Both a memoir and a self-help book, High Tides: Wading Through Depression—Every Day chronicles the difficulties of living with bipolar depression as well as the strategies this author uses to help cope with this sometimes debilitating disease. In order to prevent her biplolar illness—and especially her depression—from ruling her life, Andrews draws upon such things as exercise, writing, therapy, medication, and prayer to help wade through the treacherous waters of this disorder, which claims over 41,000 American lives each year.
Managing and battling depression, a formidable adversary, is the focus of this book. For anyone who wants to understand depression more—but most of all for those who find themselves in the middle of a depressive episode—High Tides affirms that you are not alone in your suffering. In particular, this book examines how to enjoy a more balanced and fulfilling life even if you live with depression—every day.

Powerful, Sensitive, Honest, and Beautifully Written
By Richard Rios
A beautifully written personal, a candid, and unflinching analysis of the terrors and “gifts” of living with mental illness and depression. Part memoir and part handbook, the author, a retired English teacher, discusses how depression, and the inability to even talk about it, has haunted her and her family for as long as she can remember, and how she has learned to cope by using a host of strategies, including therapy, reading, writing, walking, hiking, faith and prayer. By using a water metaphor, much like a pain scale of 1-10, she is able to assess the daily level of her depression, and sometimes manage it: numbers 1-4, describe water to her ankles, where managing simple tasks become a burden, Level 5, assesses water up to her waist and rising, and the dreaded level 10 - with the water over her head - completely drowns and debilitates her. It is both a story of suffering and triumph, but one ending with hope for the many who “must carry their cross”, with this relentless illness.

High Tides, A Moving Experience
By Shirley A Jones
"If you can't fly, then run; if you can't run, walk; if you can't walk, crawl; but by all means keep moving." Candace Andrews has these words of Martin Luther King prefacing Chapter 2 in her new release, HIGH TIDES. After reading through the pages, my recommendation is to move, as fast as you can, to purchase a copy of her wonderfully insightful--and moving--book. It is, all in one, a touching story, a sound research source, a useful guide, and a tribute and encouragement to those hundreds of thousands living daily with Bipolar waves, predictably forceful and turbulent. I commend Candace for her courage to take on a topic--often cloaked with stifling misconceptions and shame--and shine a light of awareness and understanding upon this very real medical condition. Thank you, Candace.

Insight into the author's depression
By T. Murrell
Candace has suffered from depression for many years. She wrote this book as a chronicle of her journey through the waters of depression in hopes that some of her struggles and the things that help her with resonate with others. Everyone suffers from depression differently. Different things trigger or help, no one person is exactly the same. But by sharing her battle with this disease, the author hopes to help the reader realize that they are not alone. She also hopes that by opening discussing what does and does not work for her will help someone else find the things that help them. She uses the analogy of tide water to describe her depression and how it affects her.
The book was interesting from a purely story stand point. But I also gleaned some helpful insights into how to not only deal with depression, but also how to deal with the emotions that often overwhelm the person. The book is small, but it's a book that is packed with comfort and hope for someone suffering from the disease. I would recommend this to anyone who has been touched by depression, either themselves or someone around them.
I received this book free of charge from Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.
