In 1959, Hank Olesen led his small family on an adventure, or an “ex…peddience in the moun...tains” as he liked to say, with a put-on accent. After many campouts, and several one- to three-day hikes in the Mammoth Lakes, California area, Hank decided to tackle the BIG ONE, the John Muir Trail, which today is the highest elevation portion of the later completed Pacific Crest Trail. Begun in 1915, by 1959 the John Muir Trail was the only established long-distance trail in the Sierra, starting in the north at Yosemite and ending at Mt. Whitney, elev. 14,505 ft. Hank was a Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout, and in the 1950s he was a Boy Scout leader. His son Jack, 13, was a Boy Scout working on his Silver Moccasin badge and John Muir Trail badge. Margaret was a willing, if somewhat intimidated, participant. However, it was Margaret who recorded the adventure in a small notebook with a stubby pencil and who took beautiful Kodachrome slides of the spectacular scenery, many of which are reproduced in this book (B&W in this version). Hikers who have traveled the JMT or the PCT, or are planning to, will enjoy this glimpse of what the hike was like before the modern equipment, regulations and packaged foods of today were available.

BacK on the Bucket List

It is short and concise, but very well written. Margaret's descriptions of the beauty of their days were so poetic, and the photography stunning, I grew up with this family, and saw the slides larger than life many times in neighborhood slide shows. My only regret about the book was that the pictures weren't bigger. The postcard size format doesn't do them justice, but making them bigger would mean so many would have to be left out, or the book would be too expensive. I have been hearing about this trip all my life, and because of that I have always wanted to hike the trail. I had just about decided I was too old to do it now, but the book gave me new inspiration. They met so many hikers of all ages, maybe it's not too late to try some of it in small stages...An enjoyable read, and a fun trip down memory lane.

Loved this book! A great day by day account of hiking through one of the most beautiful places in the country. As you read a little bit about each days hike, it brings you back to any and every hiking/camping trip you have ever been on. The long, steep climb and aching knees and feet are all worth it when you reach the top and look around at the beautiful landscape. I am reading to go hiking again after reading this book! A trip of this length (4 week/200 miles) is something I have always dreamed about. In the back of the book, they have included the plans for each meal and day, how long to hike(5-8 miles on average) the menu for the entire trip including scheduled food drop pick ups.
An awesome account of a wonderful family trip!

A fun read.

As the title says this is the journal of a JMT hike in 1959. It's short but delightful. It was interesting reading of hiking in jeans and doing other things we would not do today. I was impressed though with their knowledge and use of hiking practices we do use today. I think they were ahead of their time with hiking the whole JMT--something not many people were doing at that time. A fun read.
