Epic True Romance, from Siberia to Florida

Lovers of Romance, the United States, Cold War history, or Russian Literature will all cherish this memoir, written like the best epic romance novel. Romanov weaves a story that begins with a precocious love child (Svetlana) in a cold apartment, and a Christian family’s exile to Siberia, where another love child (Nick) develops integrity even while living among thugs and thieves. Twists, fate, and a mutual love of Science eventually brings them together in Cheboksary. They each excel in their fields, against the odds. They learn family loyalty from watching the movie "The Godfather." That loyalty is tested when one of their daughters marries an American. The Romanov family, planning a short visit just for the wedding, abandons their careers, prestige, and beloved books to keep everyone together. In yet another twist, an American Intelligence officer in the Reserves, Cyle, locates Nick in Florida, where the former national Russian coach and doctor struggles to make ends meet as a laborer and personal trainer. Cyle asks Nick to train the first group of olympic certified triathlon coaches.
Devoid of self-pity, Romanov subtly makes the reader appreciate the wonders of the United States, from disposable diapers to the chance to read The Bible or study Broadcast Journalism. Her writing, as she herself points out, matured with the story, which is worth sticking with despite some confused pronouns and phrasing in the first few chapters. Listen to her Russian accent as you read how this amazing couple let love pull themselves up from the bottom, first in one country, then again in this one. Great family of writers

I have known this couple for more than 20 years. They are good people, both former University professors. Nicholas is a great sport scientist. But I never knew that Svetlana is also a great writer. This is a must read which you will not be able to put down.
