustine's mother, St. Monica. Throughout the book, Monica is an omnipresent figure in Augustine's life. She is a tireless Christian, and she does many things to try and bring Augustine into the faith. She prays incessantly, has visions and dreams from God that promise Augustine's conversion, and she follows her son everywhere he goes. Augustine gives much praise to his mother, but it's important to remember that he was writing this account after his conversion. At the time, Augustine must have been sick to death of some of her antics. He actually lied to her so he could sneak off to Rome without her, although she was soon on a boat so she could catch up with him. I also felt sorry for his father, Patricius. Dad wasn't really into the Christian thing, so Monica put on the pants in the family. Augustine even says that Monica made God the 'true' father in their house.
A second point of interest is Augustine's actual conversion. He seems to go through two of them in quick succession. The first is an intellectual conversion, as Augustine uses the texts of Neo-Platonic authors to prove to himself the fallacy of the Manichean theology. It seems the Manicheans believed in a Christ figure that was not fully divine, as well as the idea that God was a substance. Augustine shows how substance can be corrupted, making this idea totally incompatible with the idea of a perfect God. After all, if a substance can be corrupted, how can it be perfect? After the intellectual conversion, Augustine still can't totally believe because he can't give up the fleshly sin of lust with women. This second conversion finally comes about in the famous 'pick it up and read' incident in the garden. Augustine, wracked by his sins and on the verge of some type of mental collapse over his anguish, hears a child's voice singing, 'Pick it up and read.' Seeing this as a sign from God, he picks up Paul's Epistles and reads the first thing he sees in the book. He reads a passage about the evils of fleshly vice and his conversion is complete.
After this conversion, the rest of the book veers off on a tangent. Augustine examines the concept of time, in great detail, and writes an incredibly dense exegesis on the first parts of the book of Genesis. This section, with the exception of his discourse on time, isn't nearly as interesting as the account of his life and the fundamental changes he goes through as he tries to find the true way to live life. I do suspect that thousands have converted after reading this book because it speaks to every human on a fundamental level. The above description I've given doesn't even begin to cover the amount of information in this book. The Confessions is both beautiful and thought provoking and I would recommend it to anyone.
I do have a word of warning for those who are considering giving this one a shot. Avoid, like the plague, the John Ryan translation. It is wordy, dense, and not at all clear. Read this Penguin version, written by Mr. Pine-Coffin (great name, huh?). It is a clear and concise translation. It's one thing to struggle with ideas in a book, but why should we have to struggle with the syntax? Go forth and read, young man!

Only an abridgement

Like the Carolinne White translation of the "Confessions," also carried by Amazon, this paperback does not have the complete original text. Rather, some of the ideas have been selected out by someone and are here rephrased into more contemporary language. That's OK, but anyone buying this book ought to know that this version is an abridgement and not the full text of the "Confessions" that they're buying.

About the Author
John Woolman (1720-1772) was a North American merchant, tailor, journalist and itinerant Quaker preacher, and an early abolitionist in the colonial era. Based in Mount Holly, New Jersey, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he traveled through frontier areas of British North America to preach Quaker beliefs, and advocate against slavery and the slave trade, cruelty to animals, economic injustices and oppression, and conscription; from 1755 during the French and Indian War, he urged tax resistance to deny support to the military. In 1772, Woolman traveled to England, where he urged Quakers to support abolition of slavery. Woolman published numerous essays, especially against slavery. He kept a journal throughout his life; it was published posthumously, entitled The Journal of John Woolman (1774). Included in Volume I of the Harvard Classics since 1909, it is considered a prominent American spiritual work. The Journal has been continuously in print since 1774, published in numerous editions; the most recent scholarly edition was published in 1989.
