I can't believe I've worked at three of these! No wonder I used to be depressed

I randomly stumbled across this book when I was looking for a new job (I seem to always pick companies that are high paying but have a low sense of employee morale). It turns out I was right, since I've worked for three of these companies!!! I couldn't believe it. I'm going to give my next job some more thought. I worked at IBM, McMaster Carr and HP (and a few more that were not on this list).

I started out at IBM after interning there. The culture drastically changed under new leadership though, and we began to hemorrhage talent to start ups and those willing to jump ship made out like bandits (I should have done this). Instead, I foolishly stuck around a dying company in order to avoid having to look for a new job. I then worked at McMaster Carr for a few years. I accepted the job because I thought it would be less hours than IBM and they would reimburse me for my MBA. They did reimburse me for my MBA (which was great) but the hours/stress of the job at McMaster took a toll on me, and eventually my wife, who divorced me during this period (I had started drinking to cope with the depression caused by working there). After a few months of unemployment and soul searching, I moved across the country to work for HP. I actually liked my job there but was ultimately laid off in one of many mass downsizings that occurred. I now work as a consultant with GE and love it! I can telecommute several days each week and I do not fear being fired every day. The hours are still long, but I enjoy my work and I don't feel like I'm contributing to an oppressive company (IBM, McMaster and HP all felt like that). I've been sober for two years, am dating again, and most importantly, I feel happy again!

The bottom line is-don't choose a job just for the money. I did this and it cost me my marriage and health. Find something you love, and live a balanced healthy life. Jobs with high salaries usually come at a cost (if they tell you otherwise-it's probably to good to be true).

Accurate assessment of IBM

I worked for IBM and this is spot on! This company has not changed nearly as fast as it needs to in order to keep up with the changes in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

As a former teacher and present school counselor, I am amazed at the beauty of insight into the hearts of children accomplished through 'talk story'. Relationship is the first building block to learning and I was moved over and over by the love and tenaciousness of a teacher for his class of 'n'er-do-wells', whom all of us in education have known in our varied settings. Well Written With Sound Practical Information

Well I just finished reading through this book for the second time in as many days and I have to say that I am actually pretty impressed with pretty much all of the content contained within this 200 page book. Now that isn't meant to imply that I agree 100% with everything written, but I would say that I am pretty much in about 90 to 95% agreement with the author on the various subjects he discusses throughout the twenty chapters in this book. There are a couple of things that I definitely don't agree with, and then there are a few others that I partially agree with but with some reservation. And there are a couple of things that I really had issues with, but those will be discussed later in this review.

The author really did a fantastic job at giving you the reader the necessary information and guidelines for you to start researching and training in order to better prepare yourself for an actual realistic "gunFIGHT," not the Hollyweird version of reality which for the most part has no actual semblance to reality be any stretch. Combining empty-handed skills with handgun handling skills is far better that just one or the other, and the author does an excellent job at explaining how to bridge that gap.

For now here is a list of the chapters in this book with a brief description of the contents of each chapter. Please be advised that the material in each one of these chapters could more often than not be an entire book or at the very least a much larger portion of the book. However, the author has kept the material fairly short and succinct and to the point, which is great for this particular book which is intended to give you a large overview of the material you need to study and practice in order to become more confident and competent in an actual gunFIGHT!

Chapter One: Safety Considerations

One must definitely have "SAFETY" in mind whenever training, whether it is practicing your empty handed skills, with a firearm, knife, or any weapon, especially when practicing any kind of combative technique. The author really stresses this point and although it can seem to be a "No-Brainer," it is usually complacency that ends up getting someone hurt. Don't be complacent, it can really be costly to do so!

Chapter Two: Legal Considerations

The only thing I am going to comment on about this section is simply this, "What does anything matter if you are dead?" The number one concern should always be for you to live and be victorious over your attacker. I don't personally know what happens to you after you die. I have my own believes about that as I am sure you do as well, but they are only believes! You don't know for sure and I don't know for sure what happens after we die, but I can tell you this, "It is far better to be alive that it is to be dead!"

Chapter Three: Awareness

Awareness and Avoidance are almost always your best first line of defense. Free yourself from frivolous distractions when your safety is more at risk, and pay attention to the people and events going on around you. Although avoidance is almost always your best form of defense, there are times when you are unable to avoid and sometimes when you shouldn't avoid.

Chapter Four: Mindset

Very, very, very important and unfortunately not many instructors do enough to train their students in this subject. Good basics and offers some better reference material.

