This is a wonderful story detailing the life of one of the Greatest Generation. I loved readying how Randy found a way to overcome every obstacle life threw at him, especially during his formative years when he was denied the security of a warm loving family. Lacking what others often take for granted, I enjoyed reading about how his indomitable spirit and character prevailed, and led him to not only face life’s challenges, help his country win a war, but also went on to find the love of a wife and raise a family of his own. Knowing the love he lacked as a child, I can only imagine what it would be like to one of his children, and how he must have showered them with love, as his way to make up for the love he lacked as a child. What a great father he must have been.
The stories regarding the war years must have taken a great deal of research to recount the detail of Randy’s experiences and the harrowing battles in which he was involved in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Subtly hidden in the stories recounting the naval battles with the Japanese kamikazes as they attacked Randy’s ship, was the shift to the nuclear age, the end of the war with the dropping of the atomic bomb, and the devastation which was left given man’s discovery of such an awesome power. It gives us all something to ponder as we go about living and meeting the challenges of our own daily lives, which could all be ended in an instant given the nuclear power that helped us to end the war.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys bearing witness to the fighting human spirit and will to live a successful, loving family life, and the price people often must pay to enjoy that privilege.
