Leah grows up in fairly impoverished circumstances as the child of a broken home in Brooklyn. Her father, who is chauvinistic and verbally abusive to Leah and her sister, separates from Leah's mother, Vicki Marshall. Leah is plagued by a constant sense of inadequacy, instilled in part by her father's put-downs, but also by her own sense of insecurity and status consciousness. She compares herself to her friends and neighboring families, whose mothers cook family meals and iron their clothes, despite their difficult circumstances. Vicki, though loving, is a rather absent-minded mother. Leah finds herself continuously searching for acceptance and validation, and struggles to be more like everyone else....

The actual book is a blistering condemnation of a cult masquerading as a church. This is "NOT" the book. It is a summary.

Do not waste your time on any summary when you can own the actual book for a nominal amount more. The book is an engaging and accessible five star read.
Ms. Remini is to be congratulated for her exposé of Scientology. Her writing style is both direct and unpretentious with the narrative realistic and compelling. The actual book is a well written, firsthand account of a malicious institution devoted to the exploitation of decent honorable people. It is a perfect example of what can happen to sensitive compassionate souls who are trying to do what’s right in a cult dedicated to greed and evil. The candid rendering of the material makes for a speedy, though intense read.
Ms. Remini and co-author Rebecca Paley waste no time in stripping away the cheap veneer of a scam that was created by a Hollywood hack for Hollywood goofballs. They lay bare a ploy that has slowly metastasized into a sinister sect of the contemptible. There is nothing positive to say about an organization that has degenerated to a level rivaling the Branch Davidians and Warren Jeffs FLDS. All three are examples of the blatant abuse and distortion of the first amendment in the United States.
Ms. Remini is not the first principled person to be victimized by an institution of the deceitful. Unfortunately she will not be the last. She is, however to be applauded for having the backbone to stand up and tell the truth. When it mattered most, she reclaimed her common sense, exercised her critical thinking skills and in so doing has shed a glaring light on an unethical and revolting organization.
Judging from the content, Ms. Remini does not seem to understand that she is a victim of child abuse. There is no excuse for any parent to deliberately lead an impressionable child into such a labyrinth of exploitation and corruption. Through her book, she has made clear the detrimental effects that a cult can have when allowed to masquerade as a church/religion. She is to be celebrated for her efforts and forgiven for being naive enough to fall for such nonsense in the first place.
I highly recommended the actual book. Disregard any summary. The impact of the material, which is considerable, is lost when dumbed down for simpleminded consumption.

~~ Find out what life in Scientology is really like ~~

If you want all the nitty-gritty of what, when reading this Instaread summary, appears to be a very compelling novel, then you are going to want to dive straight into the original. HOWEVER if you don't have time to read all of Lisa's story about her life in the Church of Scientology and her eventual decision to leave then get this synopsis (think DETAILED review). This summary is only 30 pages long and really does a good job of condensing the 256 page original.
Growing up in Brooklyn, Leah, due to family circumstances, never feels good enough. When her mother's new boyfriend introduces the family to Scientology, Leah begins to feel some self-worth. That doesn't last long and the reality of the 'harshness' of this cult soon becomes clear. It is at the wedding of Tom Cruise in 2006 where Leah really begins to see behind the charade and sees the hypocrisy and manipulation from the leaders for what is really is. She finally leaves in 2013.
Do you know what a SP (Suppressive Person) is? Leah's story may well be an eye opener for many readers. The original is described as written in a "clear, engaging style" with some curse words scattered throughout.

The journey from low self-esteem to high self-worth

Leah Remini is a well-known screen personality. TV fans will remember her as the irrepressible wife in the TV comedy, ‘King of Queens,’ with Kevin James. In Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Remini tells of her journey from her impoverished origins in Brooklyn to the heights of TV-stardom. In her own words, she tells of being subjected to an abusive father, who deserted the family; a loving, but distant mother; and her experiences with the Church of Scientology as a way of overcoming her feelings of low self-esteem.
