Sharks pushed their way into the mass of men, and saltwater gnawed at their burns. Meanwhile, rescue craft searched for them…in the wrong place! Who would survive?
Tin Can Sailors Save the Day! tells the story of the USS Johnston through the eyes of three men who served aboard the ship: Captain Ernest Evans, Gunnery Officer Bob Hagen, and Seaman First Class Dusty Rhodes. Each man has a story of how he became a sailor and how the Johnston became his ship. Not all of them survived, but they all did their country proud.

Fast-paced, absorbing, and rewarding.

TIN CAN SAILORS SAVE THE DAY! is history as non-stop excitement. The author skillfully weaves in the backstory of the World War II battle against the Japanese off Samar (Philippines) while keeping the focus on three men (the captain, a gunnery officer, and a seaman). The bravery is incredible and so is the suffering when the men are forced into tropical waters filled with whitetip sharks. TIN CAN is a fast-paced, absorbing, and rewarding family read. It just might spark important conversations with elderly friends and family who also lived the history of World War II. Highly recommended.

Makes history fun

I purchased this book for my 11 year old nephew and he read half of it in one night! He said he particularly enjoyed the maps. Would highly recommend for any kids interested in non-fiction.
