Webster’s edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to "difficult, yet commonly used" words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in Spanish, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English, and avoid them using the notes as a pure translation crutch. "Looking blankly into the void of death"

Nearing the age of seventy, when "the mind wakes to find itself looking blankly into the void of death," Adams wrote for his closest friends his version of the earth-shattering events they had experienced. He had 100 copies printed in luxurious editions and, in early 1907, sent them to such dignitaries as Theodore Roosevelt, William and Henry James, Charles Gaskell, and Henry Cabot Lodge. This private account was not released commercially until after Adams's death, in 1918, when it became a best-seller and won the Pulitzer Prize.

Many scholars and critics, as well as Adams himself, view "The Education of Henry Adams" as a sequel to his earlier book, "Mont Sant Michel and Chartres" (also privately printed). Indeed, the posthumous edition of the later work opens with an Editor's Preface (signed by Lodge, but presumptuously written by Adams himself) in which the author proposes subtitles for each volume: respectively, "A Study of Twentieth-Century Multiplicity" and "A Study of Thirteenth-Century Unity." While the two works are certainly linked thematically, they are not companion works in the traditional sense: "Mont Sant Michel" is a personal examination of medieval institutional and cultural history, while the "Education" is Adams's reckoning of his own involvement in international diplomatic affairs and intellectual circles. In other words, one can safely and profitably read one book without reading the other.

So what is this difficult-to-categorize book about? Reduced to its simplest level, it recounts how an "eighteenth-century American boy" grew up during the nineteenth century, only to be intimidated and awed by the chaos of the twentieth. The unity of earlier ages, when everything revolved around God and Church, had been exploded into limitless possibilities by the discoveries of science and the advent of democracy, and Adams realized that "the child born in 1900 would then be born into a new world which would be not a unity but a multiple."

This somewhat obvious yet essential theme aside, the joy of this book for many readers is Adams's sardonic wit and his penchant for aphorisms; the number of quotable quotes is both delightful and exhausting. A notorious name-dropper, he knows everyone, and offers an insider's account of the most important events of the nineteenth century, volunteering his views on international diplomacy, monetary policy, evolutionary biology, and other matters.

Adams portrays the journey of his life as an ongoing attempt at educating himself, yet he disdainfully learned that formal education was useless and that his dabbling had brought him to a dead end. "Religion, politics, statistics, travel had thus far led to nothing.... Accidental education could go no further, for one's mind was already littered and stuffed beyond hope with the millions of chance images stored away without order in the memory. One might as well try to educate a gravel-pit."

Of course, Adams's self-effacing protests of ignorance are often little more than a pose. His sense of innate blueblood superiority can be grating--a stance exaggerated by his writing about himself in the third person. He repeatedly (and backhandedly) reminds the reader how, as stupid as he might be, he is in good company: "Adams knew only that he would have felt himself on a more equal footing with them had he been less ignorant." "Lincoln, Seward, Sumner, and the rest, could give no help to the young man seeking education; they knew less than he." "Ridiculous as he knew himself about to be in his new role, he was less ridiculous than his betters." One of the most unintentionally satisfying sections of this book, then, is when Adams finds himself among true aristocrats in England--and they dismiss him as a social inferior.

As even Adams's biographer Ernest Samuels and Adams specialist John Carlos Rowe both acknowledge, the "Education" is an extraordinarily challenging work. Writing for his friends, Adams assumed a familiarity with arcane historical details about such affairs as American-Confederate-British diplomatic machinations during the Civil War, the Gold Scandal of 1869, and John Hay's role in developing China's Open Door Policy. Even the annotations provided by standard commercial editions may not be enough for many readers to flesh out what Adams is talking about.

If there ever was a book that requires a study aid, this is it. Assuming you can overcome the common predisposition against such guides, you will discover that CliffNotes provides, in a useful narrative form, the necessary historical and biographical background--although it is certainly no substitute for the wit and wisdom of the work itself. And, for those who finish reading the book and want to fill in the gaps, the more scholarly "New Essays on The Education of Henry Adams" (edited by Rowe) offers additional valuable insights with a minimum of jargon.

