In honor of a "forever friend"
Artist Rosemary Brofos has created a tribute to her lifetime best friend Helen whom she met in grade school in Kissimmee, Florida during World War II.
Still grieving for her 6-year old sister who died from diptheria, Rosemary and her mother move from Illinois to the cow country of central Florida to live with grandparents while her father serves in the US Navy in the Pacific.
Helen, the daughter of a genuine Florida cowboy, soon teaches Rosemary how to love and live on despite tragedy. The two share adventures in Kissimmee before Disney World and Universal Studios exist, times that were simpler without Internet, cell phones and video games.
While the war raged on two fronts, the Atlantic and Pacific, Rosemary and Helen are impacted in little ways--wearing outgrown clothes, giving handmade gifts on birthdays or Christmas, growing a Victory Garden and watching news clips of the war at the movies. With the war always in the back of their minds, these two grade school girls are nonetheless rich with love from parents, grandparents and friends.
This book is intended for children and parents/grandparents to read together, with grandparents reminiscing and kids learning about a unique time in our country's history.
Illustrated in color by Rosemary herself, she writes about places and people who lived in Kissimmee during the 1940s. She also includes photos of the two little girls as they grow up, marry and have children of their own, all the while staying in contact with one another.
This memoir is a work of love and testimony to the value of enduring friendships.

Review
"What an absolute treat!! I love, love, love everything about your book...the story, the history, the photos, and of course your illustrations! Your narrative really creates a picture of time and place, and a context for you and your best friend's young lives" Cindy
Rosemary Brofos' lyrical book captures the character of central Florida in the 1940s when ranching rather than tourism held sway and wonderfully colorful characters were found, not in expensive theme parks but right on Main Street. She captures the nature of childhood, from its delight in simple things to its endless capacity for wonder. With charming full-color images, including period photographs as well as watercolors, Brofos' book is a gentle testament to the charm of the past, the power of the imagination, and the ability of friendship to last a lifetime." Suzanne Fox, Book Strategy
From the Author
I wrote this book in memory of Helen Bass Rogers, my "forever" friend. Helen taught me to love again after I lost my older sister, Ramona, age 6, to diphtheria. Our childhood memories transcended later separations, and Helen will always dwell in my heart. I dedicated his book to all our children and grandchildren.
"My writing, my art, my grandchild, the chance to travel, the wonders of nature, all let me enter the world of childhood make-believe, where every day is a new adventure and learning is never-ending."
From the Inside Flap
Rosemary invites you to sit down with a cup of tea and enjoy her stories of a time when life in Kissimmee, Florida, chugged along at a slower pace. No cell phones, no Internet, limited television, no Disney World or Universal theme parks. CDs had not been invented yet, so music was heard on the radio or played on vinyl records. Yet, it was a magical time and place even as a war raged on two fronts across the seas.

A lovely story of friendship enhanced by beautiful drawings
By Miranda
Two Little Girls from Kissimmee is a gem of a history book and a testament to abiding friendship. Every drawing by Rosemary Brofos is etched with love for her best friend who recently passed away. I think this book should be read by parents and grandparents to the children in their family. It highlights a simpler time despite lives complicated by a world war and the tragedy of losing a sibling to a deadly illness. Experience how little Rosemary travels to Florida from Illinois where her bruised heart is mended amid the security of a small cattle community. As I studied the pictures and text, I found myself mourning not only for Rosemary’s little sister, but for the quaint little cow town of Kissimmee which has been gobbled up by hotels and stores selling souvenirs to tourists intent on experiencing the fantasies of Disney and Universal Studios. If you want a real souvenir of Kissimmee, this book is it!

A Precious and Well-Told Tale of Memories ... What a Blessing This Book Will be to all the Heirs of both "Little Girls"
By DreamWeb
This is a delightful little story following two little girls growing up in Kissimmee (kiss-a-me ...ha ha) Florida. Not only is the tale well told, but the photographs that accompany it are just amazing. It lends so much more to the story when you can put actual faces to the characters.
There is nothing on earth like a childhood friendship that stands the test of time. I am fortunate enough to have my very best friend, Gail (friends since we were six years old) still living. Rosemary's childhood friend has passed on but Rosemary has carved out a legacy for Helen's remaining family and friends. I am sure both sets of grandchildren and nieces will enjoy these stories.
