On a barge in France, by Harvey Schwartz

Buy a 90-year-old Dutch canal barge, a 70-foot former commercial boat, and cruise the canals and rivers of France. Brie, Burgundy and baguettes. Snails and foie gras. Engine breakdowns and language adventures. Sounds like a dream. In On a Barge in France, Harvey Schwartz tells of the four summers he and his wife spent on Hoop Doet Leven ("Hope Gives Life") traveling the French countryside and learning to live a slower, fuller life. Each chapter offers a slice of French life, a potpourri of the classic French lifestyle that perseveres in small towns along the canals and rivers.

About the Author
Harvey Schwartz is a retired Boston civil rights attorney. Although he argued two cases before the United States Supreme Court, he is perhaps best known in Massachusetts for successfully overturning the state's ban on tattooing. He argued that tattoos are art and that as artistic speech, the right to tattoo is protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. As a reward, he was declared the Massachusetts Tattoo Artists Association Mass Ink Man of the Year. As punishment, however, both his sons' are encrusted with tattoos. In 2011, Mr. Schwartz and his wife, Sandra Hamilton, purchased Hoop Doet Leven, a 21 meter (70 foot) former commercial canal barge built in the Netherlands in 1926. They lived on Hoop Doet Leven in France for twenty months and have spent every summer since then cruising the French canals and rivers, primarily in northeastern and central France. Mr. Schwartz also wrote a novel, The Reluctant Terrorist, presenting a plausibly terrifying depiction of events similar to the Holocaust happening in the United States. That book is available from Amazon in paper and electronically. When not in France, Harvey and Sandra live in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He operates Marshview Boatworks, building small wood rowing and paddling boats. They maintain a blog about their travels at www.onabargeinfrance.com.

Buy this book - it is Fantastic
By Edward B. Rauscher
This book is an informative and often humorous chronicle of the recent adventures of an American couple who bought a barge and used the extensive canal network in France to find good food, wine and friendship (yes, the French people can be/are super friendly) in France. The author is adept at pulling out the interesting contrasts and similarities across cultures. Buy and read it, you'll love it.

Send this man back to France - to write more books
By Ian McCauley
My wife and I thought this book was wonderful. Some thoughts…

First, for those looking for a book with all the practical details of buying, cruising and maintaining a barge in France - there are probably better books out there.

But, if you are contemplating a barging lifestyle in France, or if you want affirmation of your experiences on the Gallic waterways, then I doubt there is a finer tome out there.

What Harvey describes is the transformation of an attorney of note, railing against the US Supreme Court, into a passionate acolyte to the Zen of France. His humorous and eloquent descriptions of all things French, in the context of cruising Hoop Doet Leven (there is plenty of travelogue), is enjoyable and informative. This you may find in other books. What I have never found is a more convincing description of the transformative impact of French culture on someone who has become newly, and deeply involved with it. At the end, we can appreciate how France changed the fire breathing, tattooist's-champion attorney into the mild, relaxed chap who finds comfort squatting in a box labelled "send to France" - and hope that we can be similarly transformed.

If you want to cruise France in the hope of appreciating all things French, then Harvey's book will fill you with lust to get on with it. For those lucky enough to be doing it - then I’m sure much of the book will resonate with your experiences.

A delight to read, easy going, humorous in many parts, deeply passionate in others. A great experience.

New Land, Language, and Lifestyle
By A Customer
The author is a brilliant civil rights lawyer with, in Boston parlance, a wicked sense of humor. Witness the Supreme Court account of an exchange with Justice Antonin Scalia when Schwartz most professionally pleads "with all due respect" and paraphrases in his mind "what a moron I think you are, your honor"

The book chronicles an envious experience touring the canals of France in an almost 90 year old, 21 meter (70 foot) Dutch built canal barge. His descriptions of the experience are very human and relatable. Everything that happens to Harvey and Sandra, his Foredeck Queen, are things that could and should happen to everyone, and his recounting style makes them memorable and entertaining.

If you have ever cruised either on land or water just you and your wife, or want to, and love the adventure of a new land, language, and lifestyle this will be a good read.

It is a journal that will throughly entertain and make you want to spend some time on Hoop Doet Leven.