Stupid Teachers.....show some respect to Mr. Adams

I can only laugh, to hear the reports of students being required to read Adams. If there is one thing I am certain, it is that Adams would not appreciate being assigned. "The Education" is intended for those real students whose *desire* is learning. I put special emphasis on *desire*, not for the sake of being pompous, but to distinguish this type of desire as being self-motivated. Adams "Education" is a tremendous rebuttal to the ordinary, institutionalized education. There is little doubt as to the socio-economic benefits and sensibilities of formal education, but one should also recognize its inherent limitations. People seldom enjoy what they are forced to do! Adams' "Education" is not to be read as a classic, or because well-read people discuss it over coffee...rather, read it because you're curious. If you've forgotten that school and education are distinct, let Mr. Adams show you the difference. And well meaning teachers of the world.....Phuhleease, don't require Mr. Adams, as you will ruin the experience. --One last note; I think the other reviewers miss the boat when they call Adams cynical and depressing. This is not cynicism, but wit-big difference. For cynicism see Sinclair Lewis' Babbit(which you shouldnt assign either I might add). As far as depressing, I just don't get that at all. It was patently obvious to this reader that Mr. Adams' high-mindedness and detachment were toungue and cheek. In writing his "Education" Mr. Adams, no doubt, enjoyed himself...and while reading it, so will you.

Adam's cynical view of U.S. history is amusing and brilliant

Dear Stefi, Now that there is a slight lull in the happy Chestertown merry-go-round, I want to write a paragraph or two explaining why is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. This is why it is so interesting: It was written about 1906 and covers U.S. intellectual and political history from about 1860 to 1906. What is clever about it is the cynical, humorous sophistication (very unAmerican) with which he, an insider, regards all of these events. The book, like Montaigne or Rousseau's is an autobiography and, like Montaigne, Adams is of the view that life should above all be amusing, so that any great enterprise should be undertaken only if it is indeed amusing. The driving idea of the book, however, is where to find the truth (you guessed it--he is still searching on the last page). The places where he searches are very intriguing. He begins at Harvard, where, says he, he learned nothing from books and only one thing from the classes: how to get up and talk in front of large crowds of people about nothing. He was required to do this routinely, and his speeches were, like everyone else's, greeted with hissing and criticisms, so he learned not to expect approbation from an audience. Adams got heavily into the debate about evolution (Darwin being the hot topic at the end of the nineteenth century), because he thought it was the main amusement of his era. His position on evolution is "reversion" rather than progress. One of his proofs is a comparison of George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant. He admired Washington (a great general who became a great president); he voted for Grant (a great general). He knew personally the members of Grant's cabinet, thieves or incompetents at best. QED: things are getting worse not better. In his old age (sixty), after many other amusements of a busy lifetime, he decided to do what I did at the age of twenty-two: to visit all the important medieval French cathedrals. (In 1958, I bought a car in Saarbrucken--VW bug--and drove to seventeen of the greatest cathedrals, Guide Michelin in hand, staying at the youth hostels.) His book is peppered with well-digested quotations from French literature; he apparently knew it from top to bottom. His goal was to understand the Middle Ages (unity in the Virgin) and to write two books, one about the unity of the Middle Ages (title: ) and another about the diversity of the twentieth century, . Adam's book has a number of difficult spots (confusing original philosophy and historical references that mean something only to the well-informed historian), but the good parts are worth going on to find. I hope this vignette will persuade you to get through the boring chapters at the beginning of the book on his childhood in Quincy. The narrative becomes interesting only with his stories about the Court of Saint James where he spent his early twenties as a diplomat during the U.S. Civil War. From that point on, I think you will love it as much as I did. Cheers! Claire

PROLOGUE
Portrait of a Trader October 2, 2007

Back in 1999, when the world was brimming with optimism, when there were purple Yahoo! taxicabs patrolling the streets of San Francisco, I was a clerk on the options trading floor of the Pacific Coast Options Exchange. It was there that I learned how the financial markets worked. I spent much of my time standing in the back of the Intel-Oracle pit with the other clerks and stock jockeys; that is, the area where traders in Intel and Oracle options congregated.

