Ganesh Bagchi was born in Faridpur in the eastern part of Bengal before the partition of India in 1926. The family subsequently moved to Calcutta – Kolkata in today’s West Bengal – where he went to school, college and university and where he got married.
This autobiography, spans a pivotal period in both British and Indian history. The forgotten Great Bengal Famine of 1943, the Second World War, the struggle for Indian independence, the assassination of Gandhi all play a part in his personal history, as does the independence of Uganda, Uhuru in 1963, shortly before the writer’s return to India.

An evocative memoir of an Indian life lived on three continents

In this first volume of an engaging memoir, `My Days and Ways', Ganesh Bagchi writes evocatively about the first five decades or so of his life. He writes with sensitivity and passion against a large twentieth century canvas that spans three continents. In this story of a seeker's odyssey, the reader observes at first-hand the trajectories of an idealistic Indian life, first during colonization and later after Indian independence.
Beyond the documenting of larger events, the book provides glimpses into the author's inner landscape - of the ambivalences associated with postcolonial identity, of life as an expatriate, the push and pull factors affecting the decision to emigrate, and the psychological experience of being part of India's diaspora in Uganda and particularly Britain. The book's climax comes at the end of a long telling, following a trail of events, external and internal, that culminate in a difficult and heart-rending decision. At that point, this first volume ends and leaves one waiting for the sequel which I trust Mr. Bagchi is writing, and which I would hope to read.
A strength of this book, its level of detail, is also paradoxically a source of its fragility. Some readers may have wanted a broader sweep. On balance, authors decide not to write books for everyone but for certain kinds of readers. For those who want an intricate, textured chronicle of the times, there is little to seriously question in Mr. Bagchi's telling of his story which not incidentally, is also a story, in some measure of his generation.
A thematically organized, chronological format might have worked better than the purely chronological one that Mr. Bagchi uses. It might have brought more coherence to his sprawling narrative. Additional editing and proofreading would also help considerably.
`My Days and Ways', finally, is a valuable and relatively rare look at an Indian life just before and after independence. The book is thus both a sociological document and a powerful story about a generation, born approximately between 1920 and 1930, that has been inadequately recorded in Indian scholarship and storytelling.

My days and Ways, an opinion.

My name is Dr.Sukumar Nayar, and I am a retired professor of English and Drama in the post secondary system in Alberta, Canada.
I had the pleasure of knowing Ganesh Bagchi when we were colleagues, working for the British government in Uganda, and recently I had the privilege of reading, the first part of his biography, My days and Ways.
I strongly recommend this book as a very fascinating read..
This somewhat large book is in itself an accomplishment because Bagchi is chronicling a memorable and eventful life pursuing his passion for English and theatre. He writes with enviable charm and for those who are not quite familiar with Indian and Ugandan history, Bagchi's personal involvement in witnessing the turbulent pre- independent days in these countries affords a very interesting perspective. For those who have experienced them, it is a pleasant, if jolting, reminder of the tides in the history of two great countries.
Bagchi is a scholar imbued with extra ordinary talent and skills, and it is very heartwarming to share the life of a very colorful man.
The title is taken from a line in T.S.Eliot's poem "Love-Song of Alfred Prufrock", except that Bagchi is not 'spitting' the butt end of his days. Rather, he is giving us a narrative,sometimes painful often controversial but always honest.
I shall await the publication of the second part of his life saga which takes the reader to several countries, introduces the reader to his charming family, and leaves the reader in awe of a life lived to its full.
