Reverend Gage Hotaling was a young minister in his first church when Pearl Harbor was bombed and America was drawn into World War II. As the war dragged on, he felt the need to enlist, so he could successfully preach to this generation. He joined the Navy in 1944, only to end up assigned to the Marines. His first action was on Iwo Jima, the bloodiest battle for the Marine Corps during the war. This book tells of his experiences on that island along with his formative years in seminary and his early ministry. He was a selfless man who spent his life serving God, never seeking fame or recognition. Fifty-five years after the battle, he was bestowed with a most fitting tribute.

A compelling story of courage as young father and Naval Chaplain Lieutenant E Gage Hotaling, assigned to the Marines, crosses the Pacific and serves during the battle for Iwo Jima. The author, son Kerry Hotaling, includes excerpts from personal papers providing insight how this young Chaplain faced death with faith and hope and offers a glimpse into the depth of his love for his family as well. This is a great book giving us background on a much-respected man. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommend.

What does a great military campaign look like from the point of view of a chaplain? “Go Forward into the Storm, an Iwo Jima Journal,” tells us. A compilation of journal entries and letters connected by narrative, this book conveys the experience of one Protestant chaplain, Rev. E. Gage Hotaling, who was placed by fate with the U. S. Marines at the front lines of the month-long battle over a desolate volcanic island in the Pacific.
There are hundreds of World War II books that give detailed accounts of the strategies of generals and the heroism of soldiers, but practically none that tell what life is like for combatants most of the time. Around brief periods of intense violence, soldiers, marines and sailors spend most of their time waiting for something to happen and then cleaning up afterwards. Chaplains are intensely involved with both these aspects of war.
On the way to battle, combatants often seek to be closer to God, and chaplains are there to assist. Chaplains also help to care for the wounded and bury the dead. Then they write letters to relatives and receive them back. It is these essential tasks that are chronicled in this book written by the chaplain’s son, Kerry Hotaling.
Rev. Hotaling emerges from these pages as a sensitive, committed, and highly self-aware person. He enlisted in the Navy because he knew he would be preaching to a generation of parishioners who knew war, and he felt he would also have to know war in order to reach them. He was a non-smoker who took up smoking to cover the stench of death in preparing bodies for burial. He officiated over the interment ceremonies of a significant portion of the 5,931 Marines who were killed in the battle. One journal entry: March 2, 1945, 247 men buried.
The book contains letters written by Rev. Hotaling to parents of Marines, as well as the letters sent to Rev. Hotaling in return. Also included are letters between Rev. Hotaling and his wife, Adell.
This book has extra meaning for me, as Rev. Hotaling was the pastor of the church in which I grew up. He baptized me and I listened to many of his sermons. I knew him as a genial person who could reach out to anyone – and a gifted interpreter of the Bible. This book brings Rev. Hotaling to life, but it also is a tribute to all the chaplains who have ever served. Their worth is known to the fighting men and to their families, but is too often unsung. This book helps to change that.

Great Read

In this book Kerry Hotaling honors his father and all those that fought on the Island of Iwo Jima. Kerry Hotaling tells the story of his father Gage and the other men that served with him in the Chaplin and burial detail on the island, by using a journal his father kept at the time. This book tells a story not normally told on a battle field, those that have to deal with the carnage the front lines leave in their wake. This book is great for anyone looking for a first hand account of Iwo Jima and to seethe steps that lead a man to join up and serve his country. As with other books written by Kerry Hotaling it pulls you in and does not let go until there is no more left to read.
