Colombo: The Unsolved Murder, by Anthony Colombo, Don Capria

Anyone familiar with the history of organized crime knows the names: Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese and Colombo. There have been volumes written about that period, some accurate, some not at all. Anthony Colombo, the son of Joseph Colombo Sr., one of those reputed “crime bosses” , has written, along with filmmaker and author Don Capria, what he hopes will be the final word on that turbulent time, the role his father played and finally, the true details of his murder. In “Colombo: The Unsolved Murder”, the authors look to do more than set the record straight…
“My father, Joseph Colombo Sr., was labeled the boss of one of the most notorious crime families in New York’s history. Every news article, magazine article, and every book that references him repeats with little detail this as fact. Who my father really was, and who was truly responsible for his death has always been shrouded in mystery’’ Colombo said. “Not to me though, as I know the truth of who he was, what he meant to the Italian-American community, and who should be held accountable for his tragic demise” he continued.
On June 28th, 1971, Joseph Colombo Sr was shot and mortally wounded leading the Italian Unity Day rally in Columbus Circle. Now over 40 years later, his son and confidant tells the truth surrounding the shooting, the on-going wars with Joey Gallo and his crew, his father’s formation of the Italian-American Civil Rights League, and Colombo Sr consulting on The Godfather.

I bought this book for 2 specific reasons. 1) It was written by my cousin Anthony along with Don Capria. 2) because it tells the true story of my uncle (Joe Colombo).

There have been several books written on the subject and the media has portrayed my Uncle in certain ways that truly have been very harsh and in ways where the truth was misconstrued and lied about.

My cousin Anthony who has lived through this his entire life is the only person who can talk about what truly happened since he lived through it with his father. Not until now with this book has my Uncle's story truly been done honestly. Honestly by the man who stood by his side throughout it all - my cousin Anthony.

For many years now, people and the media have been writing about my uncle, and have displayed him in a very negative way. They have refused to acknowledge all the things that he had done in his life that have helped many people. Always helping Family and Friends and also helping strangers on the street - people that he did not even know.

In 1970, he founded The Italian American Civil Rights League. He created this League because Italian American's were not being treated fairly and receiving equal liberties in the workforce. His dedication and his hard work with the League, along with his son Anthony changed things in this country for Italian Americans.

I hope everyone who may remember my Uncle, or those who may not remember or know him personally, reads this book. If your Italian - you would truly appreciate this book. Anyone who truly understands the words "Family" , "Honor", and "Respect" and who always puts Family first above all else, would take away quite a lot from this book. You will also see that because of my Uncle and all that he did for Italian American's, he himself was a TRUE LEADER for the cause.

The most important thing to our Family and to me personally is what I was told many years ago by both my Grandmother and my Mother. I want my Uncle Joe to be remembered for these very special 5 things:
A Loving Husband, Father, Uncle, Grandfather, & Friend.

Who Was Responsible for the Murder? We'll Probably Never Know.
By Bill Emblom
Authors Don Capria and Anthony Colombo, son of the subject Joseph Colombo, have collaborated on a biography of sorts on Joseph Colombo reputed head of one of New York's five mafia families. The book highlights primarily the growing-up years of Anthony and the lessons his father, Joseph, taught him, many of them physically painful.

Author and son Anthony Colombo defends his father as one who spent his time defending civil rights of Italian individuals in the country and primarily New York City. Joseph Colombo's role in heading the Italian Civil Rights League in 1970 and 1971 at Columbus Circle was to promote the Italian Americans and debunk the stereotype of Italians being gangsters. The 1971 rally is where the assassination attempt took place on Colombo and put him in a coma for the next several years before he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The book concludes with the various scenarios as to who was behind the assassination. The lone gunman, Joey Gallo, Carlo Gambino, and the F.B.I.--C.I.A. theories are a few of the possibilities. Anthony Colombo believes it was the latter who was responsible. I liked the book but I thought it contained significant filler such as a chapter on the movie The Godfather.
