The best way to enjoy this book is to HEAR IT!

Jim Rooney is truly a renaissance man. He grew up on the Boston area in the 1940s and 50s and was literally right there at the beginning of the “folk music boom” in the late 1950s. He was a musician performing at a young age and for many years helped run the legendary folk music coffeehouse, Club 47. But, at the same time he was striding Greek mythology and got a Fulbright scholarship to go to Greece for his doctorate. But, while in Greece, he still played American bluegrass and folk music. Then he came home, gave up the Greek studies and went on to perform and produce some iconic records. And, yes, write his autobiography a couple of years ago. But now you can HEAR Jim tell his own story with the audiobook version. It’s read by Rooney himself and – since he’s a natural born performer – that’s a real bonus. Rooney’s voice is laid back and listening to him read, is like sitting in a room with him and asking him: “So, tell me about your life Jim”. Sadly there is no music here so you’ll have to get his albums to hear him sing. But if names like Bill Keith, Jim Kweskin, Bob Dylan, Joanie Mitchel, Bill Monroe, Eric Von Schmidt, Howlin’ Wolf or Mose Allison are familiar to you, you’ll love hearing Rooney’s stories.

Fascinating read. How many degrees of separation away are you?

Chances are if you know, or have met, anyone who has been active in folk, blues, bluegrass, country, cajun or traditional Irish music in the last 60 years you are only one or two steps away from Jim Rooney. This book is a wonderfully entertaining insider's look at the music world written by someone who has been most everywhere and met most everyone, usually helping their career in the process.
Rooney's list of accomplishments fills a book and, I'm sure, leaves another book's worth of stories untold. Along with being a significant artist in his own right (the old Music from Mud Acres cassette was played to death at my house back in the 70s) he has been present at an amazing number of significant concerts, shows and recording sessions as performer, promoter, engineer, producer and more.
Joe Boyd's excellent White Bicycles is a similarly well-written look at a good deal of the same history from a similar perspective and the two books make great companions.

I could not put this book down. Jim Rooney is one of the great heroes of American Music. Any music fan needs to read this book.