There was a trader in the pit named Jack Taylor. Jack was six four, 240 pounds, with no concept of personal space. He spent half his day in a personal fast market, almost as though he was on crack, trading everything in sight: “BUY YOUR BOOK, JAN 30 CALLS, 20 LOT! SELL YOUR BOOK, DEC 25 PUTS! SAGEOLA! SAGEAROONI!” He was all arms and legs, thrashing his crumpled-up risk reports, crashing into other traders in the pit, eating lobster and steak burritos, passing gas all over the rest of the crowd, and heading out back to have sex with one of the female exchange clerks behind the Dumpster.

I wanted to be like Jack.

I wanted to be like Jack because he seemed to be one of God’s simplest and most beautiful creations. Make money, good. Lose money, bad. Burrito, good. Hangover, bad. My life seemed terribly complicated, and if I could boil down my existence to this primordial level, then it would be an existentially freeing experience.

But I was wrong. Jack’s wild personality was a smoke screen, a defense mechanism that he had created to convince other people (and perhaps himself, too) that his life really was that uncomplicated. He was not a simple guy but a rather complex one: a smart kid who had graduated from an Ivy League school, who had made deliberate and rational choices about what to do with his life, and who was now having second thoughts. His acting out was his way of coping, his way of distracting himself from the reality that the financial markets are a cruel way to make a living.

Jack now owns a sandwich shop in Chicago: Jack’s Sandos.

All traders go through what Jack went through. They learn to cope with the idea that they are expendable. If you ever take a trip to an investment bank’s trading floor, look around. Try to find the rare and elusive silver fox. Try to count the number of traders over forty. You won’t find many.

Partly this is because of mathematics. If the markets are mostly a zero-sum game, then the winners stick around and the losers find other things to do with their lives. The likelihood of somebody lasting ten years is only about one in five hundred.

The bigger reason that you don’t see old farts on trading floors is because people self-select. After a number of years in the business, they say enough is enough, hand in their company ID, and they go raise alpacas outside of Spokane.

The important detail is that all traders are capitalists of one stripe or another. Some of them are even supercapitalists, staunch libertarians, politically well to the right of even the Republican Party. And capitalism requires a dedication to the pursuit of reality. A rock is a rock is a rock. A rock is not a tree, no matter what mental gymnastics you perform. Profits are profits. Losses are losses. And there is no evading losses. You see your P&L every day, and the negative number stares you in the face.

Back in the civilian world, people permit themselves to evade reality. If the market is down, they won’t open the brokerage statement. They will stop investing. They will give up. They will hope that things come back.

Being a professional trader allows no such evasion. Hope is not a strategy. If you have a loss, you had better figure it out, or you are out on your ass.

That is a hell of a way to live.

But only if you can get to work in the morning. Seven years of this.

I’m late. Again. Did I lock the front door?

If you’re a trader, it is important to exercise the illusion of control, because the reality is that you’re not in control of anything. The smartest man on Wall Street, after months and months of research on a single trade, has no control over the outcome. In the short term, his position can move against him and force him to liquidate the world’s best idea, only to make him watch as it appreciates 200 percent over the next six months.

I definitely turned the coffeemaker off. But I’m not sure I locked the front door.

Traders deal with probabilities. There is a probability distribution for interest rates, for the log return of stock prices, and for cheating on your spouse without getting caught. The world is filled with uncertainty, and you try to model it. You quantify it. I model the likelihood that someone will break into my house if I forget to lock the door, and I determine that it is infinitesimally small. But not small enough.

I’d better turn around and check the front door.

It is true that in the absence of trade, there is war. But trade is just a different kind of warfare: buyers continually demand lower prices, and sellers want more for what they’re selling. A transaction occurs when—for a brief moment in time—buyer and seller can agree on a price. You’d think that both parties would be satisfied at this point, but in practice, they’re more pissed off at each other than they were before. Everyone thinks he’s getting screwed. A trading floor is filled with unhappy people, because nobody is ever satisfied.

Okay. Here we go.

Step outside. Turn around.

Lock dead bolt. Test doorknob. Push against door. Feel that it’s locked.

Lock dead bolt again. Five, four, three, two, one.