OKAY, here is the one particular sentence on page 29 in this book that I have the most problems with and it goes as follows: "That's why instructors worth their salt focus on simple, gross motor-based techniques that are easy to recall and execute under stress." Now to understand this sentence in its full context you need to read the complete paragraph in which it was contained. Although I do admit that, in the beginning, students should focus on those simple basic skills until the become instinctive, but as you train and progress even the most intricate of techniques can become simple and instinctive. Just ask any surgeon who performs life-saving surgeries if they are not under a considerable amount of stress, and yet, they seem to be able to handle complex fine-motor skills just fine. All it takes is time, effort, and proper guidance, and the ability to stay calm under stress. Everything that can be learned and practiced, but often is not.

Chapter Five: Dynamics of Close Quarter Engagements

Hollywood vs. Reality: an entirely different ball game.

Chapter Six: Choosing A Gun, Holster, and Carry Method

Just like your shoes size, there is no one size fits all. You have to find the right materials for you. Just because so-and-so recommended this because that is what they use does not mean that it will be right for you.

Chapter Seven: Fending and Striking

Utilizing empty handed skills alongside your handgun shooting skills.

Chapter Eight: Countering the Draw Stroke

How to counter your attacker as he/she reaches for their gun or other weapon.

Chapter Nine: Addressing a Drawn Weapon

Dealing with an attacker who already has their gun drawn and pointed at you.

Chapter Ten: Ready Positions

The author discusses several different handgun ready positions.

Chapter Eleven: The Draw Stroke

Getting your gun out of the holster and on target as quickly and effectively as possible during an actual combative engagement.

Chapter Twelve: Shooting From Retention

How to shoot from a less than perfect range shooting position.

Chapter Thirteen: Contact Distance Shooting

Shooting your attacker with the muzzle basically placed up against the attackers own body.

Chapter Fourteen: Striking With Your Gun

Although this should only be done as a last resort when your gun is no longer capable of ding its primary function, which is to shoot bullets out of the barrel.

Chapter Fifteen: Holstered Handgun Retention

How to keep an attacker from getting your gun when it is holstered.

Chapter Sixteen: In-Hand Handgun Retention

How to keep your attacker from taking your gun away from you once you have it in hand.

Chapter Seventeen: Fighting From the Clinch

Utilizing empty handed combatives and handgun skills while in a clinch with your attacker.

Chapter Eighteen: Fighting From the Ground

The last place you want to be is on your back on the ground with an attacker hovering over you, but if it does happen here are some things to help you overcome this situation.

Chapter Nineteen: Handling Multiple Assailants

This is a lot more common than one would think and is always going to put you at some kind of disadvantage.

Chapter Twenty: Training Progression

Basically some sound advice on continuing your training both empty handed and with a firearm.

One of the biggest problems I had with this book was not the written text, which was very informative and valuable, but the very small photographs that were displayed throughout the entire book. These photographs needed to be much bigger and, in some cases, shown from more than just the one angle. Some of the descriptions would have been much better had the accompanying photographs been from more than one angle along with being much larger.

Another problem I had was the absolute absence of any illustrations whatsoever. There were several instances where some added illustrations would have definitely added to the overall effect of the written material being presented. Not a deal breaker by any stretch, but it would have been nice to have had illustrations in the appropriate locations throughout the book.

In closing I would definitely give this book my highest recommendation and am proud to have it in my personal library!

An Essential Book For Any Self-Defense/Martial Arts Instructor Or Student

This is a great book. As an author, ("Krav Maga: Real World Solutions To Real World Violence") I understand and appreciate the importance of engaging writing - something a lot of author in the reality based self defense world often forget. This is a very well written book, and more importantly a very sound and sensible one. The author immediately won me over when he stressed the importance of awareness, over technical skills - this type of statement marks someone out as someone who understands what real-life violence is all about.

I may not agree with every technique shown/demonstrated, however I agree with 95% of the methodology and approach presented - the remaining 5% is down to personal preference rather than outright disagreement. This book should be in the library of anyone interested in and/or teaching about real-life violence. I really can't recommend it enough.

Good book with a realistic look at CQC

This book is better than most armed self-defense books that I have read. It definately breaks the old mind-set (that many so-called self-defense instructors teach) that armed encounters happen at a distance with plenty of time to react. Nance presents a very gritty world where your adversary is instantly in your face, trying to take your gun away from you and you are fighting for your life.

My first complaint is that the illustrations are small and it is hard to see the details of some of his defense moves.

My second complaint is that when Nance presents a defense scenario, he does not bring the reader back to a real conclusion of that scenario. For example, he may present a technique to block a grab of your gun, but he does not suggest what to do once that technique is completed.

All-in-all, this is a good book in presenting what CQC is in the real world. It has made me consider taking an unarmed self-defense class (such as Krav Maga) along with keeping my shooting skills sharp.

