A book of courage and resolve about a woman who only saw one race ~ The Human Race

Robert Kent reveals through the life of Josephine Cogdell Schuyler a part of American history rarely seen or understood. Racial tensions between Blacks and Whites have often been discussed, but the obstacles faced by interracial marriage between the two groups prior to 1967 are often overlooked. Frowned upon and discouraged, few couples challenged social norms and expectations.
When Josephine Cogdell, a young white privileged girl strolled into Harlem’s Savoy club, she fell instantly in love with George Schuyler, a conservative black journalist. Robert Kent explores Josephine’s early life from Granbury, Texas to San Francisco, California in order to discover clues as to what led Josephine to choose to live in a forbidden interracial marriage with George Schuyler.
George and Josephine raised their only daughter, Philippa, with the knowledge that there was only one race, the human race. Philippa, being of mixed heritage, dazzled the world from an early age as a child prodigy. She played the piano in concert halls all over the globe, but still faced hardships being accepted in American society.
From out of the Harlem Renaissance, the Schuyler family persevered whether their marriage and family was accepted or rejected. Robert Kent presents a kaleidoscope of people and their perspectives on race and societal trends throughout Josephine’s life. His work awakens a new understanding of the American tapestry, and the people who pushed the boundaries for a more inclusive society enjoyed by many in modern times.

Josephine Schuyler as rebel and forerunner of social change

Bob Kent's comprehensive true story about the "rebel lady" tells the story of America's evolution of thought from racial prejudice and segregation in the South to integration, intermarriage and cultural exchange between blacks and whites in the American experience today. In Kent's analysis of Josephine Cogdell Schuyler's life (1898 - 1969) he shows how she questioned social barriers and how the American culture would eventually be positively effected by open exchange. There is discomfort in reading about the extreme prejudices exhibited by Schuyler's family in Texas, of her early rebellion and radical behavior and in her techniques in raising her only child Philippa, a mixed race child who was a genius and a musical child prodigy. In putting together the story of Schuyler's life, Kent drew conclusions from his personal research and also included some of Schuyler's own words in rhymic, resounding poetry. It is an enlightening read.

Very interesting bit of history about a free spirited, small town Texas girl who, in the first quarter of the 20th century, migrated into the multi racial, multi cultural society of Harlem. Another example of the fact that some of the most interesting people in history come from the least expected upbringings. Very interesting evening's read.