But a share of GE stock is worth more than it was just a second ago. In the financial markets, quoted prices are good for an instant; after that, they’re stale. Numbers change, and there are consequences. People start yelling. In fact, traders yell all the time. Sometimes it’s because they’re angry with you, but mostly it is to convey a sense of urgency. Five bid for ten thousand, immediate. Higher, now! I’ve seen kids out of college who were completely unprepared for the brutality of trading. Someone yells, and they crumble. They literally shake. Trading is not for the weak, the indecisive, the passive, or the homeschooled.

Damn it.

Back to the house, all the way from the bus stop.

Forgot to check the refrigerator.

This is madness. The madness. It’s back again, isn’t it?

Intimidation, I found, works pretty well, but only to a point. It can get you the extra penny, the balance of the order, and the price adjustment. But it is not a necessary or even sufficient condition for success. There is the guy in the pit with the glasses that nobody pays attention to. He buys when other people are selling. He steps aside when a big order comes through. He’s cordial. He keeps up appearances, but it is impossible to tell if he is having a good day or a bad day. It is impossible to tell if he is having a good year or a bad year.

He is having a very good year. He is up $3 million.

The refrigerator’s closed.

Back upstairs.

I can’t stand this.

Windows. Bathroom windows, office windows, bedroom windows.

Computer off, printer off.

Concentrate.

Coffeemaker off. Lights off.

Porch windows.

Ready.

It is more important to be smart than it is to be big, or fast, or a jerk. And on Wall Street, there are all kinds of smart. There are mathematicians, people who can find the flaws in Nobel Prize–winning options pricing models. There are computer geeks. There are poker players. There are the social psychologists, like me, who know that human behavior runs in patterns over time. Any or all of them can get rich. The people who don’t are the people who don’t ask questions, the people who consider it a birthright to act as a tollbooth attendant, taking their nickel from the market, not a care in the world.

Different pattern this time. Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.

Lock door.

Lock dead bolt.

Jiggle doorknob. Locked. Nine, five, one. Nine, five, one.

Remember that. And catch your bus.

This is a choice. You can choose not to do this.

There are those who think it is terribly unproductive to have an entire class of people dedicated to buying and selling money. They say that buying and selling money doesn’t actually produce anything. It’s just moving wealth around from one pile to the next. Even if that were true, it doesn’t mean that anyone should care: to most people, making money is an end in itself. There are those, however, who spend their entire career on Wall Street and can’t explain what it is they do for a living when they go home to their children at night. They’re embarrassed for themselves, because they feel that they’re not a force for good in the world.

To me, making money was an end in itself. But beyond that, it is important for any economy to have deep, liquid capital markets. Lost in the debate about the credit crisis—about whether or not it was good for banks to be lending money to people who would have great difficulty paying it back—is the concept that these people, for the first time, had access to capital. The first honest Wall st memoir

This book is a gloves off, brutally honest account of what life is like working on Wall St. Dillian nails it by not hiding a thing about his experience and being brave enough to tell the world his perspective from the "dark side." Anyone who has worked in a sales or trading function, buy or sell side, will appreciate reading this piece. In addition, if you have no connection with Wall St other than the picture that politicians have painted by berating the group, I think this book will help shape your opinion. There is a lot of baggage that comes along with working on the Street that most people are not fully aware of and Street Freak gets to the heart of many of these conflicts.

I like to think of Dillian as the next Michael Lewis with a sprinkle of Bret Easton Ellis: Liar's Poker meets American Psycho.

Hats off to him for having the balls to say how he really feels!

The best account in fiction or non-fiction of the mind of a trader

This is an extraordinary account of what it feels like to trade--and a book with the literary merit to electrify readers with no interest in Wall Street. Most books by traders, such as Victor Niederhoffer, Nassim Taleb or George Soros, filter the raw mental processes through a layer of rationalization. The authors want to impress you with their intelligence, not let you see their inner demons. Dillian is unfilted. Readers should be warned that means lots of farts, snot, bruises, vomit and other impolite things, and this in a book without a trace of grit. We never feel or smell these things, they are like crude graffiti neatly written on the wall of an antiseptic bathroom. Virtually every character (definitely including the author) is insulted and demeaned in ways that are highly incorrect politically. His customers are dirty, douchebags, hicks, slow or dozens of other bad things, never anything good. His coworkers are 95 percent bad things, 5 percent good (but only briefly).

