A powerful story

Can you imagine as a child, your life being put on hold for 2 1/2 years, and first having to sleep with your family on a dirt floor horse stall? and then after that being removed from an interment camp in California and four days of a rail trip [blinds down] to the Rohwer camp in Arkansas...
A real dichotomy of being behind barbed wire and then the US government encouraging interned Japanese American young men to join the army!
What a journey through life to Chicago and following retirement moving to her husbands chosen home of Kauai, and leaving all your friends and family behind.

Relevant and insightful

What a great story told by someone who sounds like a delightful woman! We are lucky to read her fascinating history. It was interesting to learn about the Japanese "mindset of gaman: enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity". I think it goes a long way to explain Yoshiko's family's response to being interned and how they dealt with hardship. Her story is especially relevant considering the pervasive anti-immigration thinking among many Americans now. It is a quick but powerful read and one that I recommend highly.

Timely and unforgettable.

Yoshiko's story, as revealed by Pamela Varma Brown, is both simple and eloquent. An innocent family uprooted and punished for the sins of others. This should sound familiar to anyone who watches the news during these turbulent times. The real beauty is the total lack of blame or malice during events that could have easily fueled hatred. Yoshiko Matsumoto's character and grace are breathtaking.