About the Author
I reside in Montgomery, Alabama, with my loving husband, Ray, of twenty happy years. We have a blended family of four children and four beautiful grandchildren! Three of our grandchildren belong to Douglas, who is in the navy stationed in Florida. One grandchild belongs to our daughter, Jennifer, in Tennessee. Our other two sons Jason and Trevor live in Louisiana and north Alabama. I breathe via a ventilator connected via a tracheotomy tube 24-7, and through God's love and presence in our life, it remains a joyful one. Advocacy for people with disabilities remains a part of me, and I still hope to make a difference in this world!

INSPIRING!

Amazing life story of the author, Lilly, who endured the devastating effects of polio (and the shocking lack of accomodations available in the 60's and 70's for the physically challenged)! Even so, this courageous young woman endured and flourished through high scool, college and in a challenging and important career, making Alabama a better place to live for those whom others label as 'handicapped'. Yet, probably even more challenging and devastating for Lilly, was her loving family's history of tragedy and pain. Thank God, through it all, she gained a wonderful son and a new family to love her, as she bravely marched through life. There are, as in most self-published works that I've read, a few grammatical issues that can easily be fixed, but this heart-rending, yet often funny, book is well worth the read and would be especially inspiring for anyone facing life's 'insurmountable' challenges!

it is not easy but we continue to survive

Sincere thanks to the author for sharing her story with us. This sharing is evidence of her strength and character. I read the book at one time, cover to cover, as I was so eager to know what was coming next. I've known Lilly (at a distance) since at least 1994 and have appreciate all that she has done with her life. I particularly appreciate her sharing the polio stories and reminding people we are still here, it is not easy but we continue to survive.

This is a great story of learning who you are

This is the first time reading works from Sarah Fraser, MD. As a recovering addict myself, I found this story compelling, honest and most of all educational to what people of addiction go through on a daily basis. People who have never had addiction issues do not see it as a disease. You want to stop doing drugs, you know you should stop doing drugs, but you can't. It's so controlling, it's powerful, it can turn your life into a never ending whirlwind of despair.
Room For Growth also shows that with inner strength and coming to realize that you need to stop....... You can.....This is a great story of learning who you are, who you want to be and trying to become that person. Finally an "in your face" story of how the "real" world is.....

This book is truly amazing, it gives you a different perspective on addiction and what it feels like to have one. Addiction is hard to fight but it can be done. Very inspirational definitely recommend.

Yes you can draw portraits

I think anyone will find this book very helpful. It simplifies facial structure and proportions first then moves you through all the facial features, contours and tonal values. This is the most effective method I have seen in any book so far. A real confidence builder and skill developer.

) I did one of my best short sketches ever

From the moment I opened this book I was riveted. (It took me about 5 hours to read in one go from beginning till end, while sketching along, following the instructions and steps.) I did one of my best short sketches ever, drawing with confidence, and knowing what I was doing. As a self-taught artist, and having amassed heaps of online material on portrait and figure-drawing over the years, this book ranks among my top three.

I've read about the Repin Academy in Russia, have seen drawings of their students online, and wished I was one of them. With this book, I came very close to being there, and am delighted to know I am following in the footsteps of artists who make great art. The instructions in the book are clear and precise. Moreover, as I drew along while reading, heaps of drawing mistakes I habitually make became obvious, with instructions on how to rectify them. For instance, I hardly ever gave sufficient attention to incorporating the neck and shoulders in portraits except as an after-thought. Now I know why they are as important as every other aspect of the drawing. I especially like the constructive drawing-through or drawing transparent approach. It helps me to accurately place and draw parts of the model not observable, like the shape of the skull or pit of the neck usually hidden by the hair mass or clothing.
One of the best things about the book is it gives me confidence to draw with more certainty from here on, having a clear structure to follow from beginning to end. Again, having information on portrait drawing coming from the old Russian masters is a huge bonus.

Revelation !

Excellent step by step instruction on the 3/4 view in portrait. I FINALLY understood some of the mistakes I was making. The best way to use this book is to draw along as you read, putting into practice immediately the approach with measurements, lines, points of references, shading techniques, etc. This is how you can appropriate the instruction, by doing as soon as you read it. Also I found useful to do many starts, that helped memorize the measurements and what to connect. I can't recommand this short book enough, it is truly an eye opener on how the face is designed, how everything connects in such a logical fashion. The author has great teaching skills, he knows how to explain succintly yet clearly, giving the students the right amount of info -not too little, not too much- to obtain a successful satisfying result. I definitely encourage anyone who's considering this purcase to go for it, you won't regret, especially at such an affordable price.