Women, in particular, incite a constant obsessive objectification--and this in a book with absolutely zero sex. The only two women in the book who do anything other than provide a show for junior high school level crude lewdness, are his two psychiatrists who are described only as the "Russian model" and "startlingly attractive". Two words each for the medical professionals who saved his sanity, and only about appearance. His wife is barely in the story, except for a very crude sexual slur by another trader. The electric fan story is sufficient grounds for a sexual harassment suit. But it's not only women. Race, sexual orientation, class, ethnicity, weight, taste in music or clothes and anything else is grist for unpleasant smears.

However, this is not a crude rant, it is a Tourette Syndrome release of tension that is very common among traders. I have never seen it captured on paper like this. Polite authors pretend it doesn't exist, superficial ones treat it as a humorous foible. No one else, as far as I know, has had the honesty, writing talent and courage to expose it in himself. You don't understand traders if you don't understand their need to short-circuit the part of the brain that censors inappropriate behavior.

This book is not an insightful account of mental illness. For most of the book, the author acts like a "seami alki," that is an alcoholic with self-esteem and anger management issues, a combination sufficiently common among traders to require a slang term. His struggles with bipolar and obsessive-compulsive issues are treated matter-of-factly, accurate without being revealing. In fact, Dillian's clinical issues may mislead readers into treating his account as an unusual one. You don't need to be crazy to act like a trader.

The book is also not a useful account of how Wall Street works or why Lehman Brothers failed. The author's understanding of these things is about the level of fulminating editorials by people with no experience in finance. By tradition, it takes thriving through three complete market cycles to acquire trading wisdom. The author made it only though half of one cycle, and the upswing half which is less educational than the downswing. He is like a race car driver who knows little about automotive engineering, physics or how NASCAR makes money. He doesn't have to know those things to drive, he needs only practical intuition, and his ignorance makes his descriptions of the thrills of racing more honest because it's not filtered through what he learned from books.

Unfortunately, the book could perpetuate some false beliefs. There is no positive mention of risk management in this book. The author seems to trade whatever he likes, for whatever reasons he like, in whatever size he likes, without oversight or coaching. Now Lehman had some risk management issues, but letting junior traders run wild was not one of them. Lehman actually had very good trading floor risk management, better than many other firms. Dillian implies that if you made money you were a hero, however many rules you broke. This is definitely not true. Making money was a necessary, but not sufficient, condition of success. The firm required consistent, explainable profits from risk-controlled strategies (on the trading floor, but unfortunately not in every department).

Both the firm and the economic environment conspired to disguise any capital or funding constraint on trading, and the author dealt only in liquid, exchange-traded securities. Lehman's middle and back offices took care of much of the plumbing. This makes his experience somewhat narrow. It's not inaccurate, but it's only part of the story.

So read this book to understand what a trader does, and how he does it, and how he feels about doing it. Do not read it for deep understanding of either finance or mental illness. Read it for the pleasure of an exceptional writer tackling an important profession with breathtaking skill, courage and honesty. But don't believe any of it, except the feel.

A blow-your-brains take on what it's really like to trade

Street Freak doesn't just put you in the Aeron chair of a single trader making markets in every ETF under the sun. It goes beyond the cologne, the order-in sandwiches and flatulence of the Lehman trading floor and puts you deep inside the brain of Jared Dillian--a "poor, smart and determined" Wall Street outsider with an undiagnosed bipolar disorder.

The characters are real and the trades are real. A department head is "a walking molecule of testosterone... who patrolled the aisles, rotating his shoulders and practically his entire torso just to tell people to go f--- themselves." And Jared recounts some of his biggest winning and losing trades with play-by-play accuracy.

While has-been traders like this reviewer will jaw-drop at how Jared literally moved markets on the "Street," it's the dark and deeply personal episodes of the "Freak" that make this a special read. Jared was a great trader, but luckily for us he's an even better writer.

