Anthony McCandless was born the second of 13 children in 1955 in Tipton, England. The area was known as the Black Country because of the dark clouds of smoke and soot that blanketed the area. With its foundries, factories, and coal-fired power plants linked by a network of industrial canals, the Black Country and its inhabitants were unique and in many ways isolated from the rest of England. It was a tough place to grow up, especially for a boy with a stammer and an abusive father, living right next to the marl hole dump.

It Takes Courage To Grow Up!

This is an eye-opener of a book, both hilarious and heart-breaking. It's a unique memoir, written from the bottom of the author's battered but triumphant soul, and it offered me many things to ponder: the grinding effects of poverty; the doggedness it takes to survive; the bubbling up of the human spirit; and the absolutely amazing ability some people have to keep moving forward in spite of everything life throws at them.
Don't miss this book! Reading it is a life-changing experience.

An excellent mix of humor and tragedy.

This is a book that is truly worth reading. The many, often humorous, stories provide the reader with unexpected insights into a life filled with physical and psychological suffering. The author does not shrink from revealing his own shortcomings and we are kept in suspense as to how his story will end. His final triumph, though far from perfect, is a lesson for us all.

but I liked The Marl Hole Kid more

This book is similar to Angela's Ashes, but I liked The Marl Hole Kid more, because he was such a likable character. He has heart, making me root for him as I read. He seemed to be born with an inner sense of fairness, a desire to protect the weak, a love of animals, a creative imagination, and a sense of humor to deal with the cruelties and unfairness that he lived with. Though he occasionally starts to slip into what his environment dictates he become, he makes the right choices in the end and stays closer to who he came into the world to be.
