About the Author
Rafiq is writer and filmmaker Robert Sean Lewis. He wrote his first book, Gaj: The End of Religion (2004), to counter the idea of God or Allah as an individual who could take sides in the “war on terror.” His memoir Days of Shock, Days of Wonder (2016) tells the story of his confrontation with the spiritual and cognitive dissonance of the 9/11 age.
His documentaries include Be Smile: The Stories of Two Urban Inuit (2006), Khanqah: A Sufi Place (2011), and Cosmic Shift: Pilgrimage into Mayaland (2012). Be Smile screened at the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco in 2008 and at Cinema Politica in Montreal, Ottawa, and Fredericton.

No single event has had such a profoundly negative impact on our species and its place in the web of life, with the possible exception of the bombing of Hiroshima. This is not because 9/11 was an unusually large-scale act of mass murder – its 3,000 or so victims were a small fraction of the 60 million murdered by US military and CIA interventions since World War Two – but rather because of its psychological impact through media propaganda.
So how do we deal with it? Rafiq set off on a journey that integrated 9/11 truth activism into his quest for a more authentic life outside the Matrix. If Kerouac or Bukowski had shunned alcohol for cannabis, encountered Sufism, and faced 9/11 truth and its implications, the result might have looked a bit like this. "Days of Shock, Days of Wonder" is an engrossing read and an important document of our time.

I related to Rafiq’s intense dislike of abuse of power and the many forms it takes in human relations, from the macro to the micro level. I admired his courage, fortitude, and dogged determination to look for uncomfortable truths, as opposed to pretending that he was comfortable accepting what he was told by media and governments. My heart went out to him as he struggled to accommodate the sometimes highly eccentric behaviours of some of the people he encountered during his travels. And I was particularly intrigued by what he had to say about dealing with the ego and about recognizing its nature and tendencies. I know what it is like to look at the world and want to throw up my hands and say, "Forget it! It’s not going to change.” Rafiq reminds us that we can change ourselves and that how we respond to life can effect change on a larger scale. This important understanding is powerfully conveyed in this timely and life-altering memoir.

By 9/11 Cover-Up
This book was the 1st book I read after years of reading one doom and gloom book after another revolving around state and corporate crimes against the masses. I figured it was time to change pace after the author prodded me to read his work. Eventhough it was still non-fiction it was going to be an easy read about one mans journey to the unknown away from the 'comfort' of western living standards.
As he recounts his story from one place to another you feel as if you're along side him in his van seeking the help of strangers with his broken spanish from the coast of Mexico to the mystique of India and beyond.
I felt tied in my seat reading an adventure story. Wanting myself to escape from the routine and hustling of our commercial civilization. The complexity of our modern world from rent to mortgages, insurance policies, pension plans,bills were thrown-out the window. You lived day to day not knowing who you would meet,where you'd eat,park for the night,etc...He was forced to open-up to the unknown to get by. Everyday brought new challenges, adventures, new faces. I felt 'home' again. Human interactions were more natural beyond the robotic transactions of our consumeristic world.
Every page reminded me of the questions I have about where are we going as a specie.Do we know any better to compel the non-industrialized world to jump ship and follow us? Have we gone too far? Is there a middle road so that we could maintain some sort of balance so various life forms could thrive for the optimal health of all?
He brings-up his awakening about the lies of the mother of all lies---9/11. Its residual wars and interventions around the globe and how it has sped-up the insatiable appetite of the western corporate world to swallow-up the last drop of 'blood' this earth possesses to satisfy the desires of a tiny few. How much longer could the masses play along ? Will it be too late to save us from dire consequences to come?
But in the end, as I concur with the author. There is a spiritual meaning for our existence. We are here for a very short time. Maybe we are here to learn. If so, there is no time to waste. Learn, work hard,share, enjoy,cooperate,love and in the 'end' it will have served us well.

Behind the Veils

As a child of the 60ʻs, I felt like I was riding shotgun with Rafiq on his journeys of self discovery and his escapes from Babylon, in his classic VW hippie bus. In my travels of discovery, I piloted two of those iconic space ships. As an activist of today, it was so hard to put this book down, but when I finally did I felt like I had been to India with the author, to Mexico and all the other stops and beaches along the way to our greater understanding of how the world works.
This epic biographical tale of Truth-seeking redemption, resurrection and transformation came to me as no coincidence, through the still smoldering ashes of the World Trade Center, from another seeker of Truth. Before that spiritual hand off, I went to NYC just before Pope Francisʻ visit in September 2015 to find my Cousin Tommyʻs name on the bronze plaques, and to see the scene of the Great Hoax for myself. Tommy was a heroic fireman who lost his life while saving many lives that day the Twin Towers came down so efficiently.
As the murder of JFK shocked many in my generation into a different view of the great and exceptional America, the thinking youth of Rafiqʻs time have no illusions that itʻs almost all an illusion. Behind the nearly transparent veils of bloated disaster capitalism and the democracy of the 1%, the Wizards of Oz have been working overtime to change the world to a lush playground for the few, and to slave quarters for the rest of us who are still standing and able.
With that dark vision of what is transpiring in our world, as we speak, Rafiq takes us through the wormholes of his spiritual journey, to a place of profound love and respect for Mother Earth and all itʻs creatures, including the beautiful humans among us. In his quest for answers and inner peace, we become as enlightened as anyone can be from reading a book.