Prunes for Breakfast: One Man's War Based on a True Story is a memoir by John Searancke. This memoir gives readers a heartfelt glimpse into the life of the author's father, Eddie Searancke, during the war years of 1940-1945. Eddie had led a leisurely life while working in his father's construction company, but that changed after joining the army. Although he was not an officer, that did not stop Eddie from becoming one by unconventional standards. He assumed the war would be short-lived with acceptable amounts of casualties, but nothing prepared Eddie for the horrors that he experienced, especially after the Germans captured him. Despite the hardships, Eddie managed to keep his wry wits about him while writing letters to his indulged bride, Elizabeth, and his father.

John Searancke did not know his father very well and often heard how the war had changed him. It was only after Eddie died that he began to connect with him through a packet of letters that Eddie had written to his wife. These expressive letters, which are included in the memoir, give insight into Eddie's daily thoughts and activities while enlisted. Food and basic items were scarce, yet it surprised me to see how Eddie procured them for his family, and how he managed to conduct family business during the war. John Searancke's writing captures his sentiments as well as his father's experiences very nicely. Prunes for Breakfast: One Man's War Based on a True Story is a poignant military memoir that I highly recommend reading.

About the Author
John Searancke is restaurant reviewer for the Canary Islands newspaper Island Connections. He also provides independent book reviews for an English publishing house. Born in 1943 he lived his early life in Ashby-de la-Zouch. Later commissioned into the Territorial Army, he has been variously a hotel and restaurant owner, director and chairman of a marketing consortium, and latterly a partner in a commercial legal services company. He now lives with his wife Sally in northern Tenerife. This is his second book; Dog Days In The Fortunate Islands (Matador, 2014) was his first.

A Personal War Memoir!

Prunes for Breakfast is a personal memoir about an affluent, newly married young man who joins the British Army after the start of the Second World War to fight for his country. Based on letters written by his father Eddie to his mother (and family) during the war, author John Searancke brings his father's story to life by including military and historical research in this finely woven tapestry showing the shocking reality of war and its consequences.

Life in the army is easy at first as Eddie trains and rises through the ranks from private to officer. He's allowed weekend rendezvous with his wife and even has his golf clubs and a fancy auto on base for short excursions. But by the time John's unit is called upon to join Allied Forces and bring an end to Hitler's dream of Nazi domination (in the largest air, land, and sea operation on D-Day, June 6, 1944) Eddie's life changes to one of anguish, hunger, and illness. When taken prisoner of war, John keeps his stiff upper 'British' lip. He continues to write letters home but glosses over his his dire situation.

How fortunate for the author, to be able to piece together this insightful and intimate story of his father's war years.

His Pwesonal War

A fairly affluent and newly married young man is drafted into the British Army. He determines to make the best of the situation and volunteers for
various courses and eventually qualifies for officer candidate training. As a junior officer he is able to have his auto on base and also his golf clubs which prove an excellent way to make friends and pass the time between his weekend leaves to visit his wife. Life in the army becomes somewhat monotonous until his Unit partakes in the D Day invasion of France and the reality and shock of warfare against the Germans. Quite to their despair his unit is overrun and he is taken prisoner of war. The discomfort, illnesses and hunger become his daily life. Truthful and well .written

WW2 from another angle

I feel so privileged to have read this book. It is fabulous how John has compiled his father's letters home during WW2 into a moving tribute.. Having just completed a trip to the Normandy beaches I could picture all the vivid descriptions of war. Even now - 70 years later - all the villages, even though they have reinvented themselves you still feel the history they have suffered. I am not too keen on reading factual accounts of the war but this was more interesting as it was written in a different way - I loved it. Although I didn't want the book to end, I did want Edward's suffering to end and the war to finish.

A beautiful window into the hardship, passion, perseverance and triumph of the immigrant experience and how one woman’s dream takes her on an international journey she could never have imagined as a young girl growing up on a farm in rural Guyana. “Where is Home?” is an illuminating memoir about the struggles of an immigrant to find her place in the world after leaving her homeland for a better life and the love of her family that gives her the sustenance and courage to achieve her goals and create her own “home.” A wonderful and inspiring read that everyone should have the pleasure of experiencing.

