Born in Ireland, the newly ordained Father Deevy spent seven years in Louisiana before discarding the Roman Collar to join the War on Poverty. After 9/11 Deevy became concerned about the increasing polarization of American society and returned to his homeland following President Bush's decision to invade Iraq. Born in Ireland, Dr Ed Deevy spent more than four decades in the United States. An organisational psychologist, he is the author of Creating the Resilient Organization, a popular management book published by Prentice Hall, and Surviving the Great Recession, published by The Liffey Press. He lives in Kilnamanagh in South Dublin

This wonderful memoir covers so much territory it's hard to capture it all in a short review but it sure would make a great movie. (Hollywood take notice!) It moves from what family life was like in a rural and patriarchal Ireland, to transitioning to life in the sweltering (and segregated) American south, to facing challenges of faith and purpose inside the Catholic clergy, to being in the middle of the '60's maelstrom of civil rights, on the front lines of the war on poverty and Nixon's war on the war on poverty, to an insider’s look at the mental health field, and tales of senior level corporate consulting. This book takes you from a farm family gathered around the shortwave radio for limited news of the outside world to the communications and travel taken for granted in the 21st Century.
But the real crux of this story is the author’s search for meaning at each stage of his career and life. As his understanding of a rapidly changing world (and his understanding of himself) grows so does his capacity to come to terms with complex family dynamics, tragedies of loss and love - all with that unique Irish mix of humor and poignancy as he insightfully observes the fun and losses of this bumpy road we call life. Searching for the Promised Land. An Irishman’s American Odyssey is not just a great story; it is a most instructive traveler’s guide if you’re thinking of taking a clear, unvarnished look at your own life (or even writing an engaging memoir about it).

I love this book. Frankly, I didn't expect to. As an American of Irish descent, I was not looking forward to another sentimental recounting of one man's journey from the "Old Sod." I needn't have worried. I was hooked at the outset. Mr. Deevy's description of his path from a small Irish village, to the seminary, to a rural parish in Louisiana at the start of the civil rights movement and beyond opens a fascinating window into not only one man's path to spiritual and moral growth, but the dynamics of a rapidly changing American narrative. Remarkably candid, with anecdotes eliciting laughter, outrage, joy, and sorrow, I finished this book feeling that I learned as much about myself as I did Mr, Deevy. Truly outstanding.
