This book is the sequel to "Pass Me The Rice," in which the author described his first two years as an Advisor to the Vietnamese Navy. Betraying the Dragon starts where Pass Me the Rice ended, with Bob Kay being wounded not far from the Binh Loi Bridge north of Saigon. In Betraying the Dragon, Bob Kay describes histreatment for his wounds and his eventual return to South Vietnam as acivilian amputee. He remained in Vietnam until April 1975.

For those who are not familiar withthe Vietnam conflict, I have written a previous book, "Pass Me TheRice," and "Betraying The Dragon" is the sequel. I try to givean insight into the Vietnamese culture and the difficulties encountered inbeing an Advisor embedded with the Vietnamese Navy. I strongly recommendreading them in sequence in order to follow the various unforgettablecharacters from one book to the other and experience the camaraderie thatbonded them together. The books are not the standard "war stories,"but rather a true adventure of a wounded Naval Officer who was invited toreturn by Vice Admiral Zumwalt. Working once again for the Navy, only this time as a civilian, Iwas assigned a crew of seasoned Navy personnel to gather material and buildhomes for the Vietnamese Navy Disabled Veterans. The humorous portions,particularly encountered during off-hours, will bring you closer to these men.At the end, the reasons behind our uncharacteristic abandonment of ourwar-weary ally will be revealed as the time drew near to the fall of SouthVietnam. I think that you will find it an enjoyable and enlightening read.

About the Author
Born and raised in Northern New Jersey to parents of Greek-American descent, he enlisted in the Navy for four years. Attained the rate of Quartermaster-Signalman First Class and became UDT qualified. After the Navy, he attended the University of Minnesota receiving a BA in Cultural Anthropology and a BSME in Engineering. Upon graduation in 1963, attended Navy OCS and received a commission as an Ensign. In 1967, he volunteered for Vietnam duty and was assigned as Senior Advisor to Junk Force Coastal Group 41. Later transferred to Staff Headquarters, he established a monthly Advisor's Newsletter, which won the Chief of Information's Best Newsletter Award for that Quarter. He extended his tour to become Senior Advisor to VN River Assault Group 24. With less than two months to go, he was wounded and medevac'd home. After his leg was amputated below the knee, he retired from the Navy. Commander Naval Forces Vietnam, Vice Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, requested that he return to Vietnam to head a unit to assist VN Navy Disabled Veterans. His Anthropology degree made him a natural Advisor.
When the US Military departed Vietnam in March 1973, he joined the Defense Attaché Office, Saigon as the Administrative Officer for the N-4 Logistics Office. After eight years in-country, he, his Vietnamese wife, and three-month-old daughter were evacuated to the States in late April 1975 when the North Vietnamese surrounded Saigon. He joined PERA (CRU-DES) in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as the Repair Engineer for Battleships and Cruisers, and after twenty-two years of Civil Service, he retired. They now reside in Pensacola, FL where he works at his writing.

An excellent story. I know, I was there. I recommend to anyone who likes to read, but I would recommend reading his first book "Pass me the Rice" first, since this is a sequel.