The true tale of a girl then woman who grew up in what was then British Guyana on a sugar estate. She moves to England to become a registered nurse and midwife, then to Canada to have fun in the snow and the Ontario health system. Finally a move to the big apple, New York City, where she worked for over two decades principally in the psyche unit of a famous Manhattan hospital. Lots of fulfilled potential for good stories. Inspiring!

evocative autobiography of one woman's experiences in WWI

I first read this book when I was not much younger than Vera Brittain was when she "viewed the outbreak of the First World War as an interruption of her plans", and I was immediately touched by her experiences. I have read (and re-read & re-read) this book many times. While I am not of the same social class that she was, I can relate to her desire to make something of her life, first through a university education (then restricted to many women) and later through finding meaningful work. (This is something that we all seek.) She fell happily in love, only to lose first her fiance, then her two male friends, and finally her beloved only brother in the carnage of the First World War. Her experiences as a V.A.D. (Volunary Aide Detachment) nurse in the war--from describing what the wards were like, to the frenzy she faced during a "push", to watching the Americans arrive in 1917, to her life on the hospital ship "Britannic", that's right, the sister ship to "Titanic"--both went down, are unforgettable. When she writes, she does not spare herself, nor seek to make herself look good--and she takes an unflinching look at her own difficulties (a word which does not even begin to describe it!!) adjusting to a post-war world which did not want the survivors. She tells of the difficulties she had fitting in (again, but this time older & wisher) at Oxford, of her mental near-breakdown, and of the bright light that was Winifred Holtby. I cannot recommend this book enough. It should be required reading in colleges and universities, and not just for history, English, and womens' studies majors. Perhaps those who do not understand what all the fuss over "women's lib." is all about should make this required reading as well (both male and female). She is the first feminist role model for me, and inspired me to learn as much as I could about current events AND history (so much so that I majored in history in college, with a concentration in modern Europe). This book is well worth your time and effort, and will probably send you to the nearest library or bookstore to hunt for more books on this era. It is also rare because most of the books written about the First World War are written by men (Sassoon, Graves, etc.), so this is unique in that it tells of the impact of the war from a woman's perspective. History tends to forget that women as well as men have experienced war. Brittain writes both from the view of those back home in Britain (when she is on leave) and from the view of someone at the front, cleaning up the wreckage (as a volunteer nurse). If you are wondering what happens to her, she wrote a "sequel" of sorts titled "Testament of Experience", which chronicles the years 1933-1950. "Testament of Youth" is a wonderful book, one which you will read again and again, and all the more moving because it is a true story.

world events intersect with personal destiny

Never have I read a better account of current events interupting the normal rituals of young adulthood and changing the destiny of a group of individuals so dramatically. This book so captures the dreams and longings of people coming of age and finding themselves in terms of careers and loves and then having the rug pulled from under them that it could stand as a testimony for all generations shattered by war. In sometimes heartbreaking and often very poetic language the writer takes you along on a journey of discovery under horrific conditions and the reader is made to understand the remarkable transformations that these young people go through. The fact that the book was written by a young woman and is one of the few war memoirs that reflect a feminine sensibility and perspective serves to make this a unique book in the literature of either World War. Required reading for anyone interested in 20th century history.

A wonderfully moving personal account life during WW1

This book by Vera Brittain is one of the most moving that I have read. Written as an account of the experiences of young men and women at the onset and during the First World War, it gives a particular insight which is different from, but equally absorbing as, those accounts, so often understated, of soldiers who fought in the trenches during the conflict. To be more accurate, while she recounts the feelings and experiences of the men who were closest to her, hers is the only woman's viewpoint which is given in any depth - and, indeed, it is her personal account, given in such depth that it draws in and involves the reader in a way unlike any simple factual account of events. While it recounts in some detail her own work as a nurse in the war theatres, it is a story with as much muted romanticism as those of the Brontes or Jane Austen, and belies to a degree the orthodoxy of Vera Brittain's feminism. This is a book to be recommended without hesitation, for anyone interested in the period, but also as a timeless account of human endeavour, endurance and love.

