John Klapproth has presented with this book a thoroughly scholarly work, based on hard facts, and thus it follows number of serious Beethoven researchers like La Mara, Jean and Brigitte Massin, Kaznelson, Goldschmidt, and last but not least, Marie-Elisabeth Tellenbach. They all have came via fact-based research to the conclusion that only Josephine Brunsvik could have been the addressee of the famous letter to the "Immortal Beloved". He refutes the Antonie hypothesis (expressed almost exclusively in America by Solomon) with Beethoven's own words from the famous letter:
(1) "Mondays – Thursdays – the only days when the post goes from here to K." and
(2) "you will probably not before Saturday receice the first news from me."
“K” means Karlsbad, 100 kilometers away from Teplitz, the place, from where Beethovens wanted to post letter. It would have arrived on the following Friday morning in Karlsbad. However, in the letter there is talk of Saturday. That cannot be Karlsbad, but a different, more distant location must therefore have been the destination of the letter. It was to be mailed only via Karlsbad. This other place was most likely Franzensbad, about 60 kilometers from Karlsbad. Josephine could have traveled there to meet the Emperor, a good friend of her deceased first husband, to ask him for help. Antonie along with her husband and children had stayed at Karlsbad, which Beethoven knew very well.
This book contains everything there is on this subject. Of particular importance is a detailed analysis of the 15 letters by Beethoven to Josephine and 8 by her to Beethoven, and he uncovered and corrected a number of translation errors. The most serious: "wir werden uns wohl bald sehen” [we will probably see eachother soon] was wrongly rendered as "No doubt we shall meet soon". This is an important difference. Solomon’s Antonie hypothesis is based on this false certainty.
After reading this excellent book, it should become clear even to those dyed-in-the-wool that the Antonie thesis is definitively off the table, and finally also in Amerika. The author deserves our thanks for his passionate commitment.
