Darkness Follows Light is a love story, the story of Pattie and Earle: their courtship, romance, and extraordinary love. They married on a Teton mountain summit and honeymooned in romantic French Polynesia. Their shared passion for conservation and wilderness led them to remote corners of the globe tracking endangered species in Alaska, Ecuador, Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Yellowstone backcountry. Pattie and Earle shared everything, even ill-fated illness. Both were afflicted. Their once enviable lifestyle disintegrated into the oppressive world of life-threatening cancer. After Pattie's courageous struggle and untimely death, Earle's life collapsed into dark despair. This memoir does not end with Pattie's tragic passing; rather, it goes on to trace Earle's personal journey into the darkest depths of grief to shine a light on bereavement and the miracle of love.

Experiences in the Dual Nature of Life
By Anne G. Sherrod
There aren’t many books like this one, that take the reader through the destined meeting, the years of prized experiences, the shock of a death diagnosis, and the death-bed agonies of a true love story, in intricate detail. In this remembrance of his beloved wife, Pattie, author Earle Layser communicates it all in glowing and sometimes poetic reminiscences, and in cries of grief.
Not surprisingly, such a story requires two people who are meant for each other. While few of us will ever have that fulfillment, it is beautiful when it happens; and it is crucial that we all learn as much as we can about the affirmative potentia of relationships and life. In today’s world, this book provides desperately needed inspiration that intimate relationship can be much more than the creeping routine, the mediocrity, the taking of each other for granted, that stalks so many couples after the honeymoon is over.
But the book is also a journey into the particular grief experienced by those who are very deeply bonded to a person who has passed on. It leaves the survivor with a vast empty hole in his or her external life that can only be filled by an inpouring from the inner world of the unseen. Until then, Life seems unfairly to make a soul-searing demand that the survivor learn to enjoy life as a single person again, which is like being asked to walk with only one leg and no possible prosthetic.
Layser shares many authentic, intimate moments between two people whose ardent, sometimes poetic romancing through love letters, Valentine cards, gifts, celebrations and travel kept the spark of their relationship alive. They had a special talent for cultivating the kind of life they wanted to live. That meant hiking, wildlife watching, skiing and canoeing in the Grand Teton Mountains of Wyoming, as well as traveling and writing about many of the great wild places of the Earth. So this book will be best understood and liked by people who are drawn to nature.
But ultimately the relationship hits a sheer rock wall that must be climbed: the fact that those who are more vulnerable to love also suffer more pain. Life thrusts this reality upon each of us and, whether we know it or not, we answer its demands in how we live our lives. It’s a question so huge we are rarely aware that it is hovering above us, following us wherever we go: whether to protect ourselves emotionally by closing down, risking little and living very little in any depth; or to throw ourselves wide open to love and suffer the consequences when it is taken away.
A single passage from Kahlil Gibran with which the author opens one his last chapters, in which his wife lies dying, expresses the core of meaning in this book: namely, that life is an experience in which light is somehow joined to darkness, and joy somehow brings pain, as pain also prepares one for deepened joy. And isn't that what Nature teaches, for the cover on the book could just as easily be the dawn, as final light on the peaks before the descent of darkness.
This raises questions about the architecture of different people’s lives: why do some people have double or triple the joy — or double or triple the tragedy — that others have? Why do some people experience part, while others experience both sides of Life? And what does it mean, or does it wait for the liver to give it meaning? I believe author Earle Layser is well on his way to finding some meanings, for he has turned his experience into a book that certainly provided this reader with an electrifying jolt about the need to deeply appreciate what one cherishes while one still has it. His book, written in an effort to endure the pain flowing through his veins, is a bold act in climbing the wall suddenly thrusting up in front of him.

By Vera Blinn Reber
Earle Layser's memoir of his life with Pattie is deeply personal and emotionally honest. It is a moving decades-long storybook account of their developing love and emerging engagement with nature and environmental causes. The center of their natural world and journalistic publications is the Jackson Hole-Yellowstone region with a backdrop of the Grand Teton. They soon enlarged their environmental journalism to report on many exotic, threatened, and endangered species and environments, such as Alaskan caribou and brown bear, African rhinos and gorillas, Madagascar lemurs and many other animals and places. Their remarkable life's journey came to an abrupt end when both developed life-threatening cancer. Earle describes the rapid descent of their lives into the hell of potential cancer cures and possible remissions. Pattie exhausted multiple medical interventions and procedures before dying. Earle remained to write this compelling tribute to Pattie and their life of passion and adventure. John Offner

A true story of old fashioned love and the sadness of loss
By Zane Forester
Memoirs of this genre tend to be about celebrities, written and edited by teams, published by major publishing houses, and promoted by New York critics. Refreshingly, Darkness Follows Light is a courageous, well-written, and moving memoir about ordinary people who shared an uncommon courtship and love; lived an enviable active outdoor life in one of the most exceptional settings of the country—the Yellowstone-Teton region; traveled the world to write about endangered species; and suffered incomprehensible grief and pain when cancer struck them both. The story illuminates the difficulties and dark pathway down which bereavement can lead. This an uplifting memoir of old-fashioned love and relationships, and a candid look at the difficulties the survivor can face when a deep relationship is ripped apart.
