She was raised in Fresno, California but after graduating from UC Berkeley in the revolutionary '60's, she kept on moving and never looked back. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area but often leaves to feed her travel bug. Apparently not even a near-death experience can stop her.

What an eye-opening book of travel and insurance!

Starting this book, I knew it would be hard to put down. What was supposed to be a luxury trip to the Himalayans and beyond turned into a nightmare dealing with travel insurance which was paid "in case something should happen." What did happen could not have been foreseen, but the "cruelest cut" was trying to get her primary insurance company, USAA / Travel Insured, to do anything which could have saved her weeks of neglect that surely would have killed her if not for her secondary insurance. The indifference, illogical delays, insults and ignorance of their one million evacuation/repatriation policy made USAA 's philosophy clear-- a dead body is sent home cheaper than a live one. What company made immediate decisions to pay hospital bills and arrangements to save her life? Which insurance company saw the great danger she was in and after just a few calls pushed themselves into first position? Factual, with transcripts of calls and correspondence, Paula takes you through this real life struggle that any person who travels should read. Written with humor and vivid descriptions of exotic places and cultures, plus interaction with some of the native people who helped her, make this an engaging, compelling book. Shame on you, USAA/Travel Insured.

Dreadfully ill, dreadful conditions, dreadful insurance, but too long a diatribe against a specific insurance company

The author's illnesses are indeed awful, but mostly the point is that USAA insurance, available only to those with an armed forces connection, did painfully little to help.

Misadventures....with travel insurance

As an avid traveler getting older, I often wonder whether I should purchase travel insurance. After reading Paula's account of needing emergency medical care on her trip to the Himalayas, I think the answer is "yes", but be careful WHICH company you buy the insurance from. Paula gives you good questions to ask based on her detailed experiences. Reading an account of hospital care in Llosa and Chengdu and frustrating calls with an insurance company may sound dull, but Paula's engaging wit and eye for telling cultural details make this an engaging read.
More photos would have filled in some gaps and made it a 5 star
book, but definitely a worthwhile read for anyone contemplating a trip to anywhere slightly adventurous (which are the kind of places worth visiting).