DOROTHY SINCLAIR is an actress/writer living in Westwood, California. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and holds a Masters Degree in Theatre Arts from UCLA. Since 1983, she has been an active member of the professional Beverly Hills theatre company, Theatre Forty, where she can sometimes be heard reading selections from her first memoir, “You Can Take the Girl Out of Chicago.”

Dorothy SInclair has written a sequel and it only gets better. I read it in a gulp, and realized at the end, that this is a universal story of talented women fighting for their souls in the past half century. The promise of marriage, the advice of the entire culture including the supposed help of psychoanalysis, the equal constraints of children's wishes -- all fight against realizing one's own talent. Sinclair's wit is close to that other Dorothy -- Parker, laughter covering the ache.

About the Author
Jane Austen was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English landed gentry. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to her development as a professional writer. From her teenage years into her thirties she experimented with various literary forms, including an epistolary novel which she then abandoned, wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth. From 1811 until 1816, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818, and began a third, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it. Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her works, though usually popular, were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime, but the publication in 1869 of her nephew's A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced her to a wider public, and by the 1940s she had become widely accepted in academia as a great English writer. The second half of the 20th century saw a proliferation of Austen scholarship and the emergence of a Janeite fan culture.

I'm a Janeite, so this was my kind of book. I think it would be too slow and repetitive for anyone not in love with Jane Austen, her people and her time and place. I liked being in on her somewhat snide evaluations of people she meets and situations she encounters, and the letters do soften the 'authoress,' Jane Austen, for me and let me see more of the daughter and sister, Jane Austen. I loved the little details of daily life, writing to her sister and asking for two pair of stockings or some gloves from a particular shop or supplier, the contemplation of new dresses, the yardage to be purchased and then given to the dressmaker, the women of the family sitting in the parlor at their 'work,' making a dozen shirts (by hand with tiny stitches) for a brother soon to go to sea, the breakfasts, teas, dinners - with the food and drink seldom described. You'd think they didn't eat! But then, this is England, not France. Anyway, the book is a time travel vehicle. People die. Babies are born. Mothers die. Fathers remarry. There are constant flirtations and courtings. There is the endless finagling for the right mate, someone of equal status with money, and not too awful. Jane and her sister don't seem to take the deaths very hard. I suppose with someone always dying, and untimely death being so much harder to avoid,it was a matter of course.

Jane's own death is only apparent to us by the cessation of the letters after a period of letters in which she alludes to, but never complains about, a growing disability and fatigue (and I suppose pain). She, who was always out on a fine morning walking somewhere, miles and miles across the countryside or hours and hours in town and city, tells her sister that she is no longer able to walk out and has to be helped to sit outdoors in the garden. I don't think she was yet 50 when she died. I also know that she had work in progress when she died. What have we missed.

I loved this book, couldn't put it down. Just the right amount of explanation and information from the editor.

"Letters of Jane Austen" contains the famous English author's surviving personal correspondence, beginning around age twenty and extending nearly to her early death at age 41. The collection will probably have the most meaning to readers who are already familiar with her life and her novels, which provide the necessary context for fully appreciating her letters.

A number of things about the content of the letters, many of which were addressed to her sister Cassandra, may stand out to the reader. Jane Austen was obviously a gifted writer and a keen student of human nature, and this is highlighted in some of the letters, which can be rather wickedly witty about family, friends and neighbors. If many of the letter topics are commonplace, they provide a sense that Jane Austen never achieved financial security in her lifetime, whether through marrriage or her writing, and remained unhappily dependent on her family. It becomes obvious in the course of the letters that her writing was the most important thing in her life, and that she was a dutiful member of her immediate family, but you can find her sometime wistfully wishing for more. Perhaps most of all, there is a sense of the real Jane Austen present in the letters, even if she tends to be guarded about her inner-most thoughts. This reviewer wishes Cassandra had not been quite so thorough in weeding Jane's letters at her death. "Letters of Jane Austen" is highly recommended to her dedicated fans.

a must-read

I enjoy Jane Austen's books, which I read and re-read to the point of knowing them by heart and still discovering something new in them every time. The letters gave me a wonderful insight in her personality, which was fun, and caustic, and smart, and very feminine. They also made me understand her books much better.
