Until the Twelfth of Never: Should Betty Broderick ever be free?, by Bella Stumbo

They were two of the most notorious and controversial murder trials of the last twenty-five years, splitting American public opinion in half. Before dawn on November 5, 1989, Betty Broderick got into her car and drove over to the house in San Diego of her lawyer ex-husband, Daniel T. Broderick III, and his new wife, Linda. Arriving at 5:30 a.m., she used a key that she had obtained from one of her children to enter the house by a back door and climbed the stairs to Dan and Linda’s bedroom. Five shots rang out in the dark, three hitting their targets. Linda died instantly. Dan lingered on for several minutes. As he tried to call for help, Betty stamped on his hand and tore the phone from the wall. The prosecution claimed it was as about as clear a case of premeditated murder as anyone could imagine. Betty claimed she had gone over to the house to talk to Dan - or maybe to commit suicide in front of him - but when someone shouted, ‘Call the police’, she got flustered and started firing. Betty Broderick was acquitted of first degree murder in her second trial but found guilty of second degree murder. To some, Betty Broderick is virtually the patron saint of the sanctity of marriage, executing her abusive, cheating husband and his ‘nineteen year old college dropout of a Polack whore’ (actually Linda was twenty-eight, a college graduate and a professional paralegal). To others, Dan Broderick suffered his wife’s abuse of him for fourteen years of marriage, left her well provided for and then married the love of his life, only to be continually stalked for seven years, to have Betty repeatedly incite his children to kill him and Linda, to find her driving her car through the front door of his new house, and then to be murdered in the coldest of blood. Bella Stumbo’s account of the Dan, Linda and Betty Broderick affair is encyclopedic and definitive, and ‘Until the Twelfth of Never’ was a runaway international bestseller when it was first published twenty years ago, as well as winning an Edgar Award. Bello Stumbo herself died in 2002, so was not alive to cover Betty Broderick’s parole hearing in 2010, a short account of which is included in this book. Dan Broderick, Linda Broderick and Betty Broderick – saints or sinners? Betty Broderick – sane or insane? Read ‘Until the Twelfth of Never’ and you will certainly have an opinion. (Contains new material – interviews with Dan Broderick’s friend and an analysis of Betty Broderick’s handwriting.)

Until the Twelth of Never
By tee gee
Elizabeth Anne Broderick was the perfect wife to Daniel T. Broderick III. She was beautiful, wealthy and bore him four children. Their life was idyllic until suddenly he started to spend more time away from home. Elizabeth knew why of course but decided to turn a blind eye. After all if she was the perfect mother to his children he would see sense eventually.
Divorce followed separation and finally Elizabeth realised she was on her own. The courts had granted Dan and his new wife Linda Kolkena Broderick custody of the children. Thus begun her campaign of revenge fought equally by Dan (An eminent Attorney at Law).
Finally unable to take it any more Elizabeth Ann Broderick or Crazy Betty as she became known pocketed her .38 Smith and Wesson drove to their house and shot them both while they lay sleeping.
This reader did begin to question at times who exactly was the victim. Was it the debonair Dan Broderick, with the new attractive wife, who had custody of his children? Here was a man who relentlessly thwarted Betty in her every move, unless she toed the line and did exactly as he requested. Deducting money from maintenance checks if she used offensive language when leaving messages on his ansaphone.
OR was the victim Crazy Betty Broderick the perfect wife and mother, pushed to the limit with frustration who only wanted her husband back and custody of her children.
Murder in any form cannot be condoned but this reader is surprisingly undecided on the victim.

Long but worth the read.

I thought I knew the whole story on the Brodericks and their marriage until i read this account. While long it is well worth your read, as it has a ton of details i had not read or heard anywhere else. The writing was excellent, never lagged or was boring. I had to force myself to put it down at times.

Dan Broderick did not deserve to be killed, but what he put Betty through was nothing short of torture. The man didn't want to be with her anymore and move on, he didn't need to poke her all the time. She had threatened to kill him over and over and he not only kept going but also refused to have even a basic security system installed. Linda died in part because of this.

But Betty is not innocent at all in this story. She simply could not get over her rage long enough to look to the future. If she had just settled down and realized you can't force someone to stay with you she would have walked out of this divorce with half of Dans money and the kids. She would have looked the best. But instead she dumped the kids off and proceeded to make them and everyone else miserable just because she was not getting her absolute way. I have a feeling she was always a hard woman to deal with. Also, kind of hypocritical of her to claim that she CANNOT get divorced is because of her Catholic Religion and rearing in the church, but she had 2 abortions while married to Dan. Kind of picking and choosing what rules of God to follow there.

Dan was warned by his own friends that he was pushing a mentally ill woman to the breaking point. Betty couldn't look beyond her own betrayal and rage to see what she was doing to herself and the children. I only feel for the babies in all this.

Well researched and written definitive book on the Broderick Trial.
By Barbara T. Heller
I have wanted to read this book for years, but it was out of print. I downloaded the Kindle app for my laptop, bought the book and enjoyed the read. This is the definitive, well written and best reasearched book on the Broderick murders. What a tragedy for all concerned. This book will make anyone a believer in temporary insanity ... The entire trial procedings were horribly mismanaged. Betty Broderick was obviously insane and severely depressed. I also think that she was unable to find an attorney willing to represent her against Dan Broderick in divorce court. Dan Broderick largely ontributed to his own demise by his legal machinations and constantly manipulating his family and tormenting Betty. He knew what she was like, as he and his girl friend continued to pour gasoline on the fire that they had created. When someone threatens your life, believe them. Dan Broderick thought that he was God, as he manipulated the lives of others through his misuse of the law. It backfired on him badly. Had he handled this volatile situation better, he and his girl friend might still be alive and his children would have a living father and a mother. I believe that Betty Broderick was legally insane at the time of these murders.
